Our world would not be the same without one particular woman. Amelia Earhart has changed this world for the better. She once said, while taking her first plane ride, “By the time I got two or three hundred feet off the ground, I knew I had to fly.” Ever since she was a little girl she had been fascinated with airplanes. When she was twenty-three, a man by the name of Frank Hawks gave Amelia her first ride in a plane. She flourished as a aviator and a strong role model in women’s rights. She was an extreme tomboy. She would hunt rats with a .22 rifle and climb trees (www.californiamuseum.org). Amelia was born on July, 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. She was born to Amelia Otis Earhart and Samuel Staton Earhart. She grew very close to her parents as time went on. She also lived with her younger sister, Grace Muriel Earhart. Amelia’s father provided her family with a steady income by working as a railroad clerk and a lawyer (www.anb.org). Through school, Amelia was a wonderful student in science but was not very social. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1916 (www.pbs.org). After graduating, Earhart began college at Ogontz School University but left to volunteer as a nurse for wounded World War I soldiers. In April of 1928, Amelia got offered the chance to be on flight while at work. At first, she thought it was a prank call. That was, until she realized that the man’s tone was serious. She left Trepassey harbor with pilot, Wilmer “Bill” Stultz and co-pilot, Louis E. “Slim” Gordon on June 17, 1928 (www.californiamuseum.org). Earhart packed the minimum amount possible. She brought a toothbrush, a comb, two handkerchiefs, and some cold cream. She kept all her belongings in a small knapsack (Forney Museum). Amelia developed a friendship with George Putnam, a publisher, during the preparation for the transAtlantic flight. After refusing his proposal three times, she finally agreed to marry him but referred to their marriage as a “partnership” with “dual control”. They were married on February 7, 1931
