How Did Harold Krebs Change In Soldiers Home

Transitions in Life Numerous people all over the states join a military branch. Some are forced with war and others are not. Soldiers that have war experience might experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) when returning home. In the story of “Soldier Home”, Harold Krebs seems to have quite a few symptoms of this disorder. Prior to his war services, Krebs experiences conformity, connections, and his faith; however, after the war he has a difficult time adjusting back to civilian life. Harold Krebs personality in the image with his fraternity brothers shows how differently, he was before he joined the Marines. Hemingway spoke of “A picture which shows him among his fraternity brothers, all of them wearing exactly the same height and style collar” (Hemingway 133). In the picture, Krebs seems to be the most popular guy because he was in a fraternity group. It also shows that Krebs was in a place where he was able to connect or conform to his fraternity peers. His fraternity brothers made him feel part of a family. He was excited and enjoyed his life as a college student. He needed to be heard by the others in his town, but “His town had heard too many atrocity stories to be thrilled by actualities” (Hemingway 133) that they did not want to listen to Krebs stories. The community did not care what Krebs was thinking in his mind, or how he was feeling. Krebs had no choice but to tell small lies about the war because the community could not capture what actually happened during the war. Krebs stories would have too much information that the people were unprepared to listen or know about.
