Dear Molly, I’m a sophmore in highschool and everyday I get so much homework-it’s crazy. When I get home from school, I’m never motivated to my work. I know I should do it, but I really don’t want to. I know it sounds lame but honestly it's a daily struggle. All of my friends have this problem as well, but they just “deal with it” and do it anyway. I want to be like them but I don't know how they do it. I take six classes a day and that's at least 3-6 hours a night after I get home from my seven hour school day. Do you have any ideas on how I can stay motivated and do my homework? -Eleanor
Dear Homework-Hater, I have personal experience with this and I understand how hard it is. What I do is right when I get home, because I’m still in the
The dreaded topic of homework is discussed in this article. Students in EDU 360/560 will use ERIC online to access the following document for this reflection assignment and post using the template below. Gill, B.P., & Schlossman, S. L. (2004). Villian or Savior? The American Discourse on Homework, 1850 - 2003. Theory Into Practice, 43(3), 174 - 181.
We all view the benefits of homework differently. Homework can have many effects but it’s not as helpful to everyone as one may think. It can prove to be more stressful than beneficial, can confuse you more than help you, and doesn’t 100% help standardized testing. People need to understand what homework really is and how beneficial it actually is. They need to understand that homework doesn’t always help and that it can prove to be less helpful than
I believe that teachers shouldn't have more rule over helping children do their homework than their parents or guardians. My reasons are parents have the ability to help the kid with emotion. My second reason is parents can help their own kids do their homework. My third reason is parents can make time and will make time.
This article interviews Dr. Harrison Cooper, author and professor at Duke, about the current homework controversy. Media, along with many other outlets, discuss the homework controversy: is it unecessary or valuable practice? Cooper says that people's’ views on homework has changed very little and it has proven to be somewhat of a cycle. For example, throughout the 20th century people’s views have continued to flip back and forth for various reasons. Some of the reasons listed in the article is that homework puts too much stress on the child, they need to practice and exercise their brain, and needing to keep up with the Japanese (Walker). However, the actual amount of homework that students get has changed very little. For example, elementary
Do you think kids get too many trophies? In my opinion, we do. They make kids lazy, and can send the wrong message, but also, they have good intentions.
I know you tell me all the time that you would rather be doing other things instead of your work. If you broke up your schoolwork into different days you would also have time to do things you like to do such as playing video games, watching TV, and working outside. Another option that you could try would be to finish it all in one night and then have the rest of the week to do whatever. You may get
This is the beginning of my junior year at Memorial High School and I more and new goals that I want accomplish during this school year. My short term goals for this school year are completing homework on time, do more after school activities, and socialize more. Compared to last school year I’ve been getting more homework. As of right now, I have been turning in my assignments on time but, I’ve been taking a long time getting my homework done. With my house chores and homework, I have very little time to do other activities and get mind off school of a few. My chores aren’t really the problem it’ the homework. Sometimes I’ll spend like three hours doing homework and sometimes I won’t have time to my other personal things. Right now I’m trying
First of all , you already have 7 hours of school a day and even if you have recess and lunch as nice long break of an hour or two, guess what, that’s still five or six hours in class! don't believe me? Want another reason? Instead of dealing with so much homework go up to your teacher and tell them what you’re having trouble with and ask them for help. Here's some proof that you’re still in school
In Texas, a young 2nd grade teacher named Brandy Young decides that homework is blocking children to activities that they actually enjoy. Children should instead focus on things they like. The only homework she gives is schoolwork not done during class. She says children should go to bed early or have a family dinner or something. I think this is a good idea because I do not enjoy homework. I think it keeps me from doing anything I like and often times keeps me awake because I have to do it. I really hate homework and think it is absolutely useless. Research has shown that students being allowed to read any books they want improves your brain smarts. It’s
You just got to your math class, five minutes to spare. You get out your math book, and start to do the assignment due today. Waiting till the last minute to do something can be a real problem. Not only could you not finish it, but if you did, it might be done poorly. Doing something hastily can result in it being done poorly and done very sloppy. For me it usually isn't this serious, but, none the less, it can stress me out. It can mess with your grades causing more stress, and putting it off wastes precious time. I have a way to fix this. If you set a specific time and place to do work, after a while it will become routine and you would know when it is time. If I was to do this, I know it would help me and my grades.
That great journey that kids are forced to take every morning is to a place called school. School is meant to be helpful, informational, and beneficial, but does the complete opposite. Teachers are lying to kids and feeding them false information that won't help them when they are old enough to be on their own. This type of education will only be the result of less than smart adults, false priorities and simply just a waste of time for teachers and students. Teachers are teaching based on the thousands of test they will give and won't matter years from now. This false sense of teaching only helps the administrator's pockets grow fat from the growth of student enrollment. School should expand what they teach to information that will be useful, but since this won't happen until a billion years students will be better off dropping out before their
School is one of the conflicts I have in my life. I’m in seventh grade, and the work is slowly getting harder. I have had homework that has been kind of tough to finish. Sometimes I choose to procrastinate, instead of doing my work. Even though I choose to procrastinate I still get my work done.
Homework is always something I can “do later” or “finish at lunch”, and those things are true, but even though I CAN leave it until the last minute doesn’t mean I should. Things like procrastination are holding me back and keeping me from reaching my full potential. I have realized over and over again that things won't be handed to me as I become an adult but I tend to lose sight of that realization and go back to my old habits within hours. My goals shouldn’t simply be to get things done, but to work my hardest and build off my achievements.
The worst teacher I have ever had was my second-grade teacher, Mrs. Mark. There are several reasons why she was the worst teacher I have ever had. When I was younger I really struggled with school. I loved to go to school but I had a hard time grasping certain subjects. Unknown to me at the time I had a learning disability. I was later diagnosed with short-term memory problems, visual-motor integration and processing deficits (something to do with my neural pathways not connecting properly). I often would see words backward or the letters would get jumbled up but I did not realize this was my problem. Mrs. Mark just believed I was dumb. She really felt like I was a burden and I could not learn. She often would blow off the questions I have even if they valid. She even told my parents that she would just pass me, even though I was failing because there is no possible way I could understand any of these subjects. Even though this teacher gave up on me my parents did not.
Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps them because they practice and remember the material. A question that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it’s definition, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that
