High School Shooting Research Paper

The Thurston High School shooting took place on May 21, 1998 by Kipland Kinkel at the age of 15. He killed many during the shooting, not knowing if what he did was clearly thought out. He grew up in a family that seemed to be very happy, but that was not how he was feeling inside when all he felt was sadness. He received weapons as a gift and hung around with people that had a bad influence on him. Even though he had a depressive disorder and knowing that his head wasn’t working right, it was not a good enough excuse for the crime that he committed.

Throughout history, crime has always plagued the world. People in positions of power and/or the government has tried to control these issues by implementing new policies and making new laws. Despite the attempts, many people in the world reject it, thereby, committing crimes. In the past, some crimes were not regarded as significant problems unlike, how they are perceived in this day-and-age. An example of this would be taking weapons on board an aircraft. In the past, it was still illegal to bring weapons on your flight, yet, people were not as anal about it. However, the debate on how we as a society deal with violent crime is also debatable, many would say that we need more prisons, law enforcement officers, or longer prison terms. On Tuesday morning, a 15 year old male student of Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky opened fire on his fellow students. At approximately 8 a.m. the teenager armed with a handgun began firing immediately; the school shooting left two dead and eighteen others injured before the suspect was apprehended by police at the school. The two individuals that died included Bailey Holt and Preston Cope. Holt died on the scene while Cope died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The students name has yet to be released due to the fact that he is a minor. The gun control debate has resurfaced with a vengeance in the wake of the shooting at a school in Florida that left 17 dead. Nikolas Cruz entered the freshmen building right before dismissal at around 2:19p.m. He was carrying an AR-15 in a case. Cruz shot students in teachers who were in the hallways and in classrooms on the first and second floors. Eventually, Cruz left his vest, magazines, and gun in a staircase and camouflaged himself among other fleeing students. After making it out of the school, Cruz walked to Walmart and bought a drink at the Subway there. He was apprehended walking down the street just a few miles from the school. He was arrested and taken to a hospital. Cruz was then released into police custody.

School shootings are a tragedy, it’s just about impossible to say it’s not. Children are one of our most valuable resources as they are the future of this country and this world and we put so much time and energy into them it would make sense to keep them safe. The thing I don’t understand is why we protect our president with guns, our congressmen with guns, celebrities with guns, sporting events with guns, jewelry stores with guns, and yet we protect our kids with a gun free zone sign. When I flash back to the deadly Valentine's Day shooting, I think about my immediate reaction after watching the live coverage for an hour.

Well this will be the last paper I write to you for Philosophy. For this letter I shall write to you about a social movement concerning a social problem in today's society, and by the time you read this hopefully the issue is resolved. One of the biggest social issues today is gun control, and the reason I am talking to you about this issue is because of the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. This is a huge issue because it repeatedly happens, yet nothing is done about it which is why I am passionate about this issue. I will remind you the details around the school shooting, and problems surrounding this issue. I will also talk about the non-violent resistance that is being used by the Parkland survivors to solve the problem. We know that people have a problem not only familiar but with friendships. We understand that people have different thoughts and that they get to do things that are not common. For example; murder, bullying and even having an attitude of mastery of the situation against the person. People who act aggressively are better off getting psychological help.
