In the book “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist, Sanger Rainsford Is on a yacht, to Rio when he fell overboard. He swam until he finally reached a island, where he later met a man known as General Zaroff. Rainsford got involved with General Zaroff’s Manhunt. Rainsford had to have skills if he wanted to survive the manhunt. The three skills he had were, how to make a Malay Mancatcher, his hunting skills and a trick he learned when he was in Uganda. At the beginning, Whitney said “You’ve good eyes”, while on the way to Rio, to hunt Jaguars. Rainsford has hunting skills because, Whitney told Rainsford, “and I’ve seen you pick off a moose.” Rainsford has good strength and is fit because, he swam from where he went overboard
Rainsford had to overcome and test his inner weakness, but he also had to overcome his outer weakness as well. Rainsford's mental strength has to be high for him to swim miles back to the shore, although his energy is drained. Rainsford also has to have the

Sanger Rainsford manages to beat General Zaroff at his own twisted game. It seems like all hope is lost, but not for Rainsford. He proves he can do whatever it takes to survive against all odds and he can push through even the toughest of situations. The key to Rainsford’s survival comes from his many survival skills; his true bravery shines through as General Zaroff comes closer to killing him, he is extremely clever; he can act fast when needed and he remains level headed through it all.
Not many men know how to make a Malay Man catcher. Luckily for me, too have hunted in Malacca. You are proving interesting, Mr Rainsford, I am going now to have my wond taken care of. It’s only a slight one. But I shall be back. I shall be back!” (Connell pg 17) Zaroff said with frustration. Rainsford thought to himself “I will not lose my nerve.” ( Connell pg 17) Rainsford was trying to get off the island because Zaroff was trying to kill him, but Zaroff made him hunt with him and Rainsford eventually realized that he was the game, so he had to fight back. Fight against Zaroff and fight along with nature not against.
For example, he is shown to be intelligent and experienced when he says, “"I have played the fox, now I must play the cat of the fable"” (pg18). Rainsford used deception skills by zig-zagging back and forth and creating multiple tracks that confused Zaroff’s dogs. He used his experiences from previous fox hunts to achieve his goal of outsmarting General Zaroff. An illustration, of his resourcefulness and skill is shown when “...the dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell; but for his alertness, he must have been smashed beneath it” (pg19). Rainsford was quick to spot the dead branch and was resourceful to use it as a trap to slow down and try to stop Zaroff.
Rainsford is an intelligent man. Early in the story, “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and he doggedly swam in that direction” (34). Rainsford had just fallen in the water,
First, rainsford is adventurous man because when he was in the forest getting chased by zaroff. “Whenever rainsford gets to go own a hunting trip he goes to some other place to hunt and that is why he is adventurous( page 1,2).” Rainsford was adventurous because of all of the things he was able to do and survive. Rainsford is Adventurous because he is able to survive and stay away from zaroff. Whenever rainsford was begins chased by zaroff rainsford was climbing a tree to sleep but when he got to the top he saw that zaroff was right under the
The last trait I find that is important is Rainsford’s athleticism. I believe this is an excellent trait because even though General Zaroff trains the men before he sets them free it shows that Rainsford does not need the training to fight Zaroff. The texts show, “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength. For a seemingly endless time, he fought the sea. He began to count his strokes; he could do possibly a hundred more than…” (3) This is a good piece of evidence because it shows that not only is Rainsford a quick think but he is also athletic because if he was not then he would not be able to make it from where the yacht was to the island. When he runs through the jungle trying to get away from General Zaroff he has to be athletic otherwise he would
Beyond his reactive and resourceful ways of thinking, Rainsford is visibly aggressive and energetic when he has to fight instead of fleeing. He refuses to allow himself to give up and be killed by Zaroff and decides to keep on running forward. As the hunter is escaping, he says, “Nerve, nerve, nerve!” and then “forced himself on toward that gap”, where he “leaped far out into the sea.” (14). Rainsford believed that he still had enough energy left to swim in the harsh waters. As a result, he experienced a rush of adrenaline due to how
Throughout the story there are instances where Rainsford shows that he is knowledgeable. While General Zaroff was introducing himself to Rainsford, Zaroff states that he read Rainsford’s book about hunting. Zaroff states “I've read your book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet, you see," (6). To write a book you need to be knowledgeable on the topic that you are writing a book about. Rainsford having written a book shows that he is knowledgeable in the field of hunting. Also when being hunted by Zaroff and a pack of dogs Rainsford uses a trick he learned in Uganda to kill or
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Connell, Richard, Sanger Rainsford outsmarts General Zaroff in many ways. Here are three ways he outsmarted General Zaroff. Sanger Rainsford makes traps that surprises General Zaroff. He climbed a tree to hide from Zaroff. Rainsford ended up defeating Zaroff. Here are the ways he did.
The story takes place on an island. The island is called "Shipwreck island" because it is in an area that is very treacherous for ships and is home to a lunatic (Connell 25). The lunatic's name is Gen- eral Zaroff, and he is a big game hunter. In fact he hunts the "the most dangerous game" which are humans (Connell 32). Rainsford is made the object of Zaroff's hunt which forces him to try and escape or die. Rainsford responds to his restricted environ- ment on the island by using his smarts to avoid his pursuers and to lay traps for the general. Rainsford's response respresents a different personality than Harrison. One example of Rainsford using his wit to outsmart the general is when he is just about to be captured and builds a "Malay Mancatcher" to try and catch the general (Connell 42). This example clearly shows how knowledgeable and prepared Rainsford is even is the toughest environment. In addition, before he is thrown out into the wilderness on the jungle and discovers the true nature if his fate he asks lots of questions including, "What do you mean...?", and, "And if they win...?", so that he can figure out the situation and maybe possible find a way to win the game (Connell 36). Rainsford responds
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell a man named Rainsford fell off of a ship and had to swim to an island nearby. When he arrived on the island a man named general Zaroff was there to meet him. Zaroff soon reveals the fact that he hunts humans on his island to Rainsford. The only way for Rainsford to escape the is to survive three days of being hunted by Zaroff. In the end of the book Rainsford outwits Zaroff and beats Zaroff.
