The 1980s where a time of great social and political change in the United States of America. These changes go hand in hand because the political change in the United States, as well as the rest of the world, shaped how society changed. When it comes to films, during this decade, the political change in the county that came with Ronald Reagan, film success of the 70s, and developing technology heavy influenced the movie industry. The movie industry began the practice of trying to make a movie that would become a huge blockbuster, created more unique story’s, and the practice of creating a movie franchise became popular. Studios wanted to make movies that people would want to watch multiple times so they made creative movies that were unlike anything before. The pursuit to create something that no one has done before was done by using new computer technologies to create computer generated images to put in the movie. Using the computer technologies, they could create sets and characters that couldn’t be done any other way. These factors led to the popularization of the science fiction film. Science fiction was the most bankable genre in the 80s. An example of a movie that thrived to do its computer generated special effects was the 1982 movie Tron. This movie wouldn’t be possible without using a computer and one of its big draw was the visuals like the light cycle scenes.
