Terror and Change in America After the 9/11 Attacks It is indisputable that the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, changed America, and the entire globe, forever. Despite the fact that the United States of America has always been considered one of the strongest and safest nations in the world, Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda matrix managed to take over the skies using commercial jetliners as weapons of mass destruction, causing the nation to tremble in fear and terror for many years to follow. New procedures and screenings were incorporated and performed by the Transportation Security Administration at every commercial airport checkpoint in the country. Prior to 9/11, showing up at the airport a few minutes before a flight was no reason to stress about. Passengers would show up at the ticket counter, collect their boarding pass, and head onto the easy-breezy security search. Walking through the metal detector with a beverage in hand and unremoved shoes was nothing to cause a commotion about. Nonetheless, all that is part of the past, long lines, body scans, and even bottles of water are issues that travelers have to deal with on daily basis. Security searches are now scrutinized and highly monitored. While the changes are embraced by many travelers, considering air travel safer; for others, the changes caused significant increases in travel time. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, deportations have had a massive increase which has nearly doubled since 9/11. According to the Department of Homeland Security’s Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, there were nearly 200,000 annual deportations between 1999 and 2001. By 2009-2010, deportations were at its record highest of nearly 400,000 (Department of Homeland Security, 2017). Overall, the 9/11 attacks had numerous impacts, locally and abroad. Tourism to America fell for three years after the attacks and did not see an increase until 2004. In 2010, over 59 billion tourists visited America (Villemez, 2014). The radical Islamist group that attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, caused damages and effects that reached the entire globe; it would forever change the lives of millions. Innocent lives were lost in the 9/11 horrific attacks, however, those that survived and were residents of NYC would also suffer repercussions.
