How China-Hong Kong Relations Have Resulted in Today’s Occupy Movement

Introduction
This paper will use various scholarly articles to explain how China-Hong Kong relations ultimately impacted Hong Kong and resulted in the present-day pro-democracy protests (Occupy) throughout the territory.

British Colonization and Beginning of Settlement
The British occupied Hong Kong in 1841, which provided a significant socio-economic growth. Stability was achieved through the principle of synarchy that endorsed the Chinese elite to enter into administrative and bureaucratic affairs. By the twentieth century, Chinese population had risen exponentially . The population was largely comprised of young, male migrants from China, who often commuted between their homeland and the industrial community. Socio-economic classes were divided between merchants and manufactures, clerical, and workers and labourors. Merchants and manufactures were in an advantageous position to form the ruling elite in China, because of their ownership of money and productive capital, respectively. The majority of citizens were of lower class .
On February 2, 1841, Captain Elliot proclaimed the basis of the colonial governments policy toward the Chinese. The proclamation implicated that Chinese-natives be governed under their own laws, and that foreigners enjoy the security of British law. Sir Henry Pottinger
