Love requires time and devotion to develop into a relationship. There will be times where you will have to give up on your relationship, because the circumstances are not favorable. Letting go does not mean you did not have the faith or affection for your partner, instead it reflects upon the ability to let go of someone for the sake of others. Relationships are something you cannot take advantage of, your partner is there to give you emotional and physical support. Young couples in their teens tend to be naïve about love, they are inexperienced compared to older couples who have experienced far more hardships of being in a committed relationship. Main Idea 2: In addition, it is reasonable to give up on a relationship when the circumstances are not in favor. Henry and Keiko’s love is very unfortunate as they are faced with obstacles just to see each other. Their situation was very uncommon, as the Chinese and Japanese were at war with one another, and Henry’s friendship with Keiko made him a traitor in the eyes of his own father. Henry’s father buys him a ticket back to Canton to “finish school”, “He’s just doing this to keep me from her,” (238). Henry’s mother defends her husband’s actions by justifying that he is doing this for Henry and yells at him for being such a disobedient son and for being friends with the enemy---Keiko. “Done enough? You have done plenty! You have taken sides with the enemy. The enemy of China---and America. We are allies. They are the enemy. You have become his enemy. And he still does this for you. For you” (239). These two quotes show constant interferences and unfavorable situations in henry’s relationship with Keiko. Resisting the urge to act foolish in an unfortunate event is a wise choice if an individual wishes the best for everyone around them. Main Idea 3: On the other hand, If you are devoted to someone, why would you give them up so fast? Henry’s choice to give up on Keiko seemed like a quick and easy decision to make, but maybe it was because he did not have enough patience or trust in her. After Henry had stopped receiving letters from Keiko, Ethel came into his life. He did indeed move on quick, and he did propose to Ethel after five months of dating. Some readers may point out that Henry’s lack of patience are showing during these crucial moments as he acts quickly. “‘Will you marry me?’ No sooner had Henry said it than alarms went off in his head. The realization that words aren’t toys to be played with, and hearts were at stake” (260). He may have proposed and moved on quickly, but, Henry takes Ethel’s innocence and heart into consideration when he proposed, there was no going back for Keiko now: “If he took another step toward the hotel, he knew he’d break Ethel’s heart, and he knew she didn’t deserve that” (264). He made a commitment to Ethel to marry her, and he was determined to fulfill it, unlike his courtship to Keiko.
