How Did Martha Graham Integrate The Themes Of History

Countless artists have created works that integrate themes of historical events. Martha Graham, also known as the Mother of Modern Dance, has produced several renowned pieces with this. I believe that her piece, Panorama, is a great example of a piece that uses history that is timeless. The dance was choreographed in 1935 for students at Bennington College in Vermont during their summer dance workshops. These workshops contained unique American modern dancers and choreographers that shared their ideas and technique. The piece is separated into three sections named, "Theme of Dedication," "Imperial Theme," and "Popular Theme”. It premiered on August 14th, 1935. The set was designed by Arch Lauterer and Mobiles were created by Alexander Calder. Panorama was performed by 35 women all wearing red skirts and matching tops. The stock market crashed so people lost their jobs, and many women were fired so men could have more job opportunities. Women were left to work in the house and take care of the children as housewives. Before this, women were just beginning to gain more rights, and now during this time they were watching them being taken away again. This left women very angry and frustrated. Dance served as a great outlet to express these feelings to the public. I agree with the decision to reconstruct the piece in present day. Kim Jones restaged the piece for 33 dancers from University of North Carolina Charlotte, Charlotte Mecklenburg public schools, Charlotte Ballet and local choreographers. Dancers performed two performances together with the Martha Graham Dance Company at the Knight Theater.
