Terror and Change in America After the 9/11 Attacks It is indisputable that the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, changed America, and the entire globe, forever. Despite the fact that the United States of America has always been considered one of the strongest and safest nations in the world, Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda matrix managed to take over the skies using commercial jetliners as weapons of mass destruction, causing the nation to tremble in fear and terror for many years to follow. The attack prompted America to dramatically change its attitude about safety and protection in a manner that would have effects that that would change its relationship with the rest of the world. Consequently, changes from …show more content…
New procedures and screenings were incorporated and performed by the Transportation Security Administration at every commercial airport checkpoint in the country. Prior to 9/11, showing up at the airport a few minutes before a flight was no reason to stress about. Passengers would show up at the ticket counter, collect their boarding pass, and head onto the easy-breezy security search. Walking through the metal detector with a beverage in hand and unremoved shoes was nothing to cause a commotion about. Nonetheless, all that is part of the past, long lines, body scans, and even bottles of water are issues that travelers have to deal with on daily basis. Security searches are now scrutinized and highly monitored. While the changes are embraced by many travelers, considering air travel safer; for others, the changes caused significant increases in travel time. Furthermore, some travelers even say that the security searches that are in place are extreme and even invade their privacy as they have to undergo x-ray machines that are far more revealing than they would agree …show more content…
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, deportations have had a massive increase which has nearly doubled since 9/11. According to the Department of Homeland Security’s Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, there were nearly 200,000 annual deportations between 1999 and 2001. By 2009-2010, deportations were at its record highest of nearly 400,000 (Department of Homeland Security, 2017). Overall, the 9/11 attacks had numerous impacts, locally and abroad. Tourism to America fell for three years after the attacks and did not see an increase until 2004. In 2010, over 59 billion tourists visited America (Villemez, 2014). The radical Islamist group that attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, caused damages and effects that reached the entire globe; it would forever change the lives of millions. Innocent lives were lost in the 9/11 horrific attacks, however, those that survived and were residents of NYC would also suffer repercussions. A report released by the Fiscal Policy Institute demonstrated how 105,200 NYC employees had lost their jobs in the fourth quarter of 2001 (Parrot,
After the September 11th attacks the United States had major changes to airport security and air travel. At Denver International Airport in Colorado opened in 1995, for security the installed two security checkpoints, since the 9/11 attacks the checkpoints have been gradually expanded to take up almost two-thirds of the level 5 (Bearden). This is a reminder of how much aviations security has changed since 9/11, they have added X-ray machines, metal and explosive detectors, and millimeter body scanner. As Bearden states “I am old enough to remember when boarding an airplane was simple: One walked through an exterior door and took a short hike across the ramp before clambering up a mobile stairway.” Security was first set into place in the late
It is believed that the CIA was researching two men they found to be suspicious, and watched them purchase weapons and similar clothing before the attack on 9/11 occurred, but failed to relay this information to the FBI and other unsuspecting personnel. These men boarded the plane, despite possessing weapons, and the result was tragic. Today, it is difficult to pass through airport security without passing through multiple check points and being questioned for various items that could be potentially harmful. In personal experience and watching the news, I have seen individuals with a razor for shaving in suitcases when boarding a plane at the airport, or lighters for smoking, and they are almost immediately questioned about it. Airport security and screening has greatly improved since the attack on 9/11. In 2006, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported that it confiscated over 13 million prohibited items at airport passenger security checkpoints; 1.6 million were knives and in one week during April 2011, 18 firearms were confiscated (70). Airport security has drastically increased, and it has helped the United States to maintain secure flights for passengers in the years since
Our nation is built around the drastic events that we have had to endure. These events shape our laws and sometimes force us to reexamine our constitution. When the laws are made with the stem of fear the laws can become destructive. We often see this when traumatic events unfold in our nation. 9/11 is one of those events. Not only did the historically traumatic event of 9/11 shape our nation, it shaped all of the world. The Twin Towers were the major buildings of the entire complex that made the World Trade Center. The Twin Towers themselves were the tallest buildings in New York City. They each had 110 stories. Together they provided the room needed to accommodate about 35,000 people for 430 companies. In addition to this, they attracted people from all around the world. A rough estimate would say they attracted roughly 70,000 New Yorker’s and tourists daily. (1)
Steptember11, 2001 there were three; airplane’s that have been hijacked by Islamic terrorists. Three planes crashed into U.S landmarks, The Pentagon, North and South ends of The World Trade Center. The attack claimed the lives of 2,996 Americans, including 19 hijackers and caused the deadliest attack in America’s history but also in in Firefighters and law enforcement history as well. Soon after the attack, suspicion for the attack fell on AL-Qaeda the Government quickly responded with The War on Terror and invaded Afghanistan. The man who thought to be behind the attack was Osama Bin Laden. The attack had a significant impact on the economic. In New York City, About 430,000 job-months and 2.8 billion dollars in wages were lost in the three
The 9/11 terrorist attacks resulted in a dramatic change in our nation’s attitudes and concerns about safety and vigilance. It introduced new policies like the USA Patriot Act, prioritizing national security and defense, often at the expense of civil liberties. America has been affected by 9/11 through ongoing wars, immigration and deportation, airlines, and surveillance. U.S. troops invaded Afghanistan in an attempt to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban government less than a month after 9/11. In March 2003, the United States invaded Iraq and deposed President Saddam Hussein.
Being an American, you know about the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon. Can you imagine having a relationship with even one of the almost 3,000 citizens killed in the plane crashings? Do you think your beliefs in national security and trust in foreign countries would change? The terrorists attacks on September 11th, 2001 changed many Americans minds about certain aspects in America, and also worldwide. The main factors that contributed to the change in Americans are political and religious beliefs, national security throughout our country, and the world view.
Manhattan. September 11, 2001. Until this day the eleventh of september had always been a regular day, a usual day, a safe day. It was a beautiful Tuesday morning when thousands of workers had begun to make their way to the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Washington DC. Eager tourists and home sick patrons made their way to the airport and catch planes California bound. What they don’t know is that 19 hijackers from the terrorist group, Al Qaeda have also scrambled their way to the planes. What happened then would change American way of life forever.
September 11th 2001 2,996 people killed and more than 6,000 others wounded. These deaths came the collapse of the twin towers , the centerpiece of the world trade center. But this wasn’t all. The pentagon was hit that same day and another plane headed for the capital building crashed. The damage cost up to 2 trillion dollars for all repairs. The Perpetrators Terrorists from the Al-qaeda group. This tragedy has changed and affected this country in many ways like the new changes in airport laws and security and how are country is still affected by the terrorists with the war in afghanistan.
They have been called overly intrusive and embarrassing, and the American Civil Liberties Union receives many complaints consistently. We Won’t Fly, one of a few public interest groups that protests the TSA’s enhanced security measures, seeks to convince the public to use other modes of transportation until the pat-downs and scanners are no longer used as security in airports. Members of Congress have expressed concern. John Pistole, the chairman of the House Committee of Homeland Security, attempted to convince the TSA to reconsider enhanced pat-down measures because of their invasive nature. The Electronic Privacy Information Center issued a lawsuit against the TSA calling for the suspension of the scanners, because they believe the scanners are an invasion of privacy and have potential health risks.
On September 11th of 2001, more than 3,000 people died during the terrorist attacks. The event changed the lives of not just the people whose loved ones died on that day, but also of those who belonged to the Islamic world. The experience of Muslims who lived in America in 2001 and those who were yet to come here would never be the same again. After 9/11, the number of hate crimes against Muslims in the United States increased and their everyday lives changed forever due to the rise of islamophobia and the vicious influence of the American media.
Not only did 9/11 impact America physically, but it also took a huge toll psychologically. People responded to the terrorist attack with fear and started developing feelings of intolerance for immigrants, specifically immigrants who were or appeared to be from the Middle East. For example, people known as Sikhs, who followed Indian religion are targeted because they wear turbans, which are stereotypically associated with Muslims. Since the fatal attack, hate crimes associated with people of Islamic background have risen in the U.S. Mosques and temples of those who practice Islam as a religion have been targeted. Innocent people who are Arabs or are Muslim, now have to live with the unfair stereotype that says all Muslims/Arabs are terrorists.
September 11, 2001 began as a beautiful day with a clear blue sky, yet today people recognize it as “the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack”(September 11, 2001 2016). These attacks conducted by the terrorist group, Al Qaeda, killed thousands of people and left their loved ones shocked and devastated. At first, the people thought the plane crashing into one of the twin towers was just an accident; it was not until the second collision that people realized America was truly under attack. Though this tragedy lasted only a day, people continue to feel the effects 15 years later, and most likely will in the future. After this terrible day, the security at many places– such as airports –was strengthened greatly. Many people, however, continue to live with the looming fear that another tragedy like this may recur. The attacks of September 11, 2001 greatly affected my mother, Anita Kaplan, because after that tragic day, she became paranoid in regards to the safety of her and her family, afraid to travel on airplanes, and more aware of both the world news and her surroundings.
As a response to the 9/11 attacks, one would expect that the TSA would improve airport security. In reality, it's just security theater. Originally, the use of metal detectors and luggage x-rays in airport security checkpoints was enough. However, on December 25, 2009, an inbound international
2everything. Since 9/11 America has been a safer and more fearful place. We have developed safety from the event. We also developed many different organizations and programs such as the “secure Community”. We realized that we needed to change something. Terrorism also made immigration and deportation a big deal.2 In 2002, the bush administration came up with the “Department of Homeland Security”. This made the deportation level increase, almost double since 9/11. According to this administration there has been around 200,000 deportations annually. This number went even higher in 2004. It hit around 400,000 deportations annually. About half of those that were deported have had a criminal record. Even though most of them were low- level and non- violent. The “Secure Communities” program was made in 2008. This allowed the law enforcement to check if someone is an immigrant or not in a jail.
Many years ago airport security was not even an issue. People felt secure and safe and rarely worried about being searched. As time went on, the prevealance of terrorism became an increasing issue. There began more acts of terrorism by threatening and holding hostages on board commercial planes. As these acts continued, the government as well as citizens became vulnerable and an airport safety procedure was implemented as a way to ensure the safety of the United States. The implemented procedures over the years included a check and scan of all carry on and checked baggage, body scans, hire government airport employees, and a strict list of carry-on items. This made travelers feel safer as it decreased the ability of terrorist to commit
