The Role Of Homophobia In The Black Community

In the article, How Homophobia Hurts Everyone by Warren J. Blumenfeld, Blumenfeld describes his experience growing up as a homosexual, and how homophobia affected him, as well as his family and peers. To begin, homophobia can be separated into two different catergories, personal homophobia and interpersonal homophobia. Personal homophobia can be described as a personal belief system, or prejudice that homosexuals, bisexual and transgender people are entitled to, should be disliked or remain powerless, due to their desires. They are also sometimes seen as psychologically disturbed, genetically modified or defective and overall, unfortunate human beings. While on the other hand, interpersonal homophobia refers to the personal prejudice or bias that affects relationships within individuals. An example of interpersonal homophobia could be making a joke, name calling, or insulting certain individuals or groups. This can be either verbal, physical or intimidation related.

The African American Health Program (AAHP) is a health program that focuses on minorities with health disparities, chronic health issues, and maternal and child care. It also provides preventive care through weekly health education classes and screenings as well as testing in the community. However, the program’s focus is on the African descendants with or without health problems to prevent and control diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer awareness, and prevention. In addition, the program provides and dental care and several HIV screenings in the communities and on school campuses. Besides these, it also provides maternal and child care that focuses on the prevention of infant mortality among African American, African, and Caribbean

In recent years, society has become more accepting towards the LGBTQ community; however, it is of vital importance to explore and understand why different races with differed cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs approach the subject in an adversely manner. Minorities, specifically Latinos and African Americans, tend to have a completely different experience than that of their Caucasian counterparts when it comes to exploring their sexuality and ultimately coming out to their families. It is important to analyze how the reaction of certain races towards the LGBTQ community, specifically transgender individuals, and how it ties back in to their cultural backgrounds. Besides all the homophobia and discrimination that some people in the LGBTQ community receive, people of color receive even more just for the fact the they’re people of color. In communities where’s mostly Latinos, there’s more homophobia, specially because there’s this “Machismo” thing that still happens, even though we are in the 21st century. Some ways that people deiced to let their feelings out is by art, art is piece of life that you can’t really go against or ague with. In the US everyone says we’re free, but are we? What about the black man afraid to walk down the street with his hood up, hoping he isn’t stopped by the police again? The gay teen that is bullied so badly that he is brought to the thought of death. Or the man wearing a turban being called a terrorist for following a religion? Injustice is still around today, maybe more than ever. Homophobia, Racism, and Police Brutality have led to crimes, arrests, and even death. These are injustices that need to be addressed and take care of.

This paper will continue on, researching the societal change/acceptance in the gay and lesbian community as no longer being unorthodox and with the stigma coming from the gay community itself.

As the years have gone by, you can see the change of how gays and lesbians are widely seen in mostly every tv show or movie in today’s society. This is something most of our own parents didn’t even grow up seeing gays throughout the media. Living in today’s time period, you’re able to see how the influence has changed the way people see gays and lesbians. The nation has become more accepting of the gay and lesbian culture verses back in the days of when our parents and even grandparents were our age. Not only was is rare to see homosexuals on television, it was portrayed negatively, and now you can see it portrayed positively.

The theory argues, pursues and considers how gender, race, sexual orientation and other categories of identity interact on many and often concurring levels of social relationships, therefore allowing discrimination and social inequity. Intersectionality explains how the notion of social injustice, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and belief-based bigotry such as religion are not independent of one another; instead, they are interconnected, and thereby reflect “intersectionality” in regards to social

Courage is standing up for what you believe is right, even when you know others will hate you or worse. There are multiple activists for the LGBTQ+ community, yet there have still been more hate crimes against the community. The community has been involved in hate crimes since the 1960s, and even before that. 50-60 or more years may seem like a long time to teenagers and young adults, but it’s actually not. People in the community have died to others acts against a person being with someone of the same sex or changing their gender identity. There are multiple reasons why hate crimes on the LGBTQ+ community need to be lowered drastically.

Each and every day, thousands of members among the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual) community are affected by hate crimes, bullying and even homicide. In fact, in just 2015 alone, the number of crimes and homicides reported against these members are staggering. According to The National Coalition of Anti-violence Programs, there were fifteen reported homicides. (Jindasurat & Waters, 2015) That is only the reported number of victims who were confirmed as part of this community. Can you imagine how many are actually affected each year? These people are being targeted because of who they are and how they choose to live their life. They are being targeted because they have stood up for who they are. I couldn’t imagine being targeted

People in America who choose to identify as members of L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community have been chastised and mistreated for years, specifically Black Americans. Thousands of people who identify as members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual community have been suppressed of the ability to love freely without being ridiculed. Every human around the world deserves to be loved, regardless of their sexual orientation. Identifying as a member of the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community does not make you abnormal. There is nothing troubling with liking the same sex, it does not classify you as anything less than a man or woman. Furthermore, society has created this negative notion about identifying as an L.G.B.T.Q.I.A member, we are all humans, with emotions. Homosexuality amongst the African American community is prevalent; it has its detriments and burdens on individuals. The effects of how Blacks are ostracized amongst the Black community is disheartening and is displayed through homophobia, violence, and acceptance.

I watched the movie American Beauty a couple of days ago and saw how homophobia might be a sign that the homophobic might be a homosexual. So I though I’d write about it. American Beauty centers on the last year of Lester Burnham’s life. Lester Burnham, played by Kevin Spacey, is married to Carolyn Burnham, played by Annette Betting, and their marriage is picture perfect on the outside, but the perfection is only superficially. Their marriage is based on projecting one image- a picture perfect suburbia lifestyle when it is in fact quite the opposite.
