Born a slave in the year 1818 lived a man called Alexander Price. Alexander Price was a slave worker and worked along with another slave named Frederick Douglass. As kids Frederick and Douglass would play together all the time. Even though they would be beaten for having fun Frederick and Alexander always dreamed of being free from slavery. They both had dreams of having a beautiful wife and children. They would talk all the time about how they hated being slaves and often would plan to escape, but they never followed through with their plans to try and be free because they were after of being beaten or whipped to death or maybe even murdered.

In 1818, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, who is known as Frederick Douglass, was brought into the world as a slave. He spent 20 years of his life as a slave. He was sent from master to master in Maryland, trying to escape with each one. He had met a woman named Anna Murray, who was about five years older than him, and was a free black woman. Meeting her restored his faith in being free one day. He finally succeeded in escaping on September 3rd, 1838 by hopping aboard a train going north. He and Anna settled in New Bedford and while they were there, they changed their surname to Douglass.

Frederick Douglass was one of the most influential men of the anti-slavery movement. He stood up for what he believed in, fought hard to get where he got and never let someone tell him he could not do something. Frederick Douglass made a change in this country that will always be remembered.

The reform movement that I feel best represents Frederick Douglass’s statement would be the Abolition movement. His statement goes with this movement because he had lead the abolitionist movement and his main goal was to free all slaves. Douglass firmly believed in equality among all people. He had once been a slave, and he knew how horribly mistreated they were. Slaves had been degraded by a majority of white people. It would have seemed as if all odds were against them. They had been denied justice for years, they had been oppressed, and they had been treated terribly, and made to feel like they were lower than the white man. The fact that Douglass himself was or African-American descent, most likely made the movement more difficult to accomplish.

Douglass lived the majority of his life as a free man after escaping his bondage at age 20. However, everything he did and accomplished over the course of his life was influenced and affected by his past as a slave. Just as slavery shaped Douglass’s existence, the politics of the 19th century would not escape the pressure of the debate over slavery. From the American Revolution to the Civil War, slavery embedded itself into the Southern economy and culture to the point where the argument over its expansion would necessitate complex political workarounds, and break up the national political parties of the last few decades down sectional lines.

He has written speeches that transformed the civil rights movement from before the Civil War and to this present day. He influenced the rise of organizations including women’s group and African American groups to fight for their rights as citizens of the United States.

Throughout history, there have been many black-rights activists that use their power of speaking to fight injustice and promote equality. One of those activists, who fought for equality with the power of his words, was Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was an African American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He had a vision of the roles of African Americans during and after the war to ensure they receive citizenship and freedom. Frederick Douglass faced many tribulations throughout his life and that only made his speeches for equality and justice that much more powerful because he was a victim of injustice. Douglass believed that if African Americans want to have citizenship and be seen as equals, they must prove that they deserve it. In order to prove that African Americans deserve citizenship, Douglass encouraged them to enlist and join the fight for equality. Although there were obstacles in seeing his vision implemented Douglass stood his ground and fought until his vision becomes reality.

Some of the things Fredrick Douglass did to better society was spread the word about civil rights by sharing his horrible experiences by publishing books and giving speeches to influence people to fight for what they think is right (Timeline of Frederick Douglass and Family). He also reached out to Abraham Lincoln during the civil war to recruit black soldiers so they could fight for what they saw was right (Freedman & Watts). He wasn’t just fighting for African American civil rights, he was also fighting for woman’s civil rights as a women’s suffragist (Sundstrom).

A person who is known for committing a act of civil disobedience is Martin Luther King Jr. In the piece of text Letter from Birmingham Jail, King states,”You express a great deal of anxiety over our willingness to break laws. This is certainly a legitimate reason. Since we diligently urge people to obey the Supreme Court Decision of 1954....”(King 7). Martin Luther King encouraging the black community in disobeying the Supreme Court’s decision is committing the act of civil disobedience. This action that King has took upon supports my position because shows what civil disobedience is and therefore how it is happening.
