Health Education Philosophy

In my quest to find that “perfect or ideal” career I took the time to explore my thoughts on what I would like to take into the education world. In other words, what I would vision as my legacy. There are two outstanding purposes for my choosing to be an educator. The first of those reasons for selecting a career in education is the ability to be a positive influence. It is common knowledge that youth (children and teenagers) are affected greatly by the adults in their life. A teacher is one of those individuals.. I browed and build upon what I learned from AHS 391 Educational Methods, AHS 341 Health Science Research Method, and the CPE training in AHS 409 Health Screening. During my co-op, I developed and implemented a weekly educational program for my peers through Motivational Mondays. To do so, I conducted research, developed educational materials and interacted/taught my peers. The two curriculums that I will be teaching are Physical Education and Health Education. I believe it is essential to teach fitness at a young age in order for the students to have a life they can further enjoy by being healthy. I also think that educating students about the human body and being able to use your body in physical activity is essential to have a healthy lifestyle. In May of 2014, I began taking classes at Pima Community College targeted for direct care professionals, including histology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology, nutrition, lifespan development, and psychology. Through these courses, I was able to gain a better understanding of how the body and mind works and develops throughout life. One issue that is currently causing a big debate in my school district is health education. Just this year, the school district has approved that sex education must be taught in all schools and is not optional. Many parents thought they would be able to decline the sex education classes; however, the classes were included in the curriculum of health education. As a result, every student must take all of the sex education classes because they are listed within the health education curriculum. In addition, the school board has also voted and approved that students 7th grade and above will also be educated on gender identity and transgender issues (Shapiro, 2015).

In addition, my background in education makes me committed to bringing nursing and education together, by implementing professional pedagogy into nursing and by emphasizing patient education as a tool for promoting optimal health and preventing complications.

My passion for teaching others has led me to ask many questions to my professors and tutors throughout my journey. I know that I will continue asking questions because we will always learn something new every day. That is why even though I have an undeniable passion for language, I would love to have the opportunity to learn what public health really is and how it benefits us as individuals. I currently work in a surgical center called Shammas Eye Medical Center as a medical assistant. I have learned through the various physicians and surgeons the importance of educating patients on prevention and management. I am very dedicated to opening student’s eyes to show them how something as simply as physical activities can change their lives. Giving students confidence to be anything they want in life but it starts inside their bodies first.
