Honors College Essay

One of my favorite quotations is from John Wooden, former coach at UCLA; he states, “The most powerful leadership tool you have is your own personal example.” I am a perfect fit for Marquette University’s Honors Program because I am a natural leader, a strong communicator, and a well-rounded individual.

I am honored to have an opportunity to be considered for the National Junior Honor Society and I am extremely thankful for my teachers nominating me. I believe I have, and will, represent the NJHS five areas of focus (scholarship, leadership,character, service,and citizenship) throughout my academic career. First, scholarship is defined as knowledge acquired by study. Through leadership,character, service, and citizenship I have achieved this quality. I have strived daily to represent and distinguish myself by focusing on my studies; focusing on how I present myself to others; being a Christian and young leader.

I am confident in meeting the principles of the National Junior Honor Society through my determination and hard work. I have led younger friends and community members on a hiking trip and volunteered to babysit while my family rushed to the hospital. As a leader in my community, I make it my duty to keep everyone safe. Last year, I went away on a camping trip with a friend of mine and younger brothers. When we went on a hiking trip, I trailed behind with the boys to ensure their safety and make sure that they did not get left behind by the adults.

Throughout high school, I have always been a part of high honor roll, and as a junior and senior, I have been a member of National Honor Society. Because I do not participate in sports, I have always been purely dedicated to my schoolwork and getting exceptional grades. Being in the Honors Program at LLCC would not only continue by achievements in academic honors, but help me grow in my goals and plans for the future.

National Honors Society, and the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character establish the basis for a high-level student and young adult. Consistently, I strive to meet these standards and beliefs. The high standards held by the National Honors Society provide a positive basis for an exceptional young adult. By observing these standards, I hope to become an intelligent, respectable, and honorable student, that takes pride in his work and endeavors. The four pillars and beliefs of the National Honors Society will directly impact my future experiences and endeavors in many ways especially positively progressing my future academic career in a multitude of directions.

As I progress through my four years of high school, I hope to possess the qualities that separate a good student from a great student. Among these qualities are leadership, character, service, and scholarship; the four pillars of the National Honors Society. Along with maintaining grades and GPA, comes the responsibility of a student to exemplify great character and carry themselves in a respectful, appropriate manner. Being an athlete, and a part of a team, I have a lot of responsibilities to uphold. As an upperclassman, it is important that I pave the way for the younger girls on both my gymnastics and diving teams, in order to show them the appropriate way to act and treat others.

An accomplished Alaska high school coach is taking the reins of the Lane Community College cross country program this fall. Those are just figurative reins, of course, unlike the literal reins Bill Steyer has held in the past as a competitive sled dog musher.

Although my high school does not have many clubs, it has several athletic teams and a National Honors Society and National Junior Honors Society. The honor societies have the standard of a 3.5 GPA and the student must have attended the school for at least two years. The athletic teams include football, soccer, volleyball, tennis, women's and men's basketball, and track and field activities. We also have a student council, and to join student council, you must campaign by filling out paperwork and then you must make the people vote for us. For student council, our manifest functions would include creating pep rallies that would get the students involved.

During my freshmen year, I was a Residential Honors Student. I had to give it up because at the spring 2015, series of earthquakes devastated Nepal and it made a huge financial impact in my family. Therefore, my family who had financially supporting for my studies in US, could not afford me living in an honors residential hall for two years which was one of the requirements of the honors student. Hence, when I received an offer to be a Resident Adviser, I chose what was best for me at the moment, to hold on going to college in a much more affordable financial decision. Although, it has almost been a year, the aftershocks of the earthquake still shakes Nepal, which has not built any stronger financial stability in my family. Thus, this scholarship

Writing is the ability to express yourself and to communicate with others. College writing courses strive to provide students with the ability to do this. How can we give all students who have different values, language, and cultural background the ability to express themselves, to communicate, and to contribute in significant ways to the relationship with others locally and globally? Honors classes at times can be challenging. However, everyone has different perspectives on them. The difficulty of the courses usually vary by the instructor. Some teachers put a heavy load of work on their students and some give a balanced amount of work. I don't know what the teachers are like at your school but hopefully they won't be so cruel. My teachers were okay I guess.

Recently, I challenged myself to ski the lone double-black diamond at my local mountain. While this may seem enterprising in and of itself, it was a distinct challenge on this day owing to the fact that it was my first time back on skis in nearly three years. Up until then, depression had thwarted me from enjoying my preferred winter pastime. At the crest of the slope, I peered over the precipice and knew it would be strenuous, that my legs could give out, but I went for it anyway. My run happened to be a messy one and I did indeed fall, but how else would I get back into skiing shape and improve if I didn’t first try?

If admitted to the University Honors Program, I would expect to gain more knowledge through challenging courses. I would also expect to gain new ideas and opinions

As a student at Georgia College & State University I am always asked the question: “why did you choose a small liberal arts college when you could have easily gone to any larger, more recognized university?”. This is the question I am commonly faced with when discussing where I attend school with others who are unfamiliar with the unique liberal arts atmosphere. When I first began as a student at Georgia College I had no other explanation than that I was attracted to the small size and beautiful aesthetics of the physical campus. As time passed and as I became more aware of the components that make a liberal arts college so unique, my response grew as did my appreciation for the opportunity to attend a public liberal arts college.
