History and literature may seem like two completely different things, but in reality, are interconnected in every way. Although one is information about the past and the other is information about any topic, something that is not often realized is, that history is literature. From poems to plays, short stories to novels, an element of history is always present. The authors of the following pieces wrote each literature with past events in mind, making it more true, more effective, and most importantly, more connected.
Short stories are famous for telling historical stories. One example would be Saki’s, ”The Interlopers” This short story is about two men, Ulrich and Georg, who are enemies due to a family feud, and are caught in a situation where they must help each other or else the wolves would come and eat them (Saki). The relationship between history and this passage is that this story was written before 1919, which was when World War 1 was occuring. This story reflects the experiences of a soldier during that historical time period, because of the way the story has multiple “sides” to it. In a war, there are usually two sides fighting against each other, and have their

One example is the article, “The Joy of Jury Duty”, by Andrew Guthrie Ferguson. The article, “The Joy of Jury Duty.” is about the different reasons on why it is necessary to go to jury duty. The article says that going to jury duty protects and practices our constitutional rights (Ferguson). This is related to history because juries have been used throughout the years to bring justice to the innocent, and help find who is guilty. The author shows why jury duty is important, by connecting it back to the constitution. This also relates to history, because jury duty has been a part of the American democracy for a while now, and the article shows why jury duty is not only a right, but also a
Also it promotes civic virtue and an opportunity for democratic selfgovernment. Document C Analysis • 4. By serving on a jury • 5. This document argues strongly for the civic and democratic values of juries and jury service. The jury system benefits those who serve, those whose cases appear before it, and democracy itself.
In the book, Twelve Angry Men, by Reginald Rose, the reader gets a demonstration of the jury system, with all its flaws and its positives. In this informal essay, I will show some of the positives and negatives of the jury system. After this analysis, you will see that the jury system is flawed, due to people like Juror 7. Juror 7’s attitude and beliefs are a prime example of how the jury system can have negative consequences.
Additionally, courts should cross-reference statistics of groups in the community compared to who is chosen by the jury. Furthermore, the long hours and low pay of jury duty limits some people from attending. The graph, “Younger people are less likely to see jury duty as a part of good citizenship” given by the Pew Research Center showcases this issue (Outside source). The
Today we are here to speak upon todays Jury system and how it can be improved or should we have it removed. Well I'm here to tell you my side. I think jury duty at this point should be eliminated and done for because its has more convicted, its random people you can say with no experience on handling a situation like this with a “criminal” they don't know how to assess the situation at hand like if you were to go with the bench, and also some of the jurors don't even pay attention to the case they are there because they have to. In the jury system there has been more cases than in the bench for the year 2010.
Author Seymour Wishman has a well-regarded background in the law system as he has practiced criminal law for both the defense and the prosecution during his career. Wishman’s purpose for writing this book is to educate the average American about the process of the jury system. Wishman also makes it a point show the average American the perception of being in a jury and how they perceive others. Many Americans have minimal knowledge of the United States legal system. Wishman seeks to educate the average American of how a jury works, what it is like to be in a jury, and more about the United States legal system.
Civil Juries are one of the quintessential building blocks of American democracy. The law being put into the hands of the people is a monumental concept that gives Americans the choice to actively participate in their government. On paper, jury duty is an ideal way to have your voice heard and contribute to your community. In Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men, the reality of jury duty is shown. Nearly every juror is portrayed as impatient to get out of the courthouse to do anything other than jury duty.
This will help my writing by encouraging me to incorporate facts where they seamlessly fit in the text, as opposed to placing historical elements in careless, literary locations that create a lackluster reading experience. By continuing to read texts from the historical fiction genre, an aspiring (as well as current) writer can monitor the various ways historical research affects a piece, whether it be in a positive or negative
I slowly started transitioning from fixed mindset to growth mindset by “finding lessons and inspiration in the success of others.” (Dweck). I found my inspiration of him playing amazing music on a violin so I took his success and used it as a guide for me to get better at the violin. So I started using practicing tips that the senior gave me such as start slow when playing, always play scales, and good bow methods.
History contains an ample amount of information, with a lot of incredible stories. The short stories The Yellow Wallpaper by Charolette Gilman and A Pair Of Tickets by Amy Tan both have an important historical context, that plays a role in the stories. Both stories have relationships to problems of the by gone eras. The historical perspective in the stories helps to reveal aspects of the protagonist characters. The setting acts like a character Itself in both short stories.
History plays an important part in shaping the lives of people and the literary works they produce. While not readily apparent, history can influence stories and their messages; it plays a pivotal role in how the authors write in their stories because events in real life affect how people think during a certain time period. Authors, like Edgar Allan Poe, used events that happened during his time to write some of his stories, and “The Raven” shows how well Edgar Allan Poe writes, which got him literary fame (Mays 107-108). William Faulkner used the events that happened around him in his stories and would later receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950 (298-299). Amy Tan, who wrote The Joy Luck Club, also uses history in her story. Stories
Seeking a career in legal services demands knowledge of legal processes. However, this is not to imply that legal education is any less beneficial to the average citizen. In fact, considering that the court devotes a great time to enlightening jurors to the law, demonstrates the vitality of a common person’s familiarity of the law. A jury member is an average citizen and is referred to as the “soul of fact finding” emphasizing this importance. Fact finding is the integration of morality and legality principles used to arrive at a reasonable interpretation of evidence presented to determine a defendants guilt. Morality in this aspect of the court process is relevant, as it allows members of the community to actively contribute their values to the flexibility of the law. Therefore, it is constitutionally required of the court to inform the jury of the fundamental legal principles in order to effectively assess evidence. Otherwise, with jurors lack of legal knowledge, due process is jeopardized.
This question has left a question in many people’s minds. Does the jury system have the importance we invest into it? The jury is considered as a vital part of the UK law system, the jury system is a gathering of 12 people who sit in civil and criminal trials and make decision with the information collected. The jury system has an approximate 800 years of history. Early jurors in England had different roles compared to the jury system in the 21st century, their position was to act as witnesses which provided reports of local associations which was also called dark ages. However, the role of the jury today is to know as little knowledge about the case before the trial. The Juries
Failure to at least reply with a reason why they did not show up could lead to an eventual citation and even arrest. Thus, when most people see a jury duty notice for the first or second time, they try to handle it before they get into trouble. Jury duty is handled with strict laws and it is thus an effective method of engaging with most citizens. If the United States would handle the voting process in the same way that jury duty is handled, I believe that the voter turnout would highly increase. I would support the United States making a law that would make the voting process more demanding on citizens.
Jury duty is lampooned frequently in the popular culture as being a dreadfully boring waste of time and energy that keeps us all away from the more important things in life such as family, work, and getting drunk. Indeed, most of the time, juries see cases that are often dull and certain. Unfortunately, not all cases can be high profile, riveting murder cases that Nancy Grace can shrill on and on about for months on end. Perhaps worst of all, it is something that we are forced to do, and Americans tend to not like being forced to do things. However, there is no better way to grant impartiality to criminal procedures than the jury system. The jury system allows us, the average American, to have our say in the criminal justice process in perhaps the most important role: we can determine whether or not a person is guilty of a crime and we can do so uninhibited by our own personal biases, the biases of judges, and the biases of the federal government.
Serving on a jury is a civic duty and an American tradition. However, some people view jury duty as a chore or as an event that negatively interrupts their lives. Some independent studies have shown that even jury duty has a devastating effect on married life. Due to this and other extraneous situations, there are only a few people who actually want to serve on a jury. This may lead to efforts by potential jurors to, in some way get out of their duty in a jury. What we know of as the current jury duty system should be changed so citizens are not forced to serve in this capacity and can still be regarded as a responsible civilian. As per the status quo, a trial jury is a constitutional right, a jury of ones peers or equals. However,
