“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Heroes are ordinary people that go more out of their way to do get a certain job done. Still, there are many things of what a hero does, what a hero is, and even what a hero is not.
A hero may have several purposes depending on who you consider a hero. According to the dictionary, “A person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble events.” We as a society believe now that a hero is someone who has to go through extreme measures such as run into a burning building. Yet not everyone can do that, that is why a hero can be someone who is there for you when times get rough. Heroes can be made up of many different types of people that do different kinds of tasks. Such as being there for someone when they need comforting, saving a drowning child at the pool, or being someone’s role model. Well a hero can very from all sorts of people. For instance, “We’ve known what a hero was even before we ever knew there was a word for it. Most of us have had the experience of witnessing the actions of another and being humbled and filled with awe. And it’s easy to give the title ‘hero’ to athletes and musicians, first responders men and women in the military. Even some politicians get the title” (Tim Jahnigen). A hero does not have need to be a man in a cape that has superpowers. A person given the title of a hero can be man or female, even some animals such as dogs. Someone’s hero could also be a friend or family member that served in the military. For example, my grandpa is my hero, not only because he served in the military and trained men afterwards, but he goes out of his way to help anyone in need.
