Simple Truth and Social Compromise in the Catcher In The Rye

Do people change from their experiences in life? In the book The Catcher In The Rye , by J.D Salinger, Holden's character changes throughout the book. Going from what Holden was like on the first few pages to what he is now like towards the end of the book, Holden makes drastic positive changes to his character throughout numerous situations he encounters in the book. He fixes himself a responsible persona because of his responses towards these encounters. Examples of such changes in Holden’s maturity throughout the novel include how he stays in the rain instead of going on the carousel, getting or agreeing to seek treatment for his condition in the end, and how he reacted to the …show more content…

These thoughts, paired with his actions, reveal that he is not emotionally sound. Holden lacks self-control and often acts impulsively. He is also a terrible liar, lying freely and often for no reason at all. This tendency among others results in a void of healthy relationships in his life. Holden Caulfield consistently demonstrates a severe lack of control over his actions, through how he reacted to his brothers death (Overwhelmed with emotion, Holden punches out all the windows in the garage, and says he wanted to do the same to the car. He claims that it was “just for the hell of it” (39). But not only is this shown in this circumstance, it also springs up in his day to day life, such as in his relationship and interactions with Stradlater(“I tried to sock him, with all my might, right smack in the toothbrush, so it would split his goddam throat open” (43). This is a very sudden mood swing, because he had previously referred to Stradlater as “a pretty friendly guy” (26). His reaction to that makes me think that he cares about the other younger kids in the school, because he says so(Holden imagines a "pervert bum" sneaking into Phoebe's school at night to write the message on the wall (202). He thinks that by seeing it, Phoebe and her mates will be robbed of their innocence, but he doesn’t rub it off because he says if he’d have a hundred years he couldn’t wipe off half the “Fuck You” signs in the world.
