How Did Michelangelo Influence The Renaissance

Michelangelo is a renowned sculptor, painter and architect known for his artwork in the Italian renaissance. He is celebrated mostly for his sculptures including Pieta, and David; and for his Sistine Chapel Frescoes, Genesis, and The Last Judgment. (Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564).) However these are only a few of his many artworks, most of which have been destroyed, but still left a great impact on the Renaissance, and Western civilization. (La Renaissance Italy) Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475, and lived until 1564. He was born in Caprese, Italy, but shortly moved to Florence, the place he would always call his home. At the age of 13 Michelangelo apprenticed Domenico Ghirlandaio, who taught him how to paint. Then at the age of 14, Michelangelo went to live with Lorenzo de’ Medici, a prominent art benefactor in Florence. There he learned about philosophy and politics from Medici and his knowledgeable inner circle of friends; this cultural experience influenced many of his artworks. In addition Michelangelo had deep faith in god, which he saw in the human body. He therefore was disinterested in sculpting anything but the human body. (Hartt 609) He would try to capture the human spirit in his sculptures, and try to make them look perfect, which even he could not fully comprehend. However he rarely ever finished his sculptures. This can be seen as symbolic of not being able to complete this task of perfection, but still having the courage to take it on. (Lucey-Smith 203) Michelangelo’s style of sculpting was contour line. He would start by roughly drawing the contours of the figure on the surface of the stone, and then carve away at the extra stone. He saw this as liberating the figure from the block. (Hartt
