Helen Keller: The Perkins School For The Blind

Helen Keller has taught the entire nation that it is possible to overcome obstacles and obtain goals. At the age of nineteen months, she was stricken by an illness called “brain fever”, that left her blind and deaf. It is evident that Keller lived a strenuous life, but along the way she managed to establish the American Civil Liberties Union and received many honors in recognition of her accomplishments. The fact that a blind and deaf woman accomplished so many achievements over the course of her lifetime and is known as one of the most memorable women alive, simply amazes me. Although our lives do not necessarily alline, I hope to be as successful as Helen Keller was and overcome any obstacles that come my way.

Do you think you could live being blind and deaf? Well, Helen Keller managed to live her very interesting life with those two problems. At the age of 2, she had a brain fever, and it caused her to go blind, deaf, and mute. She changed an impact on everyone who had disorders like her and let them know that they had a chance at the things that were difficult for them. Helen’s life as a child was confusing and even more difficult for her because she was just learning how to live with her disabilities.

Helen Keller was a social activist throughout the late 1800s and much of the 1900s for the deaf and blind. She went blind and deaf at a young age from a disease but learned how to communicate with the world. She went to Horace Mann School for the Deaf, Wright-Humason School for the Deaf, and Cambridge School for Young Ladies for college. On June 23, 1953, Keller gave a speech at the National University of Mexico to promote rights for the blind specifically. Helen Keller effectively convinces her audience blind people need equal rights through the use of repetition and emotional appeals.

Her unwavering devotion and constant support of gaining women rights that equaled men shaped her legacy and led to women actually gaining these rights. Her unfamiliarity in modern history is nothing short of a tragedy. For she chose to voice her opinion in the face of criticism, act upon her beliefs in unforgiving circumstances and fight for what she felt was right when she knew that she would be ridiculed and called preposterous for it. As she stated in her writings “I hope there are some who will brave ridicule for the sake of common justice for half the people in the world”. She led those brave few and ended up winning rights for a person that had been undermined for hundreds of years prior:

Helen Keller was a deaf and blind author, lecturer, and political activist from the United States. Her teacher, Anne Sullivan, taught her how to communicate and eventually Keller became the first deaf and blind person to receive a Bachelor of Arts. She wrote many books and advocated for labor rights, socialism, woman’s suffrage, antimilitarism, and many other controversial topics.

Her parents hired a teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen everything she needed to know. After Keller went to college, she wrote many books for the blind, and she went around the world lecturing to people. She also founded and promoted The American Foundation for the Blind and many other charities. Things changed for the better because of the hard work that Helen Keller did. she changed the way the world viewed people with disabilities. Finally, she was a global inspiration. She inspires people every day to stand up for what they believe in and not shy away. we will forever live by her standards and continue her beliefs to do what is needed for equality.

"I used to wander around crashing into things, but then I found that things are bigger than I am. That is thanks to you," Helen told Annie her teacher. As an infant she could see and hear, but by the age of two, due to an illness, she no longer could. Helen Keller is considered to be a hero among many people. She has had a lasting effect on everyone with disabilities and everyone else. Her history and background are different from everyone else, she has many obsticles that she overcame and became her accomplishments, and her legacy, she left behind is still important for everyone to hear.

We cannot choose what we are when we are born, but we can use our own efforts to change what we can be in the future. Helen is one of the best examples to teach us how we can face the difficulties and fight against it. When I look at myself, I am so lucky to have a health body and mind, a loving family and several friends around. But I still feel little value for all those things I have, and did not appreciate. Helen Keller was a woman who impacted American history. She was known for many quotes, books, and speeches. Many people have heard of the illness she had but many people also know that the illness did not stop her from doing anything. Helen could not hear or see. Helen once said “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight without a vision.” Helen sure had a vison but no sight, she lead out her vison until she died.

She is best known for being able to understand the sign language for W-A-T-E-R meant something while having her hand under running water from a pump. She became a college graduate, teacher, advocate for the disabled – specifically for the blind and a motivational model for all. 3. When thinking of Helen Keller, there are three qualities that comes to mind. Persistence, courageous and inspiring.

Helen Keller created hope for lots of people who had a disability of some sort and showed them that you do not have to be held back just because of that disability. Like how Anne Sullivan kept trying with Helen to help her understand, even though after multiple attempts, she didn't. After lots of determination, Helen finally understood. One of the most infulential and inspirational women of all time was Rosa Parks. By one action she helped change the lives of a majority ofAfrican Americans and more importantly society as a whole. Rosa Parks sparked the attention of America when she refused to settle for the black (lower class)standards. Not only did she help change the lives for many African Americans but she helped equality for all men and women in the United States. By one brave women our world will be forever thankful.

She wrote many articles about socialism, an essay series “Out of the Dark” touched upon her political and world views (“Helen Keller Biography”). This was all done during a time when woman really were not given the credit they were due. I believe this became instrumental to her involvement in the founding or co-founding of many organizations that were extremely important during this early time period and are still in existence today. These organizations were the American Civil Liberties Union, American Federation for the Blind, and the Permanent Blind War Relief Fund or what was later known as American Braille Press.
