“The surest test of discipline is it’s absence.” Clara Barton said this meaning that you only know your discipline when you aren’t using it. She stopped working as a clerk and became a nurse in 1864, she eventually became the superintendent of nurses. Clara worked close to the battlefield and specialized in helping soldiers. She spent 4 years searching for missing soldiers on request of President Abraham Lincoln.
Clara’s health got really bad so she went to Europe for treatment, she came back from Europe in 1872. While she was in Europe she researched the Red Cross in the Franco Prussian War. When she came back home Clara campaigned to get a Red Cross in the United States, which payed off in 1881. She directed Red Cross work for 23 years, she resigned in 1904. Clara Barton died on April 12, 1912 at the age of 91 in Glen Echo, Maryland.
