In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses many different conflicts to prove the point that overcoming obstacles is tough to do alone. The narrator of this book is Scout Finch, who takes us through her childhood in a city called Maycomb in Alabama in the 1930s. Maycomb is like every other city in the south, most people being racist. Scout and her brother, Jem, are the children of Atticus Finch, who tries to teach them many lessons about growing up and about life. Atticus is the lawyer for a black man named Tom Robinson in a trial where he is being trialed for raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. It is a detriment that Tom is black because there is a lot of racism. Mayella’s family is a dirty and disrespectful family in that town. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel that retells the realism of racism and how it affects innocent lives throughout history. The entire story itself isn’t far from the sad truth; an African American by the name of Tom Robinson, was accused of a crime and was almost wrongly convicted due to the color of his skin. The female accuser, Mayella Ewell, was a part of the poorest family in all of the town which was referred by everyone in Maycomb as “trash.” The main character/narrator of the story is named Scout Finch; she was not a part of the richest family in Maycomb but certainly was not a part of the poorest family either. Her father’s name is Atticus Finch and he is a lawyer that will come to defend Tom in the trial; his goal is to show that the color of someone’s skin doesn’t matter.
To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee, that has a basic plot about the novel where there are two children with their widow father and the main protagonist is named Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus who live in the sleepy Alabama town of Maycomb. Maycomb is suffering through the Great Depression, they live through social inequality in the south. Atticus the mature, wise, confident and bold father is a lawyer for Maycomb county who is defending an innocent black man who is accused for a crime he didn’t commit and so the accuser, Mayella Ewell, who accused the defendant, Tom Robinson, for rape and is now guilty then dead later in the novel. Then Scout and Jem are later protected by the town’s misunderstood and misjudged man Boo Radley who would help in secrecy. Throughout the story, it shares two themes that I found interesting “the coexistence of good and evil” and “the existence of social inequality.”
In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” there are a few heroes, one is Atticus Finch, but he is not the real hero. Harper lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a narration of a young girl called Scout Finch, the daughter of a lawyer in their hometown named Maycomb. Atticus Finch (Scout’s father) agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been wrongly accused of raping a white girl, knowing that he will lose the case as the town is highly racist and it is very rare for a black man to be deemed not guilty. Harper Lee has looked at in the novel. Some of these include racism, segregation, family, injustice, and a few more. But one of the most visible to readers is examples of heroism. Heroism takes many forms, However, an action must cost the person/hero something and must serve other people positively. Atticus is clearly one of the heroes in the book, but other characters in the book do more heroic things and prove themselves to be heroes much more compared to Atticus Finch.
Sydney Smith said “Never try to reason the prejudice out of a man. It was not reasoned into him, and cannot be reasoned out.” To Kill a Mocking Bird tells the story of a girl name Scout, a boy named Jem and their father who is named Atticus Finch who all live in maycomb. Atticus who is a lawyer has the responsibillity to take the case of Tom Robinson who is black and accused of rape. Along this path the Finch familly faces many instances prejudice and discrimination from the town. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows how reason and intelligence is overcome with prejudice and discrimination. This is shown against the characters Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch and Boo Radley.
