The most important cause of World War I was the alliances and competition because countries felt threatened by other countries’ power so they created alliances to feel secure. Alliances were groups made up of countries and if a country were to be attacked their allied countries would back them up. There were two alliances, the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy; the Triple Entente included Britain, France, and Russia. Competition was increasing in Europe because of economic rivalry. Great Britain felt threatened by Germany’s economic growth and Germany felt threatened by Russia because Russia would be unbeatable when they took over industrial territories. Germany wasn’t much of a threat because Great Britain an advantage over Germany if an attack were to happen. Germany and Austria-Hungary had a major disadvantage because France could attack from the left and Russia could attack from the right. Germany knew of the disadvantage they had so they created the Schlieffen plan to avoid being attacked from France and Russia at the sametime. The Schlieffen plan consisted of Germany quickly defeating France so that when it came to attacking Russia they could focus all their troops towards them. When the war started Germany took the opportunity to activate the Schlieffen plan. Alliances was a huge deal in World War 1 because Serbia would’ve never had the advantage of having the bigger army over Austria-Hungary and having the advantage of attacking Austria-Hungary and Germany from the left and right. Austria-Hungary wouldn’t have been able to defend off the Triple Entente if they weren’t allied with Germany because Germany was protecting them. Germany came up with the Schlieffen plan to help win the war but unfortunately things didn’t go as planned so the plan didn’t work as well as it should
