“Don't let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.¨ - Dalai Lama. Hippies represent the counterculture of the 1960ś. Their lifestyle includes rock music, long flowy hair clothing, and hallucinogenic drugs. To most people they were seen as a disgrace and dirty to society, but to many they are a reminder of peace. Some questions that people wonder are who,what ,and why? The hippies of the 1960´s were the teenagers of the baby boomer generation, Many of them were caucasian and middle class between the ages of 15-25. The reasoning behind this? They were tired of harsh restrictions from not only the government but their parents. Hippies didn't care about things most people did; they didn't care about money and worked as little as possible. …show more content…

To heighten their experiences physically, mentally and spiritually the hippies used hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD. Many authorities felt threatened by the culture; they were thrown off with their radical ideas and saw them as a danger to the society because of the fact that hippies were against violence, war and many other political views. The offset that caused the baby boomer generation to create a culture was the Vietnam War. These young kids were upset because their older brothers and sisters were being drafted into the war and killed. They were hoping that they would make an impact by bringing peace and harmony at a harsh time. Uniting and bringing people together was one of their biggest goals. The hippies wanted to impact the world or at least try. At this time the biggest problem the hippies had was that Americans were forced to to fight in war against their morals. Martin Luther King JR helped opened people’s minds to also set off the hippie movement because he inspired people to stand up for what they believed in and to speak their mind. In conclusion, this movement changed many political views and basic life views also. They were the rebels, the different ones, and the ones who wanted to make a difference in our world.
