High School Is Unfair

Students struggle throughout high school and go through a great deal of stress. Whether it be making friends, or working hard to pass a difficult class. To make things more pressuring, they are not allowed to wear what they want. The administration made the decision that it is best to suspend a student for their choice in clothing. If they go against the rule of dress code, there will be serious consequences. What students wear should not affect their class work. If a student gets sent home for their outfit, it is affecting their grades and attendance. Punishment disrupts the students education more than what they are wearing. High school students should feel free to embrace their individuality without being pressured by dress codes; therefore, it should be eliminated from all schools indefinitely.

We should have dress codes because some people feel insecure about their appearances. If we start wearing inappropriate school clothes, such as shorts and tank tops then some people may feel insecure. They may not feel good about how they look and this could cause serious behavior problems and interfere with school work and socializing.

Blankets are not allowed to be worn in school this year .They are not allowed to be worn in school because they are very distracting. Last year people wore them all the time. I like to wear warm jackets and coats because is not that bad and is not distracted for all.

If one young lady can wear shorts with a “four inch inseam” or a skirt “no more than three inches from the center of the kneecap” (Carroll High School Student Handbook 2010-2011 17) then why can’t the same girl wear a pair of jeans with a small hole in them below the kneecap? All eyes are turned towards the girl sporting the classy dress and no one even notices the small hole located in the shinbone area. The strict dress codes do teach the students to dress in a respectable manner that will be necessary in future job efforts, however high school students are not at work. A majority of students have jobs and comply to the job related dress code because they are being paid to do so however, they are not being paid at school and simply want to be able to express themselves while in the public eyes of their peers. The administration is exercising all of their power to prevent the wearing of what they believe to be as inappropriate clothes, when in reality it is not.

We have some concerns with the dress code. We think it should be updated. Girls are not allowed to wear athletic shorts anymore yet guys wear them everyday and people seem to not have a problem with that. We understand that we need limitations but it seems that like the dress code is mainly targeted towards girls. The dress code says that shorts need to be mid thigh but it doesn't state that we cannot wear athletic shorts at all. We understand that some athletic shorts are short for school but we don't think that it should be prohibited. The temperature is going up as the school year goes on, so girls are going to want to wear athletic shorts so we can be well situated in the school day and we could be more focused. The school administration people should change the rules about us not being able to wear tank tops and shorts, because it gets hot in Texas.

Why do we have a uniform code? Why do the students of St. John Neumann Catholic school have to wear a uniform if they don't like them or want to? Why does the problem exist? Why should the problem be solved? Well, the teachers/staff at SJNCS are forcing the students to follow guidelines such as, for boys: your hair must not touch the collar of your shirt. For girls: you must have a skirt with a dollar bill length from your knee. If you break these rules, there will often be silly and ridiculous consequences.

In the novel, Animal Farm, George Orwell mocks the Russian Revolution by using animals to represent Russian leaders and followers. The animals rebel against the humans after an inspirational speech by Old Major, the prized white boar. The setting of the story is on a farm in England in the 1940’s. The animals were being trapped on this farm so they can work for their drunken farmer. Napoleon is a very controlling and manipulative leader on the farm.

Hoodies are allowed in some schools but why not this one? HSC students grabbed their fedoras and baseball caps and hopped on bus to the Worthington Hooker school for a formal debate that may enable them to wear those hats more often The school district bans kids from wearing hats and hoodies in school except for medical and religious purpose

No leggings, no holes, no tank tops, no shorts, no hats, no nothing. That alone eliminates ⅔ of my wardrobe. These rules mostly apply to girls and frankly I find that unfair as do many other students. Why should girls and/or boys have to cover up and not be able to wear things that they would be perfectly fine wearing outside of school just so that others don't get “

Nowadays, we see many teenagers dress in spaghetti-strap tank tops, low-cut shirts, drop pants, pajamas, and even spandex shorts in school even though there have been policies about dress codes. Teachers, parents, and other adults feel disgruntled about the way they dress. Many students also complain about difficulties in concentrating on schoolwork because of the same reason. Obviously, what students wear to school has become a very distracting issue in the school environment. Therefore, school uniforms should be required in public schools due to many reasons.

High school is a vital time in a child’s life to discover who they are as an individual; expressing themselves through clothes is part of this process. If a student is required to wear a uniform everyday, that would create a lack of self expression. Uniforms have been around for centuries, from back in the day when women had to wear dresses or skirts and men had to wear pants. To now where students and employees have to wear certain pieces of clothing. People dress to express themselves, schools tell their students to be who they are and to be proud; however, when the student tries to do so they are sent home or held in the office which not only takes away their rights to express themselves, but takes them out of class. According to Friedrichs, “A shocking number of students are actually sent home or suspended for breaking dress code, which means even more time out of class.” A school's job is to prepare children for their futures, that can be quite hard when the student is not there to learn. Dress codes can be overwhelming to maintain. A student's wardrobe isn’t going to be full of polos and khakis because they most likely do not wear polos and khakis outside of school.
