Today’s understanding of health is very different to how health was viewed 60-80 years ago, like animals, we humans evolve over time, we adapt, we learn and our lifestyles change. However, with these chances in lifestyle we find that we are more open to risk-taking and illnesses, which is why todays understand of health is very different to how it was viewed 60-80 Years ago. Health is a hard word to define as it means so many different things to people depending on your background, race, sex or age. In the 20th century a person’s health was first measured as person who was free from disease or injury, but in 1946 it was defined by the World Health Organisation as ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. This definition explains that health isn’t just based on how physical wellbeing of a person but a range such as mental and social health. Physical health refers to the state of fitness a person’s body is in and how well its functioning. Physical health is affected by lifestyle choices, immunity, level of physical activity and energy levels, a person with optimal health would have a balanced diet, partake in daily activity, have sufficient energy level and is free from disease or illness. Social health refers to the interactions and relationships between people and the ability to adapt to a range of different social situations. It’s being able to react and behave in an acceptable manner at the right times in our relationships with other. Mental health refers to the state of the individual’s wellbeing, the ability to think logically and to cope with normal stresses of life. Emotional health is based on the ability to manage feelings about ourselves and others self-esteem and self-confidence are key to having a well emotional health. Spiritual health is a person’s beliefs or meaning in life, like a religion or way of life.
That’s why health is so hard to define because all the dimensions of health are interlinked so a positive or negative chance in one can affect the others just as much, so ensure optimal health one much be as proficient as they can be in all the dimensions of health to reach
