When Nixon won his second term burglars broke into the Democratic Campaign Headquarters in Washington’s Watergate Complex. Tracks were found leading to government officials. The Nixon administration denied having the opponent building be broken into, but it was soon found that he did. Nixon was recording conversations in the Oval Office. Nixon was told to give up the tapes but he did not. He thought that he was the president and he was above the constitution. American democracy was made to not have a king, but Nixon thought he was the king, he thought he was above the law. The decision was taken to court and it was ruled 8-0 against Nixon and he had to give up the tapes.
Richard Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal left no doubt to his involvement of being impeached. During the Nixon Administration, he was able to prevent colleges from being gender biased and allowing both male and female to have equal opportunity and receiving financial aid as well as competing in sports. He was able to establish the Environmental Protection Agency. He also worked to create a relationship between the U.S and the Middle East. Unfortunately, even with all of the accomplishments, he was able to have, everyone will remember Richard Nixon as the president who was involved in the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal left an asterisk by his legacy while being in the office, the results left him with having to resign and with him facing criminal charges as well, the Scandal became well known to the public in the summer of 1974. Through my essay, I will discuss why I am intrigued by the Watergate scandal, and discuss what if Richard Nixon never got caught on the audio tape?
The most famous event of Richard Nixon’s presidency was the Watergate Scandal. Some people were trying to get President Nixon reelected so they decided to spy on the opposing party, the democratic party. The second time they broke in, they were caught. Nixon tried to cover it up which is what got him in trouble. He kept tapes of all his conversations in the Oval Office. The Supreme court made Nixon release the tapes. Nixon knew he was going to be impeached, so he resigned. He was the first president to ever resign from being president.
Five burglars, discovered to be connected with the campaign to re-elect Nixon, were caught breaking into the Democratic National Head Quarters in the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. The Democratic National Headquarters were responsible for raising money and for coordinating campaigns for democratic candidates. During the hearing of these burglars, it came to the attention of the court, that Nixon installed tape recorders in the oval office and refused to give them up. After the court forced him to hand over the evidence, he released edited transcripts that didn’t meet the courts orders. Nixon’s lawyers argued that through ‘executive privilege’, “the ability of the president to keep certain communications private if disclosing those communications
June 17, 1972 a group of criminals started tapping into the white house at the nearby watergate apartment complex where the scandal got it’s name. The secret service quickly caught on and soon the criminals were caught and convicted. There was no problem with this until a few weeks later Nixon ordered the FBI to stop investigation on this because they were already caught and convicted President Nixon ended up with the tapes that the criminals had recorded and he ended up giving over a few tapes but not all the tapes he had. President Nixon resigned soon after because the media was making it too much for him to handle and everyone hated him making him the first president to resign from office. His successor Eisenhower soon pardoned him of all his crimes and was never convicted for the watergate
Nixon’s impeachment (watergate Scandal) : Nixon made three major speeches on the Watergate scandal during 1973 and 1974. The first was on April 30, 1973, in which he announced the departure of Dean, Haldeman and Ehrlichman. A more defiant speech was delivered on August 15, 1973. Perhaps the politically most difficult speech was the one on April 29, 1974, in which Nixon released partial transcripts of the White House tapes. Also nixon’s last days in office came in late July and also early August 1974. The house judiciary committee voted to accept three of four proposed articles of Impeachment with some Republicans voting with democrats to recommend impeachment of the president.
As president, Nixon's achievements included forging diplomatic ties with China, the first president to do this, and the Soviet Union. He was responsible for withdrawing US troops from an unpopular war in Vietnam. However, Nixon's involvement in Watergate tarnished his legacy and deepened American cynicism about government. During the early 1970’s, a scandal took place at the hands of former president, Richard Nixon. Richard Nixon wanted to ensure that he got the chance to get reelected. He took extreme measures to do so, one of those extreme measures included espionage. On June 17, 1972, five burglars were taken down to the police station after breaking into the Watergate complex buildings in Washington, D.C. The five burglars; James McCord, Virgilio Gonzalez, Frank Sturgis, Eugenio Martinez, and Bernard Baker. “These five men broke into Headquarters for the Democratic National Committee, which was located in the Watergate hotel. This triggered the entire scandal and eventually led to Nixon’s demise.”
Throughout years of politics in America, two of our nation's leaders have have shown what happens behind the curtains in the white house. Although forty years apart, president Trump's recent actions has show many similarities to those of President Nixon in the 1970s. The two men have been involved in situations that, at first glance, appear different in most ways, however upon a deeper look, the Trump administration's ties with Russia is a situation quite like Watergate. As the five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate hotel and office complex, the truth behind a well hidden scandal began to snowball out of control.
On June 17th, 1972 a political scandal occurred in the United states. Four cuban americans and one american broke into the Democratic national headquarters at the Watergate office complex. Five burglars were caught and it was discovered that the President Nixon administration was involved. There were also other things discovered such as the bugging of political offices and FBI investigations on Mr. Nixon's Political Opponents. The scandal was then investigated by the U.S. congress, and they soon found out that Nixon recorded all of his meetings and asked for the tapes. After some refusal Nixon finally handed the tapes over, but one thing was missing. There was an 18.5 minute gap in one tape.
On June 17, 1972, There was a break-in at the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate complex. President Nixon saw hundreds of Anti War protestors. They held signs mocking his slogan and Nixon became quite nervous, even though he had way more supporters. Despite the fact that Nixon along with everyone else knew he was going win,
When the “Watergate Seven” broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office Complex, none of them could have imagined the scandal which would soon erupt. Following the initial break-in on July 17, 1972, a cover up was initiated by the Nixon administration to hide the fact that the burglary was ordered by Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President (CREEP). After two years of investigations and trials, Nixon's cover up blew up and he was indicated for obstruction of justice. In the end, Nixon chose to resign as president instead of facing impeachment. Although the Nixon administration endeavored to cover up its involvement in the Watergate burglary, political investigators were able to uncover the White House's
Patriotism means to stand by the country not by the president. Though everyone agrees that Colson will be sent to jail if he caught they disagree whether he should have worked for Nixon in the Watergate scandal. Colson was offered a position to help Nixon with special interactions such as getting rid of the men who released “Pentagon Papers” and help Nixon win the 2nd election. Charles Colson should not have agreed to work for Nixon with the Watergate scandal for three reasons. He has a family he would lose, there would be punishment, and he would jeopardize national security.
“No words can describe the depths of my regret and pain at the anguish my mistakes over Watergate have caused the nation and the presidency — a nation I so deeply love and an institution I so greatly respect.” - Richard Nixon (“President Ford Pardons Richard Nixon”). On August 8, 1974 the 37th President of the United States Richard Nixon was pardoned for the Watergate Scandal by President Ford. The Watergate Scandal was where four burglars were arrested for wiretapping and stealing documents from the Democratic National Committee, that was believed to be tied in with President Richard Nixon. President Ford was not justified for pardoning Richard Nixon in the event of the Watergate Scandal because, evidence was recovered from tapes in the White House, Richard Nixon resigned from Presidency Shortly following, and Nixon also tried to fire a lawyer investigating on the scandal, a special prosecutor appointed by the attorney general who was investigating on the scandal.
For many to forgive is one of the toughest thing to do, while it comes easy for others; a decision to pardon someone is beneficial whether individual or to a country as we see in President Gerald Ford decision to pardon Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal. President Nixon the only United States President to ever resign as a consequence of the Watergate scandal. (Whitehouse.gov) One has to understand that forgiveness is the beginning of a healing process and at the time the United States of America as a nation need to heal as the country recovery from the ordeal of the Vietnam War. In my opinion, President Nixon only logical choice was to resign because he would almost definitely would be charged with criminal charges and would have been impeached. On the other hand I believe that President Ford humbly put himself aside and put his country interest first, in life not many are willing to do that.
National crisis' do not simply happen. Events arise that cause the crisis to come into play, and that's exactly what happened with the Watergate Crisis. After Daniel Ellsberg (former defense analyst) leaked the Pentagon Papers on the Vietnam War when he decided that was information which should be available to the American public in 1971, the White House plumbers stole information from a psychiatrist's office to find filed information on Ellsberg. This was near the start of the cause of the national Watergate Crisis. In 1972, five men were arrested while trying to bug the offices of the Democratic National Commitee within the Watergate hotel. Two months later, President Nixon announced that an investigation into the Watergate buggings was completed and that nobody from the White House was involved. FBI agents were thinking that the operation came from the idea of political sabotage on the Nixon reelecton effort, so trial opens and multiple former Nixon aides are convicted in the conspiracy among the bugging men which causes a huge American distrust in their President thus begins America's "national nightmare".
