Heart For Homeless: SWOT Analysis

Our country’s current economic crisis is drastically affecting not just individuals, but businesses and organizations as well, especially when it comes to those that are non-profit. Funding for necessary programs held by non-profit organizations, such as Moses Cone Behavioral Health, have been cut annually, making it more difficult for their institutions to prosper. Due to these substantial declines in donations and funds, local volunteers are needed now more than ever. I chose to volunteer at Moses Cone Behavioral Health Hospital to help combat this loss in funding.

A Homeless Task Force was created by the Mayor of Sidney, Ohio. He saw that there were homeless citizens who were suffering in the cold. He created a Task Force in order to start programming and community services for these individuals.

This past week during class, I decided to go visit the Hunger and Homelessness kiosk located in the center of North Plaza. This event is part of the George Mason Action Week. From November 15th to the 20th, this committee held numerous events that either taught people about homelessness or had events to donate goods. One event, for example, was the Action Week Support Drive held on Monday the 16th. For this event, people would go to SUB I Mall and donate clothing and nonperishable food items. Other events during this awareness week included different informational banquets or more good drives. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to every event offered, but simply talking with the event coordinators and volunteers really opened my eyes about homelessness

There is an estimate of over half a million homeless people living in the United States today, one hundred thousand living in Michigan alone. These individuals lose their jobs to an unbalanced economy, have health complications or simply fall upon hard times. Fortunately there have been numerous nonprofit organizations set up in efforts to aid these people in their time of need. The followings are the possible extraneous variables that can be influenced the study include: Settings, present health status, and the tool using (tape recorder). Settings can influence the result of this study because homeless individuals who live on the streets roam around and they normally do not have a stable place to be. Fortunately, these particular homeless individuals can be controlled because they can be targeted at Salvation Army Ministries lunches serving streets in most of the Polk County. These individuals regularly roaming on these specific streets and corners to get lunch every day and they will be the best participants to recruit for this study. The Udall S.U.N Club is an amazing organization that focuses on the community’s needs. Every first Saturday of every month they meet in a local spot in our town and cook a community breakfast for the whole town. This organization is a non-profit organization because every penny they make goes into the groceries they get once a month to feed the community. Their mission statement includes “serving Udall’s needs” and that is exactly what they do each month. I have had an amazing opportunity to be able to provide my services to this amazing organization for the past few months and it has been an eye-opener to see how these people dedicate their time and hard work to see a smile on someone else’s face. I have learned so much through this organization.

I have decided to create a social program that identifies the social problem of Homelessness. The new human services, social program will target helping homeless individuals and families to get off the streets. In order to have a successful program I have to come up with an outline and cover all of the basics. This program will have many different resources available to homeless or about to be homeless individuals and families. There are so many homeless people out there and her in the state of Florida there are not many places for homeless people to turn to for comfort and safety. So I am truly excited to be creating this new program that will help many people to go forward and live wonderful and successful lives, no matter what they have been through. Throughout this paper I will be discussing some of the things that are needed in order to start an organization. This paper will serve as an outline or an information source on how to create a social program as well as the social program that I am creating.

There are many populations that are medically vulnerable and underserved globally and they change depending on the region on the world you are in. However, one medically vulnerable and underserved population can be found in all regions on the world, is the homeless population. Savage, Lindell, Giepsie, Lee and Corbin state that “About 1.2 % of the US population experiences homelessness at any given point in time, with a lifetime prevalence of &7.5% within the general US population” (2008, p. 469).

My program will serve the homeless in Columbus, Georgia. Columbus, Georgia is in need of additional supporting programs to assist the homeless. “The most recent count given by the Muscogee County School District for students experiencing homeless in the 2011-2012 year was 2212 . Upon graduating from school, I plan to implement a nutritional education program (Have a Heart: Homeless Nutrition Project) for the stakeholders and homeless population in my city; specifically, those who donate goods for the homeless, such as churches and residents, the organizations that prepare the food, like churches and charity groups, and those who disperse these goods: pantries and soup kitchens. Moving forward, I would like to start a doctorate program in Community Health Education, where I can polish my skills and continue my research regarding barriers to healthy food for homeless populations. As with most industrialized areas, homelessness is prevalent in my community. People are left without options as jobs become increasingly competitive. Homelessness is ubiquitous, yet it is a topic that is rarely discussed because it makes us feel uncomfortable. We feel uncomfortable that people die on the streets, uncomfortable because we're scared to help, uncomfortable because we are solicited. As a leader in my community, I know that change starts from the bottom up. Last year, as with the year before, I helped to assemble and distribute care packages to the homeless community in downtown San Jose. Unfortunately, the homeless has little access to health care related to many factors. The homeless face health risks and are more likely to suffer from mental health issues and chronic health problems. They are exposed to the elements and have poor nutrition and limited access to health care (Potter, Perry, Stockert, and Hall, 2015, p. 620). As a result of limited access, they have less of an opportunity to receive help to prevent or treat illness and injuries. By not receiving help from care providers, their risk for injuries, infection, and terminal illnesses are highly increased. They are susceptible to many diseases more than someone who does receive health care.
