Heathers: How it relates to today
On Thursday February 15, 2018, I had the honors of seeing the musical Heathers. This was the first time I had seen a musical from the theater department here at UNCG. Initially, I was nervous about the content I would see as well as how the theater department would execute the musical. When the house opened up, I was amazed! Amazed by the props and decorations in the proscenium stage I could see the theme because of the lockers and therefore I concluded that the central location of the musical was a school, there was an upbeat atmosphere that arose in the theater from everyone being excited to watch the musical. The day before the musical’s debut a school shooting had happened in Florida, I was nervous about how my emotions would be as well as the audience. The audience’s feelings toward the musical actually act as a bouncy house and they bounce out on me. However, at the end of ACT 1 going into ACT 2 I was grateful that UNCG’s Theater department decided to show the musical. Satire is “a comedy that is used to attack evil or foolishness, to mock or make fun of particularly powerful institutions or people” (theater notes). Heathers is a satire because it mocks how adults and society view teenagers. Often times when times get hard for students, they commit suicide. In the musical, Heather’s after J.D. killed someone he and Veronica would pair up to create a fake suicide note. In today’s society when a child kills themselves the parents become aware to the pain and trauma the child felt before that they couldn’t express. One distinct selection that stood out to me was “I love my dead gay son”, in that selection Ram’s dad, Bill Sweeny, found out his son was gay per suicide note and professed his love for his son at the funeral. Another point Heather’s portrayed about teenagers is that they are easily influenced by others. Martha, tried to commit suicide after all of the deaths from her classmate. As for the adults, Heather’s mock how adults present the trauma students or teenagers go through as a charity case.
