When on the topic environmental conservation, it’s very important that we credit those who have devoted their lives to doing so. Rachel Carson is one of those honorable individuals who have done the impossible. She gave the public a conscience of what they were doing to the environment. She had an author’s voice, and she used that with her esteemed knowledge of the environment to write books that instilled curiosity and appreciation of nature in the people. Ultimately, Rachel Carson was the origin of the EPA, had a great education, and was thoroughly commended for her work. Firstly, Rachel Carson was a historical ecological figure whose actions of protecting the environment changed the world. Specifically, her involvement included battling the chemical companies and antagonists for her credibility. She was challenged and battered at because she was a woman, and was trying to get involved in a major company, so they were confident in the fact that they could discredit her. However, her book, silent spring was a powerful work of art that got the public concerned and passionate about the environment and the damage chemical items were causing. This eventually led to the ban of the chemical DDT, which was supposed to “kill insects”. Because it was colorless and tasteless, many animals and plants ingested this …show more content…
She attended multiple colleges and majored in marine biology as well as She graduated from the Pennsylvania college for women (now Chatham U.) in 1929 at the age of 25. She attended afterwards at John Hopkins then at John Hopkins, with a major in zoology. She graduated here at the age of 28. With these degrees and earned knowledge, Carson wrote over five books, and influenced an environmental conscience for the people of the United states. Overall Rachel Carson is perhaps the most environmentally significant figure in the united
Albert Einstein once said, "Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty." Similar to Einstein, the author Rachel Carson believed that human kind should embrace nature's and help preserve its beauty and life . In the passage from the book Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, the author informs and persuades her audience against the dangers and misuse of pesticides. Rachel Carson is a renowned writer, ecologist, and scientist who dedicated her life to the conservation of the environment. Throughout her career as an editor in chief, marine biologist, and environmental activist, Carson continued to educate the public about the
Rachel Carson is considered one of America's finest science and nature writers. She is best known for her 1962 book, Silent Spring, which is often credited with beginning the environmental movement in the United States. The book focussed on the uncontrolled and often indiscriminate use of pesticides, especially dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (commonly known as DDT), and the irreparable environmental damage caused by these chemicals. The public outcry Carson generated by the book motivated the U.S. Senate to form a committee to
Rachel Carson had received several attacks by chemical and agricultural industries due to her book “Silent Spring”, where she explained the consequences to the environment and human health of using pesticides. She was being accused of radical and unqualified scientist, who wanted to keep alive all the insects that spread diseases in humans and plants. She was described as being hysterical woman and her work as junk science. However, if we read who was Rachel Carson, the arguments are misguided. Rachel Carson was an outstanding scientist and science
And this evil chain of pesticides is going to drop us all like flies one by one. Rachel Carson has strengths and I believe there are no weaknesses involved. She talks very highly of what is going on in the world and explains how it should be stopped and what it is causing. Carson does not get emotional when speaking about it but does say that it is very dangerous and that people need to be cautious with what they are doing, though they had no idea what they were
b.Rachel Carson was among the first to warn against the pollution of the environment :"As crude as the cave man's club, the chemist barrage has been hurled against the fabric of life.
In the book Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s main concern is the widespread use of synthetic pesticides and their impact on the environment. Carson concentrates on a commonly used pesticide in the 1950s called DDT. She opposes the indiscriminate spraying of DDT because it has profound consequences on the environment, humans and animals. Carson collected information about how the DDT can cause cancer in humans, harm animals such as birds and remained in the environment for long periods of time. Subsequently, the chemicals in the pesticides are extremely harmful so she tries to raise awareness and convince others that there are better alternatives.
Rachel Carson was a scientist and author who took a topic which had hitherto been only of interest to fellow scientists and opened it up to the masses. During her lifetime, she took up many causes in support of wildlife and the protection of species and protecting the natural landscape from potential molestation from developers and others who would destroy indigenous habitats. Among her many missions was to make people aware of the hazards of certain chemicals on the environment, such as pesticides on vegetation as examined in her most famous work Silent Spring.
Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United States
In 1962, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring and was greeted with a roar of protest and approval. After years and years of controversy and skepticism surrounding its argument, Silent Spring was and still is recognized as a perceptive warning of things in progress and things to come. The book set the stage for the first real and effectual environmental movement.
Biologist and writer Rachel Carson was born in 1907 on May 27, Pennsylvania. In 1929 she graduated, and went on to further work at J-Hopkins University. Her well-known book, Silent Spring, led to her findings and helped to shape an environment.
Rachel Carson’s research created controversy over the use of synthetic chemicals, but it also set the platform for the movement of environmental protection making herself the first known environmentalist. She tore down the idea that nature was too powerful to be influenced by humankind. The use of chemicals disrupts the delicate natural cycle of life which all living things depend on. From scientific revolution to industrial revolution the use of scientific development to alter ones relationship with nature has vastly changed. Shelly first explored scientific revolution in her novel Frankenstein.
Also involved within the U.S. Forest Services as a member was Rachel Carson, who was also an American marine biologist and conservationist. Carson directed her attention to conservation after quitting her job as a biologist and dedicating herself to awaken the public by exposing the unknown terrors of pesticides that scientists did not want the public to be aware of with her book, Silent Spring. Carson’s work had a huge impact within society and conservation regulation movements, resulting into more than 40 bills passed in Congress to take back the environment. Carson maintains a remarkable message for the modern utilitarian conservation movement emphasizing the effects of unregulated chemical use and a push for government legislation with the central theme of nature existing for the people. Carson’s work directly influenced the federal utilitarian conservation movement through the 11 years after its publication.
When the Pen Was Mightier Than the Sword: Rachel Carson's Use of Prose to Change the World The famous author and ecologist, Rachel Carson, singlehandedly managed to start an environmental movement with the power of her writing. The sharp contrast of the beauty that she described and the disaster that was happening prompts many a reader to take up arms and defend the world that they live in. Rachel used her writing talent to emphasize the contrast between how the world used to be and what it had and will become. Her powerful words created images within the readers minds of the horrors to come if nothing happens, by giving us glances of what had already happened.
Rachel Carson played a pivotal role in shaping the Environmental Movement and American culture because of her honest, direct disclosure of the matters at hand. Although Carson was not the first person to make these scientific discoveries, she was able to radically change the way millions of Americans perceived the environment and the dangers of toxic chemicals to themselves through vivid, articulate, yet easily understandable language. For instance, in her chapter titled “Elixirs of Death,” she says “For these chemicals are now stored in the bodies of the vast majority of human beings, regardless of age. They
This is an efficient strategy. It makes her audience want to get involved and preserve the natural resources the environment has to offer. In her essay she describes the devastating effects chemicals have on the environment with such conviction; it might make the reader feel obligated to make changes in his or her own life to help the natural world. Rachel Carson uses an assertive tone to get her point across. She has a one-sided argument and is very aggressive to those who oppose her point of view. She is very effective at stating her opinion to her audience.
