The Lewis and Clark expedition, or Corps of Discovery, began with the Louisiana Purchase. After the Louisiana Territory was in the possession of the United States, President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on a trip west to learn more about the new area. The goals of the expedition were to study the Native Americans living in the area as well as the plants, animals, and land of the region. Most importantly, Jefferson wanted the expedition to find out if there was a river that connected the Pacific Ocean to the eastern states. The Corps of Discovery set out on their mission in May 1804 and traveled up the Missouri River.

Sacagawea was part of an American Indian tribe called “Shoshone”. When she was only 12 years old, she was kidnapped by the Hidatsa tribe and brought to their camp. The Hidatsa Indians sold her as a slave to a fur trader by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau. They got married to each other and gave birth to her son, Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau. Just when she gave birth to him, Lewis and Clark arrived to their area. Lewis and Clark saw how Sacagawea and her husband would be valuable to the expedition so they were added to the crew. She provided the crew with a steady food supply, medicine, and horses. Sacagawea was also a translator if they ever came across other tribes. When the ship crashed, she helped recover some other valuable items

Two men were chosen to explore the new territory; Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They started the expedition in May, 1804 to September, 1806. Jefferson had sent out the expedition to find a new route to the Pacific Ocean, and establish a colony on the west before Britain, or another country claimed it. Of course, the secondary objectives were scientific studies, and economics. Lewis and Clark were not the only men on the expedition, they were just the leaders. They had 40 other men, French, Americans, and one African-American all on the expedition with them.

As you are walking up the Jefferson Fork, you notice that Sacagawea is weak and ill. To the point where she can't move, and can't bare to walk. Your men say that she is holding up the expedition, and that they can go on without her. You , your men, Clark, sacagawea, her infant son, and your slave York, have to either decide to save her, or leave her and continue the expedition.

Thomas Jefferson original goal for the expedition was to find a waterway that connects the Mississippi river and the port of New Orleans to the Pacific ocean so that America could trade with the far east. Lewis and clark were able to make it to the Pacific ocean, just not by boat. They had to travel through the Rocky Mountains by foot then build new boats. But on the other hand Thomas Jefferson had just made the Louisiana purchase and the area needed to be explored. Luis and Clark did accomplish this goal when they made it to the Pacific and created the first map of the area.

Some information over Lewis and Clark's expedition, is that it was the first American expedition to travel the western part of the United States. Around 1803, after the Louisiana purchase, a captain and his friend were commissioned to explore the United States's untouched by white man's land. They had to keep journals and records of the things that they discovered and how to land was. Their goal was to say that the Americans have been there before the Britain and European powers attempted to claim the land.

Sacagawea, also known as Bird woman, was the daughter of a Shoshone chief(“A Fine Boy”). Sacagawea’s tribe, the Shoshone, was a very poor tribe(Patrick, Mcgrath). She was born in either 1788 or in 1789(Patrick, Mcgrath). Sacagawea was captured by the Hidatsa Indians at the young age of 12 and she was also raised by them(“A Fine Boy”). Because she was the daughter of an Indian tribe, she made the expedition a success and was able to accompany Lewis and Clark on their return back to their own country(Fisher,Doris,pg 14). The expedition may not have been a success without the courage and the knowledge of Sacagawea(Kelly, Stephanie,p 9).

Sacagawea was one of the two native Americans that went on the Lewis and Clark expedition. Sacagawea was 16 when she went on the expedition. She was only 20 when she died so she didn’t live that long. Imagine how early that would be today! Sacagawea has many nicknames such as Jamie and Julia. Sacagawea was kidnapped at age twelve by the Hidatsa Indians along with some other women, she must have been very scared. On the trip she had a son named Jean Baptiste Charbonneau when she was 16, he was born on February 11 in 1805. Lewis helped with the delivery of Jean. One way that this affected the trip is it shows that the travelers came in peace. Jean was like a big sign that said: We don’t want to fight! Sacagawea’s husband is Toussaint Charbonneau.

For nearly two hundred years, Americans were stuck living between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. However, after the Americans won the Revolution and disbanded most of the Indians a sizeable white westward migration began. During the 1800s there were a variety of famous expeditions. This led to the expansion of what is now the United States. During these expeditions, many of the explorers wrote about their experience in the unknown territory. The danger they face was overbearing and almost cost them and their crew their lives.

In 1800 Thomas Jefferson was elected president. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Jefferson had the vision of the United States growing from sea to sea. However, it was unknown what was out there. Jefferson planned an exploratory expedition and called upon Meriwether Lewis to lead it. Jefferson was very interested in what was in the west lands. Much was involved in the carrying out of this expedition; the preparations for this trip, what happened during their long journey west, and the return home. This expedition was very important in the development of the United States.
