A hero is “a man (or occasionally a woman) of superhuman strength, courage, or ability, favored by the gods.” Based on this quote, found on “The Oxford English Dictionary Online,” one can assume that the hero would be a man based on the terms that are used. People often associate a man as being the almighty power in a situation. They are referred to as the hero. One does not often find a movie about superheroes with the hero being a woman. Gender should not define who is the better person. In order for one to be a hero, one must step up to the plate and destroy the monster behind the situation. If a woman is able to accomplish that task, then why can they not become a hero for society to cherish. Using The Hero With a Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell, Alien can be seen to argue how women are equal to men through the stages of a hero’s journey.

Todays society usually views heroes as male characters, as they are the definition of a hero according to dictionary.com "is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities." So what then is a female called when she also displays the characteristics of nobility, brave deeds and courage? In the case of the book Tomorrow when the war began, her name is Ellie Linton. Ellie does what others would not, in order to save her friends from the dangers caused by the invaders.

In the short story, “Where are you going? Where have you been?” written by Joyce Carol Oates depicts how being young and innocent, conflicts with the reality of evil people out there. Connie, the main character of the story, is a 15 year old girl that has sexual fantasies. When she is confronted with the harsh realities of adulthood, she cannot think and ends up making a life decision that saves her family, making her the hero. Hero is someone who makes sacrifices that they may not be happy to do and may impact their lives in a negative way, but they do it for the sake of people they love. On the webpage hero means, “A person, who in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded a a role model or ideal” (dictionary). They are looked upon and considered role models because no anyone is willing to make all the sacrifices that they do, but desire to be like them.

In poetry and in song, literature, and action movies, the hero embodies the qualities of bravery, strength, and honor. According to Merriam-Webster, a hero is a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability: a warrior: a person admired for achievements and noble qualities: one who shows great courage. While others define this concept as a trustworthy cause a selfish or unselfish act. On the other hand, a hero is someone who stands for integrity and justice for all mankind and willingly put his life in peril for that belief. As noted there will always be different definitions of a hero as of the diverse perspective on the issue.

According to Joseph Campbell, "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" . This means that a hero is person who is made a sacrifice for the good of others. A Hero is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities" . This means that a hero is someone people look up to. Anyone can be a hero. Heroes have qualities such as bravery, strength, and selflessness. Mothers, soldiers, and Odysseus are all examples of heroes.

A hero is someone who is admired and valued for their courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. A hero to one person may not be a hero to another. I strongly agree with this definition for a hero to a person is not always a hero to others. In saying this, my hero is Isabelle Bruce Reid because she was the first female to qualify in Australia as a veterinarian. To me, Isabelle Reid was a name in history who changed the world, is valued and is a great role model.

A hero is a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character. A hero is someone that someone looks up to, because of many reasons like their acts of kindness or how they react when problems occur. Many people look up to Beowulf because of how passionate he was towards killing the monsters who attacked Heorot. Shania Shaffer is my hero because she protects this country from the “monsters” who try to harm our country and take over. Beowulf and Shania are two heroic figures that epitomize humility, patience, selflessness, caring, and show courage and bravery.

A hero can be viewed differently in many eyes. Author and lecturer Joseph Campbell, has correlated a hero as usually being a male, often of lowly birth, but with special powers or a higher birthright, the hero doesn’t know about. Also, the hero parents are often dead, absent, or uncaring, and the hero is judged by the actions he takes and the way he reacts and relates to people. In the opinions of others, a hero is also a person admired for bravery, great achievements, abilities or good qualities and is regarded as a role model. A hero is “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. So would a hero be considered Superman, Spiderman, Captain America, or Batman? James Fenimore Cooper wrote a five part series called The Leatherstocking Tales. These tales were about Nathaniel “Hawkeye” Bumpo, who years later was claimed to be the first literary American hero. There are many variations when definitions what is a hero. Some people think of a hero as being someone who is strong, intelligent, attractive, and daring others think of capes and superhuman powers. Typically our perception of a hero changes with maturity and life experiences. Heroes have many different qualities that can be overlooked such as honesty, patience, compassion, and forgiveness. Merriam Webster’s simple definition of a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities (cited).

Some of these heroic figures include Beowulf, from the epic poem Beowulf, Sir Gawain from the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Portia from William Shakespeare play The Merchant of Venice. All three characters play a huge part in the texts and demonstrate their different types of characteristics when it comes to being a hero.

What comes to mind when one thinks of a male specific hero? Possibly a big, strong, and bulky person; physically heroic traits. How about a female hero? One would more likely think of an extremely generous, empathetic, type hero; less physical and more personality type of traits. Given this, the definition of heroism is clearly not equal for both sexes.

What does it mean to be a hero?  According to Webster, a hero is someone "of great strength [and] courage" who is "admired" for his or her "courage and nobility."1  Stretching this definition a bit further, I would argue that a hero is someone who uses this strength, courage, and nobility to help or save others.  Nora Helmer, in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, leaves her husband and family at the end of the play-a move that can be viewed as either very selfish or very heroic.  Because Nora uses her strength and courage in effort to save others and herself from the false "doll's house" life they are living in, her final act of leaving home is truly heroic.  Nora saves
