For years flocks of children have gotten up at the crack of dawn and gone to the brick building to sit at their desks for eight hours straight, but now a very effective style of school called homeschooling has emerged. Most of todays parents have gone to a public school because homeschooling was not very well known back when they were school aged. Since then, homeschooling has become much more popular and has been proven to be effective. Parents should consider homeschooling their kids as an alternative to sending them to a public school.

Home schooling is a very controversial subject among many people. Some parents say that they would love to home school their children if they had the time, while other parents say that they would never home school because home schooled children lack socialization skills. There are many statistics that support that homeschooled children do just as well with their education and socialization as public schooled children do. Home schooling your children definitely requires a great deal of time and patience, but if you are willing to try it out it could be very beneficial to your child’s education and the relationship you have with your child. When public and home schooling are compared there are many benefits to each, but home schooling is more flexible with your time and your child can get a personalized education just for their needs.

B. Preview – Traditional homeschooling can be problematic to a student’s life skills and overall development. The social learning aspect of school, which is lacking in homeschool, directly transfers into college and the workplace. Most teenagers and kids need to be supervised at every moment or else they will not do their work and, while at home, it is hard to find the motivation to do schoolwork.

Students that attend home school are less likely to be stressed out because of school work, and less likely to be a victim of peer pressure.

Public school is easier to get involved in, and is the better option for those purusing careers in sports, while homeschooling provides recreational-level sports and clubs, but they might only be available at a distance. Homeschooling has a more tailored education style and the flexible hours encourages the desire to learn and to pursue personal interests, where other students have to conform to the cookie-cutter class style of a public school. While family is the center of the homeschool system, parents are almost left out of public schools entirely, unless in the event of misconduct. Lastly, homeschooling requires purchasing textbooks and sometimes paying tuition, while simultaineously paying for other children to be educated through taxes. Before presenting both the positive and the negative aspects of homeschooling it is worth mentioning that the deciding factor for parents choosing to homeschool as opposed to public schooling generally falls into a biased opinion of public schooling. As mentioned in an NPR radio interview, “the number one reason parents give is the desire to provide religious or moral instruction and that the second most popular reason, closely followed behind, was a concern about the school environment” Martin, M. On the other hand, there are no requirements stating that parents doing home schooling have to be trained, experienced, certified or evaluated; or have any particular qualifications, parents who have graduated high school can home school their child. Home schooled parents argue that they can invest more time and energy into their child’s education, but in reality, a parent can educate their children at home with just a high school degree. Their inexperience harms the child more than their attempt to help. As well as educated teachers, public schools also provide a development of adapting to a more diverse environment and instill a stimulation to learn.

For the first 230 years of our history, parents, not the government, were in charge. Competence in reading, writing, and arithmetic was nearly universal at the time of the American Revolution. But by the mid-nineteenth century, a band of reformers led by Horace Mann of Massachusetts replaced our founding, free-market education system with a system of state-run education, with compulsory attendance and standardized curriculum. Many pioneers have fought for homeschooling, and new ones continue to surface. While the public education continues to downplay homeschooling, home educators continue to flourish in many ways by performing academically and becoming professionals in their field of study. The reasons parents chose to homeschool for religious reasons, low standard in public schools, academic advancement, and a safer environment. From my own experience with homeschooling, its beneficial for a variety of reasons. One reason would be one on one teaching according to the child’s learning style. When you compare this method to the public sector, children are receiving constant tutorial help from their parents. In the other hand parents who choose to home school their kids are faced with a great deal of advantages. Home schooling a child means that a parent has to give 100 percent dedication into teaching there child. One great asset to home schooling is that children are often way ahead in their grade work as compared with their peers in public school. They learn to read much earlier and advance through their subjects much faster and in a more thorough manner, due to more individualized attention and subject-specific attention. By being taught at home, the student has immediate access to the "teacher", and can ask questions at just about any time without having to worry about other students and their learning habits. Most parents hear the word “home-school” and conjure up many assumptions that are either false or overlooked at. The technology provided, as well as the teaching quality spent on home-schooled children requires a lot of time and effort from the parents; it is an act of dedication and total commitment. Some people say that being home schooled is not as beneficial as public school. However, I feel that being home schooled is more beneficial. Even though some may argue that the child loses social contact and socialization skills not everyone can learn in a large social setting. I think learning in a setting where you get more one on one contact is more beneficial. Second, there are less distractions when your learning at home. Also, everyone learns differently and your learning coach can teach you in a way you can understand.
