How Did The Scarlett Change

Women in the Confederacy had a great impact on the Civil War. They were thrown into totally different lifestyles--ones that did not include men taking care of the land and other businesses. Women had more control of their lives than ever before. Some took it upon themselves to get involved directly with the war while others just kept the home fires burning. Whatever roles they played, women contributed a multitude of skills to the Civil War effort.

It was a beautiful day on the reservation, the sun was beaming down onto the earth. It had been extremely hot the past couple weeks in Alabama. Peyton Farquhar and his wife were sitting outside on the sun porch. They were enjoying the scenery all around the grounds. He and his wife watched his slaves work out in the fields and their children that were sitting on a weathered bench near the front of his land. His children were being entertained by a butterfly that was dancing in the wind. He remembers him doing the same as a young child and his father, who was very well respected around the area, used to yell at him, “Come on in boy, it’s time for supper.” His father had passed away, leaving him the plantation and all of the slaves. He met his wife, Margaret Farquhar, right before he had passed. She is the daughter of William Turner, another well respected, deceased slave owner. They were joined together in holy matrimony and later had two children, a son, James, and a daughter, Elizabeth.

When several Southern states broke off from the United States after President Abraham Lincoln’s election, the support for forming a new nation in the South was far from uniform. In Alabama, Winston County threatened to secede from the state if she decided to secede from the Union. The residents of Winston County did not believe that seceding was in the best interest of the Democratic Party, or the country as a whole. Although the county pulled back from the bold step of secession and hoped to remain neutral in the conflict, it remained under state control and was the scene of violent acts of retribution during the war.

The cannonade of the century began as Aunt Pittypat abandoned Scarlett and a very pregnant Melanie to flee to Macon. As Sherman got closer, Melanie got worse, Scarlett stayed with her out of her love for Ashley. Rhett challenged her love for Ashley and eventually asked Scarlett to be his mistress which she outright refused as he was amused by her. This is the first time where Scarlett thinks about loving him and he is only affirmed in his love for her because he knew she would refuse. Weeks passed and Atlanta was deserted all but Scarlett, Melanie, and hundreds of wounded soldiers and refugees. And of course, the day that Sherman decided to press forward would be the day that Melanie went into labor. Scarlett and Prissy delivered the baby as the last of the army retreated from the city. Scarlett had Prissy get Rhett and his horse and carriage. When he did, he asked Scarlett where she wanted to go and she said Tara. Regardless of logic or fear she wanted to go home, like a child wanting their mother. Scarlett is a selfish person never lifting a finger to help anyone unless it’s in her own interests. But she loves Tara selflessly because Tara will always be home. I love and relate to this part so much, because for Southerners home is more than where you live, it is your identity. And the importance of Tara to Scarlett continues on into the book because Tara is where Scarlett’s heart

The Civil War is one of America’s most despondent times in our history. This war represents a time in history, when the foundation of America’s was being threatened with extinction. A great deal has been written about this War Between the States, most notably its leaders, but there are other important factors and people that are often being overlooked by historians. One such person is the first lady of the Confederacy, Varina Howell Davis. Varina was a quick tempered, intelligent, opinionated woman who believed in equal rights of marriage and of women. However her husband, the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis did not. He often scrutinized his wife for both her political and social believes. They had a very turbulent relationship,

The American Civil War was fought from 1860 to 1865 between the Union and the Confederates. Many battles were fought during this time period, and all of them were extremely gory. Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Bull Run were important battles for both sides fighting in the Civil War.

In April 1861, the United States of America went to war. They did not go to war with a foreign power, because of a border dispute, and they did not go to war with the native people because of their hunger for more land. No, this would be a war among themselves, north against south, brother against brother, and in some instances even father against son. In the four long and bloody years that this war lasted more than 600,000 of these brothers, fathers, and sons would die in the many battles. Many people point to slavery as the reason the civil war was fought. Although slavery was one of the key issues, the causes for the war run much deeper. Besides slavery, other issues that were causes of the civil war included the differences in moral value, and the different ways the politicians interpret the constitution. First of all, the most obvious cause of the war was slavery. According to the map in document “An” all slaves and cotton were in the southern states. Slavery had already been abolished in the north years before, and every time a territory was to become a state there was a huge struggle between the pro-slavery south and the northern abolitionist. Each time peace was maintained by way of compromise. In his speech in 1858 Abraham Lincoln foretells the upcoming war by s0aying, “In my opinion, it will not end until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. A house divided against itself cannot stand” (Doc M). So, clearly this difference in

The rights and freedoms of Aboriginals have improved drastically since 1945 with many changes to government policy, cultural views and legal rules to bring about a change from oppression to equality. Unfortunately on the other hand, some rights and freedoms have not improved at all or have even worsened.

There were many famous names from the Civil War, some of the more notable names were: Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and George Custer. These names are synonymous with great generals who fought great battles during the war, but what about Sarah Emma Edmonds, Clara Burton, Dorthea Dix, Rose O’Neal Greenhow, and Loreta Janeta Velazquez? These names are not as known as their male counterparts, but these ladies of the Civil War Era did their part to aide their respective sides in the war. What these and other women did during the civil war may not seem as important, but without their skills, knowledge, and actions some of the great battles might have gone the other way.

The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties, including about 620,000 soldier deaths—two-thirds by disease, and 50,000 civilians. The war accounted for roughly as many American deaths as all American deaths in other U.S. wars combined.

During the 1860s there were many issues and that the Southern and Northern states needed to work on. In 1861 hundreds of thousands of Americans volunteered to fight in the Civil War, also known as the First Modern War. The main causes of this war were the economic and social differences between the North and the South. These differences led to other fundamental issues such as slavery and its abolition. In addition to that as the war was coming to its end, federal authorities found themselves presiding over the transition from slavery to freedom.After the war, there was a 12-year period best known as the Reconstruction and the main goals that it had were to get the Confederate States back into the Union, to rebuilt the Southern economy

In the 1800s the Civil War, a war between the northern and southern states, erupted into a massive conflict after President Lincoln was elected and after eleven states seceded from the Union. Following the secession from the Union, The Ft. Sumer conflict erupted, and this four-year tragedy between the northern and southern United States began causing an innumerable amount of casualties. This immense number of casualties, reaching approximately 600,000, resulted from economic and social differences of the North and South, the Dred Scott Case, and the election of President Abraham Lincoln. These causes of the Civil War were all created on conflict rather than intervention. They led to the creation of the Confederacy, a league of confederate states that embodied various disadvantages: the creation of weapons manually, the lack of railroads, the small population, as well as various advantages: tough fighting, devastating the Union 's army and unity that brought people of the Southern states together. Alongside these advantages came devastation, when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves, and led to the Confederacy 's defeat in 1865.

The civil war is by far the bloodiest war in American history. In the four deadly years of war, over six-hundred thousand Americans were killed. Many disputes that led to the civil war. These conflicts started under President James Buchanan who was a Democrat elected in the election of 1856. The issue of slavery, states’ rights, the abolitionist movement, the Southern secession, the raid on Harper’s Ferry, the election of Abraham Lincoln all contributed to the start of the civil war. The civil war and its aftermath transformed the entire nation by unifying the United States, abolishing slavery, and led to the American Industrial Revolution.

Modern historians still argue upon the causes of the English revolution. (The English Civil War). The people, in 1642, did not expect this event so soon. However, if we look down and combine all the facts and the evidence, the reasons will be exposed.

Each of the women face hardships with family, life in general, and men. Antonia a young, Bohemian girl is faced with many challenges and hardships throughout her life. After the death of her father, Antonia is obliged to start living by working in the fields alongside the men. Every member in her family depends on her both physically and emotionally. “With the death of her father, Antonia is forced to work on the family farm for her family to survive, and this shift in her role sparks a change in her identity. Antonia now wears some of her father’s belongings to suggest that she has indeed moved into a role that her father was supposed to play” (Everton). Antonia’s brother, Ambroch, makes use of her abilities as much as he can. When she works out on the fields he profits from the cash that she earns because he is the man of the household. “Antonia worked as a hired girl at the Cutters, and she was worried about Cutter’s intentions towards her. The moneylender, Wick Cuter, was known in Black Hawk as stingy towards his customers and over friendly to young girls . . . . Wick’s wife needed to go to Omaha for the weekend, and as a result of Wick’s infidelity she forced him to go with her. Although it seemed that Wick had left with his wife, Antonia still feared his intentions and pleaded with Jim to stay the night at the Cutters in her place . . . during the
