The Bombs were not as bad as people think it was. President Harry S. Truman had already warned that any attempt to invade japan would cause unusual acts that would bring the war to a brief end. Roughly about 90,000-146,000 people were killed in Hiroshima & 39,000-80,000 in Nagasaki, which most of the death occurred on the very first day of the bombings. The Army Officer made it seem like that was the only choice was the bomb but it really wasn’t.
Atomic bombs are so powerful that it immediately causes a widespread killing of the people close to the explosion. The aftermath of the explosions are horrific to where there were bodies floating down the stream (Document F). “The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in out war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender” (Document B). This means that the Japanese thought these weapons were exceedingly brutal and would wipe out everything, so they weren’t in favor of the bombs. They were already defeated from the power of these bombs and they couldn’t do anything after the explosions, and this was just not necessary. After the attacks, Hiroshima was no longer a city but a burned-over prairie. To the east and west everything was flattened (Document D). Entire cities were wiped out and this caused shock and sadness to approach into
According to the “Atomic Bomb” slideshow, slide 26, around 200,000 people were brutally killed as a result of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This started when America disagreed with Japan’s cruel actions during the Rape of Nanking, which led them to impose a ban on trade with Japan. This triggered Japan to bomb Pearl Harbor by surprise on December 7th, 1941. America wanted revenge, which caused them to begin island-hopping, bombing Japan with non-atomic bombs, and cutting off Japan’s access to outside resources and supplies; however, Japan continued to fight back. Both sides had been at war against one another with high mortality rates for around 4 years with no end in sight.
The United States decision to release the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a way to terrorize the Soviet Union. The United States terrorized the Soviet Union by revealing what they were capable of doing during war. Also, the United States wanted to posture the power they had obtained throughout time.
Explain in what ways the bombing raid on Hiroshima on August 6th 1945 was significant and different (cause) from previous bombing raids on the city? Explain why did the people of the city come out of their shelters to watch the bomb descend (effect)?
Dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified under the information they had at the time. When criticizing the actions of the Truman administration one needs to consider the effect of knowledge in hindsight. Truman was working under the knowledge that dropping the nuclear bombs would bring a short and fast victory to the Pacific front of the Second World War. As the war had already ended in Europe by this time, leaders were looking to end the campaign in the Pacific as quickly as possible. From a cost benefit perspective dropping the bombs on Japan meant that very few American lives were lost, and the cost of building the bombs compared to the cost of a minimum six month continuation of fighting.Additionally, there was no testing
The United States made the right decision to bomb the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. President Truman, felt that is was evident that the other alternatives where the Allied forces thought of invading Japan could have led to a lot of casualties on their part (Roark 685). Another reason can be because it is the same Japan that agitated America to join the Second World War, which it had initially avoided, by bombing the Pearl Harbor (Riggs 3). Apparently, this grudge was carried forward.
This was the time when the United States and the Japanese had an extreme rivalry between each other. After the Japanese attacked a US territory, killing 2,403 people, the US promptly declared war on Japan, entering themselves into a second world war after being significantly provoked. Germany and Italy declared war on the US after the US declared war on Japan. Later on, after defeating Germany, the USSR agreed to help the US defeat Japan ninety days after the Nazi surrender, so the US had a six month period before the USSR could come and help them defeat Japan. The US did not want to give up any territory to the USSR like they did with Europe, so the US had to attempt to end the war themselves prior to the ninety days. To end the war between the US and Japan prior to the agreed date by the USSR, J. Robert Oppenheimer invented something that would later murder 105,000 people and injure 94,000 more.
In World War II, Japan has been one of the biggest threat to the Allies. As the war goes on, the atomic bomb has been discovered and the U.S decided to bomb it surprisingly in Hiroshima, Japan, that had been one of Japan’s largest cities during late 1600’s. It became a horrible situation to the people who got bomb on August 6, 1945. America stated that they have a lot of reasons on why did they dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, like to save more of their people and lessen their casualties, to make Japan surrender as quickly as possible and according to President Truman, the main reason of it was to end World War II. Others were not convinced with their reasons and said that the bomb has been dropped on Hiroshima because America wanted to see how
I believe that the bombing of Hiroshima was not a diplomatic measure calculated to intimidate the Soviet Union in the post Second-World War era rather than a strictly military measure designated to force Japan’s unconditional surrender. I don’t believe it is in America’s nature to not only bomb a city, but to completely level it, just to intimidate an entirely different country. America’s goal was the total and utter surrender of Japan. Not to intimidate Soviet Union.
The bombing on Hiroshima was a major event in our history during the 1940’s. It was dropped by the United States on a supposed “small military base”, as a way to put an end to WWII, but it ended up affecting more than a “small military base”. The end of war did not justify the means of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima since Japan was already weakened, easy to defeat, and innocent children and women ended up dying as well. Although others may say it did its job in stopping war, war could have been stopped with a simple blockade as an alternative. Japan was already weak enough for it to be defeated by the United States with no need for an atomic bomb.
The atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki (“Little Boy and “Fat Man”) killed a total of roughly 100-110 thousand people. There were more deaths than needed. The U.S. did not inform Japan of the bombing so that the women and children could escape. The U.S. should not have used atomic bombs against Japan to end World War II.
In the midst of World War II, August 1945, the United States unleashed the first ever atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The usage of the atomic bomb was effective, but at the same time devastating and unnecessary. The United States should not have dropped the atomic bomb because it maimed countless of Japanese civilians, caused radiation poisoning whose effects impacted future generations, left both cities in ruins, left citizens homeless, and it was absolutely unmoral for the United States to have created such havoc and chaos in these two cities. Being there on the day Hiroshima was struck by the atomic bomb, junior high student,
Hiroshima was such an ideal target for American bombing. According to the book, this was because the city was considered an important place for establishing a military command center. Another reason was that it was a place where communication would be coordinated from. It was the perfect city for militaries to station their operations in.
On august sixth in 1945, a fifteen kiloton atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It was detonated one thousand, eight hundred feet over the ground. The plane that dropped the bomb was the Enola Gay, which is now at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. The same thing happened on August ninth over Nagasaki. seventy thousand people died due to this bomb. The effects of the atomic bomb are thermal and nuclear radiation. Radiation affects the skin and cell reproduction and can cause cancer. People in the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima experienced both long-term and short-term effects from the radiation. Though the bombing of Hiroshima brought the immediate end of World War Two, the use of the atomic bomb had grave effects on the people and
Though Hiroshima 's bombing was a terrible disaster, it undoubtedly brought the Japanese community together. The terror was undeniable, yet through the destruction people sacrificed themselves to save others. In the novel Hiroshima, written by John Hersey, even though many of the main characters are injured, they still stop to help others. The acknowledgement of others pain and suffering and developing empathy and sympathy for them, having the strength to give up your desires for a moment, having respect for yourself and others are qualities of humans that compel them to help others even if there is nothing to gain. It is only when we put faith in ourselves and others that we truly help others.
