Homecoming
Students strut through the hall looking as if they are from another planet. A sea of bright blue flood the Wilke. Ear-piercing cheers rattle the bleachers. Homecoming week is among the most memorable times of high school. Students are able step out of their comfort zone; whether that is by dressing in flamboyant costumes, or meeting new people during Edgewood in the Community. No matter which event is your favorite, homecoming week is an enjoyable and memorable time for all. The week starts off with its annual homecoming week mass. As students and faculty gather, the gym feels as if it is bursting at the seams with excitement to finally start the festivities. Seniors involved in powderpuff were so excited to begin the week, that they arrived at school before the sun rose. Shoes were soaked with dew, and shirts were dripping with sweat as the battle for the championship continued. Braids, bows, and bruises can best describe the competitive flag-football league. As the sun slowly filled the sky with its warm rays, students filtered into school wearing their best rodeo-attire. Cowboy boots clunked down the stairs, country music blasted outside of classrooms, and plaid shirts were sported by almost everyone. During lunch mods, students were entertained with sign painting. An overwhelming number of people gathered around a table with art supplies, almost as if they were thirsty animals at a watering hole. Orange, green, purple, and blue paint cascaded over the
Australians are known for their bravery and mateship. Defending our country at war is a significant part of the Australian identity. Donald Bruce Dawe who was a soldier during the Vietnam War has written about the horrors that these soldiers faced in his poem “Homecoming”. Jeff Cook’s “Grandpa what did you do in the war?” also highlights the struggles associated with being involved in war. This piece was written for the soldiers who returned home and the ones that lost their lives fighting for Australia.
When I arrived here at college I was extremely disappointed with the selection of food here in the cafeteria. I frequently found myself eating only hamburgers and pizza over and over again, simply because I did not like the other choices. About four months into the school year I had do go to the doctor for a virus and when the nurse weighed me I was a little surprised by what I saw. I had gained a little over ten pounds, close enough to what some refer to as the “Freshman 15.” It is a common fear among college students that they are going to gain fifteen pounds during the course of adjusting to college life. However experts have stated that the idea of the so called “Freshman 15,” is not that accurate. Every college student is obviously
All I want, and all I have ever wanted, is for people to view me as a leader. Someone you can come to for advice when needed, or one of my best qualities, to make people laugh when they are feeling down on themselves. In September of this year, 2017, I was chosen as one of the candidates for Homecoming King. In October, I was chosen to be the Homecoming King. I could not have been more honored to be a representation of my school. A teacher had seen me working as a student helper in the main office, and just had to tell me, “Kurt, congratulations,” I replied with a gracious thank you. She then went further to tell me, “ It is so nice when good things happen to good people,” replying again with a compassionate thank you. Then, it had become apparent
Monuments such as the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and San Vitale in Ravenna, perform a great importance in Byzantine and Islamic architecture. Both of these structures did not exclusively represent the main place of worship, but most importantly as a symbol of achievement and growth within the current times of construction. Starting in 524, under the influence of Orthodox bishop Ecclesius, the development of San Vitale was to represent the achievements of the emperor Justinian. Julius Argentarius was the sponsor for this structure and it was dedicated by Bishop Maximian in 547. The Dome of the Rock is built on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in 692 with the help of Abd al-Malik with the suspected intention to symbolize Islams influence in
Similar to absurdist theatre black comedy utilises black humour to ‘make light’ of themes that are generally considered as taboo or otherwise serious subjects that are predominantly confronting ideologies which are utilised to bring to the fore issues within society. Martin McDonagh’s play ‘Lieutenant of Inishmore’ uses of black comedy to reflect the social-political milieu of his time and expound the ‘troubles’ Ireland faced with death, loss, and human experiences of pain. While McDonagh explores political issues Harold Pinter’s play ‘The Homecoming’ brings to the fore the contentious societal issues of sexism within his 1960’s context by using uncomfortable humour to explore his characters controversial nature of the treatment of women and
For Hillsborough Community College to attract the most students and achieve higher retention rates, Differentiated Marketing would be the best practice. Because Hillsborough Community College is predominantly diverse, target marketing groups should include dual-enrolled students, recent high-school graduates, young adults, and career-oriented adults seeking higher education. A smaller marketing group to consider is the mature adult over the age of 60 who are seeking recreational classes. Promotional messages should be developed to target each group in order to increase attraction and retention in each group category. The main marketing focus of HCC has been on the high school market, and not in actively recruiting the adult market (Clarus 16). Though the high school market may always display a greater percentage of students attending HCC, other marketing groups may show an improved interest if promotional messages are targeted to each group, thus increasing overall attendance.
Connie is like most young women these days. She has an idea of what to do for career just has not yet put enough thought into it to feel good about a decision. Connie is a smart seventeen year old young woman. Her mother is struggling to provide for Connie as a single mother working two jobs and only wants the best for Connie. Her mother is often quoted as saying, “I don’t want Connie to make the mistakes I have.”
As today’s controversy surrounding Confederate memory grows, it begins to include not just the popular monuments to the Confederacy such as Stone Mountain, and monuments to General Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Nathan Forrest. Now even lesser memorials such as Silent Sam have also come under attack from civil rights activists lately. Silent Sam has stood on the University of North Carolina’s main campus in Chapel Hill for over 100 years. In that time there have only been a few times in which Sam has been the object of criticism.
Being nominated for Michigan Junior Honor Society is a big deal and accomplishment for me. I really value education and I feel that this will really help me with my education and in being a better person. As my teachers did, I believe I would be a good student for MJHS. I do all sorts of activities in and out of school and in the past I’ve done many things to give back to the community.
Homecoming Queen is the third installment of the Carter House girl series and a major developing point in the series. As a result, the book contained many key moments or events that all led up to the end of this story and set up the next one, therefore causing me to write an extra-long summary. The story follows main character DJ and the rest of the Carter House girls. Previously, in Stealing Bradford, Taylor disappeared at the end of the story. Taylor’s disappearing act followed a Myspace incident involving scandalous pictures of her, leaked by an unknown person. Homecoming Queen begins with Taylor returning home after the police and townspeople, including the girls have worried about and searched for her for weeks.
“We basically do most of everything during Homecoming week, It's a really fun group there's energy in the room when they get pretty pumped up we sometimes,” Aaron Rudebusch, student council adviser, said.
Throughout the novel “Homecoming,” the effects of the slave trade on the characters are explored. For example, Quey, the son of Effia, feels the pressure of carrying on his father’s slave industry in the midst of struggling with his identities. According to Quey, “he was one of the half-caste children of the Castle, and, like the other half-caste children, he could not fully claim either half of himself, neither his father’s whiteness nor his mother’s blackness. Neither England nor the Gold coast” (Gyasi 55). Quey makes it clear that he struggles to find his place in the world because he could never put an identity on himself. When asked to accept a position in his mother’s village, Quey was not enthusiastic about it because he had
I feel that homecoming shouldn’t be abolished. Abolishing homecoming would be upsetting to students and former students. The reasons I feel this way is because homecoming could be so much fun, you also get to know more about your school and learning their traditions of the school.
The world of sports has grown larger than life over the past century, especially in college. Being a collegiate athlete is, without question, the hardest athletic profession in the world. Not only are students devoted to their sport, which requires an obscene amount of time of preparation, but they are also devoted to their school work. And the award they receive for their hard work? Of course there are the great memories, friendships made, “free education”, or national championships, but are theses students receiving their fair share? Should college athletes be paid? It is a question that has been asked, but never truly answered. College athletes should be paid for their work. I even have the perfect system to see
Tony finished getting ready, and then we left for the high school. The parking lot was filled with all the other seniors’ cars. Tony and I walked into the library ten minutes late like usual, and the principal had already started giving instructions. I found my place in line and then was all ears. I couldn’t help but look around at all the others. Smiles were plastered on their faces as if they had heard a hilarious joke. Once the principal concluded his speech, the whole senior class paraded down the hallway to the commons in two uniform lines stopping just outside the gymnasium doors. We could hear the band warming up and playing songs. All the people that were standing around me were bubbling
