20. Narcissus’s cause of death was that he could not bear to leave his reflection, even for a moment - not even to eat, which caused him to sit and gaze at his reflection until he died.

21. It demonstrates the gods’ influence over people on Earth by showing that having conceit and obsession with beauty can result in serious punishment. For example, when Narcissus dismissed Echo, he was punished for thinking that everyone who loved him wasn’t beautiful enough for him and forced to fall in love with his reflection, which ended up becoming his downfall and causing his death.

Soon after, the wealthy couple’s son returned from Kyoto and watched the girl, who didn’t know she was being watched, care for his mother. He soon developed an admiration for her skill and tact and fell in love with her. He, like the laborers in the field wanted to remove the bowl from her head. Although, he only cared for her nature and didn’t think her looks mattered. When he realized how he felt, he confessed his love for her to his mother, who was outraged, because she didn’t want his son be in love with a servant; she wanted him to have a suitable wife with a rich dowry. Despite his mother’s efforts, he still constantly persisted and said that he loved the bowl-girl. Exasperated, she called in her relatives who agreed with her and thought that he should “marry a rich girl and bring honor to the family.” When the son remained steadfast, the wife sent away all the servants, ordering the girl to cook a huge meal, scrub the kitchen, and wash and polish all the lacquered cups and plates.
