Health Information Exchange (HIE) supports both transferring and sharing of health related information that is usually stored in multiple organizations, while maintaining the context and integrity of the information being exchanged (HIE, 2014). The goal of health information exchange is to expedite access to and retrieve clinical data to provide safe efficient, effective, equitable, timelier patient-centered care (HIE, 2014). HIE “provides access and retrieval of patient information to authorized users in order to provide safe, efficient, effective, and timely patient care” (HIE, 2014). The one components of HIE is directed exchange, which is the ability to send and receive secure information electronically between care providers to support coordinated care (HIE, 2014). This can be useful when patient goes from facility to facility. My current facility, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Outpatient Clinic can access veteran’s records from other outside hospitals, by connecting to the EPIC system at another facility. This allows patient to access their medical records anytime, online from the outside of the VA. Veterans are able to keep a log of various labs and keep track of their health records (HIE, 2014). Veterans can access to their own health information, which can improve the effectiveness and coordination of their health care by sharing information with other providers, identifying potential medical errors, correcting inaccurate health and billing information, and making more-informed decisions (HIE, 2014). The VA Outpatient clinic has MyHealthE Vet, which is an online system that allows veterans to access their medical health record from the outside of the facility.
