Chris Lilley's Summer Heights High is a highly controversial mockumentary that showcases 3 different over exaggerated characters. One of them is Jonah Takalua, a stereotypical Tongan delinquent. Many have praised his work, saying that it is a clever use of satire to convey important criticisms of today's society. However after learning about satire myself throughout this unit I have determined that Summer Heights High is an unsuitable and highly ineffective show for teaching satire in secondary school due to the high levels of crude language and stereotypical humour shown in Jonah that conceals the satirical techniques used. Jonah has been represented extremely ineffectively through the poor use of the satirical techniques of exaggerated caricature and ridicule which certainly have the potential to influence students negatively. Lilley’s social criticism of the view that all Polynesian students are seen as trouble makers, is lost by his overemphasis on the very behaviours he is satirising.

On October 5, 2016, Fowlerville High School freshman, Brendan Kangas, committed suicide. His whole school and community was struck with grief, previously unaware of Brendan’s battle with depression. The next day school was held on schedule, and it was a very unproductive day. According to the faculty, kids were crying in classrooms, and uninstructed teachers did not know how to handle the situation (Brent). Many Fowlerville students have struggled academically, unable to cope with the news of Brendan’s death. Fowlerville was not prepared to handle such a crisis and administrators were unaware of the effect Brendan’s suicide would have on the school. Heather tells Melinda that they can’t be friends anymore and Melinda gets mad because she feels like she is the one who took Heather under wing since she was brand new to the area and didn’t know anyone. Now Heather goes to sit with “The Martha” group and Melinda is left to sit by herself at lunch every day. Melinda starts getting depressed that she has nobody to talk to and she starts skipping class and getting bad grades, her parents and teachers notice this new change in her but think she is just trying to get attention from them so they just sort of ignore it but her art teacher doesn’t and encourages her to speak and show her expressions through her artwork. Melinda then becomes friends with a guy names David Petrakis who is her lab partner in science and he is pushes Melinda to speak up. A little while later Melinda sees her old friend from middle school, Rachel start dating Andy Evans, the boy who raped her and she wants to worn her but doesn’t want to speak so she tells her by passing notes to her while they are in the

The technical aspects of the production such as scenery, properties and costumes also played a keynote in the productions success. The scenery was fabulous it truly made the play. It was very realistic and extremely vibrant. Almost the entire play was performed in one setting, except for the railcar and dance scenes. The house, the main setting, was magnificent with painstakingly placed detail in every corner. All elements in the house matched wonderfully, for example the furniture, the photos on the wall, the telephone and even the trash can. Little bits of detail were everywhere adding to the beautification of the set, for example the lace decorations on the chairs, the etched glass above the front door and even the Christmas tree.

Later on at the supper table, Heather announces that she will be attending Columbia University after she graduates from high school contrary to the plan Mr. Hoodhood already had for her to go to work for him at Hoodhood and Associates and be safe from the world around her. Though her father thinks it’s a school where kids stand around and protest all day. She enlightens him that “it’s a school where students are striking against the war and against racism. ”(201). Heather believes that the school has good morals and beliefs, and she wants to go help and participate in those protests because she believes in the same things.

Broward College, Central Campus Theater in building 6, on Sunday, the 1st of November. The play was performed by Broward College students. The type of stage was Proscenium stage with extended apron. I thought it was a little bit small, but it did not show as a problem. The pre-show was dark and a feel of suspense. I felt excited to see how everything would play out. The play takes place down south of Chicago in the 1950’s.

Even though I do not know well about American TV shows as a Korean, I picked a TV show, New Girl, among many TV show list of the website. “New Girl,” is an American sitcom television series about a story of a young woman’s, Jessica, finding her boyfriend. This TV show portrays real life of common people and draws sympathy of audiences. It says it’s OK to mourn breakups and unfortunate reality of being unemployed is not a shame. Many people would be consoled by watching this show.

From informing millions about current news to allowing sports fans to watch their team playing across the country, television has truly been one of the most revolutionary inventions of the past century. More recently, television programs have begun to comment and take a position on current events. In particular, satire has been very common, as it uses wit and irony to critique certain aspects of society.

This genre is typically modern, perky and upbeat, but the common narrative in all of them is that it features a woman who is strong and she overcomes adversity to reach her goals. There is also a message of empowerment that also struggles with a romantic predicament and using comedy to poke fun at the male characters. Industries are still producing soppy romantic comedies for the female audience but the divide between the standard chick flick and romantic comedy is slowly disappearing. Similarly to the beginning of this essay it is evident that institutions are moving in the direction of women’s place in culture in relation to this film genre; women are usually shown as the super power since they are made to appeal to the female audience. The movie that I have chosen is a classic film from 1988 called Heathers. Heathers is an American cult black comedy film written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann. The film portrays four teenage girls—three of whom are named Heather—in a clique and a teen named Veronica Sawyer who desperately wants to fit in, as well as a crazy and unstable boy named J.D that plans to ruin it all. The focus of this essay will be on three characters. Analyzing their internal and external battles, as well as their social interactions with loved ones and other members of their fictional society.

As we dressed for the show, my thoughts were flooded with images and ideas. We descended the hotel stairs, hailed a taxi, and arrived at the theatre; while I remained in a pleasant daze. My first impression of the Nederlander met and exceeded all my expectations. I had envisioned an old theater, forgotten by the Broadway elite. As we walked to the door, we were able to see the wall signed by the cast and photos of the premier. The theater itself had a rundown feel to it and left you with the distinct impression that the magic was within the walls and on stage. As we entered the doors, I soaked in every thing. Our seats were located in the center, orchestra section, which gave us a perfect view of all the action.

Glaspell spent more than forty years working as a journalist, fiction writer, playwright and promoter of various artistic. She is a woman who lived in a male dominated society. She is the author of a short story titled A Jury of Her Peers. She was inspired to write this story when she investigated in the homicide of John Hossack, a prosperous county warren who had been killed in his sleep(1).Such experience in Glaspell’s life stimulated inspiration. The fact that she was the first reporter on scene, explains that she must have found everything still in place, that makes an incredible impression. She feels what Margaret (who is Minnie Wright in the story) had gone through, that is, she has sympathy for her. What will she say about Margaret? Will she portray Margaret as the criminal or the woman who’s life has been taken away? In the short story Minnie Wright was the victim. Based on evidence at the crime scene, it is clear that Minnie has killed her husband; however, the women have several reasons for finding her “not guilty” of the murder of John Wright.

This is a must watch Broadway show that makes your fine, terrible, or even boring day, an absolute blast. The Play That Goes Wrong has finally made its way to America and right at the heart of New York City near Times Square at the Lyceum Theatre. Therefore, the experience is a win-win situation for the audience. The Lyceum Theatre’s architecture is astonishing as it is filled with ornaments, I also realized the letter ‘L’ around the theater, but the most interesting fact is that it is a landmark. It has a proscenium stage while the audience is in the orchestra, balcony, or the mezzanine seats, like where I sat, and there is barely any space if you are a tall person. My seat was near the far end of mezzanine, I couldn’t see a part of the left side of the stage, so I found myself bending sideways to see what was going on, but I saw nothing. I found the side stage lights and a side balcony blocking my view and yet I had a great time.

Judging something only by its appearance can greatly deceive a person. Reality is where the actual truth lies. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, three witches intrigue Macbeth with a few prophecies that give rise to his blind ambition, and unleash his murderous tendencies, as well as a love of power. Character development is used to show what happens when appearance is taken for reality. Macbeth's whole character changes after he chooses to wholeheartedly believe the witches’ prophecies, and as a result, he goes from being a military hero to being a tragic hero by the end of the play.
