Martin Luther King Jr. was a Civil rights leader and clergyman whose life was devoted to achieving equality for all Americans. Martin Luther King was an educated black men living in an incredibly volatile time in American history. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th 1969 to Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. He had two siblings, Daniel Williams King, and Christine King (Ferris). As a student, King was educated through the segregated public school system. Despite not having the advantages afforded to whites of that era, he did well and was accepted into Morehouse College without actually graduating from high school. King studied both medicine and law at Morehouse College, then pursued and was awarded his doctorate at Boston College. He eventually began to think every time they made progress, they took two steps back. When the blacks tried to march without King in the civil rights march, it turned very bloody and violent and pretty much turned into an all-out war between police officers and blacks. The police officers brought out nightsticks and tear gas, which was so ridiculous since they were not doing anything to anyone just marching and pleading for equality. They nicknamed the march, ‘Bloody Sunday,” for good reason. Many of the marchers were hospitalized covered in blood. During the third march, King made sure he led it and instead of it turning violent, King made everyone bow their heads in prayer and turn back. This caused King to lose a lot of followers, but he did not want anyone else getting hurt. King did do some good in that. It sparked the interest of The Voting Rights Act of 1964.
