The Quality of Health Economic Studies (QHES) tool was designed to evaluate cost-minimization, cost-effectiveness, and cost-utility health economic analyses.1 A perceived strength of such an instrument is that it is a helpful aid in determining if the health economic analysis is considered to be of high quality based on the user’s assessment of the 16 questions which can result in a score between 0-100. According to the Spearman’s rho test (coefficient=0.78, P<0.0001) and the Wilcoxon test (P=0.53), the QHES tool has good convergent validity. The result of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA, F3, 146+-5.97, P=0.001) implied that the instrument has good discriminant validity2 as well. The construct validity (e.g., convergent and discriminant validity) has not been formally tested.1 Moreover, the user should be relatively well-versed with such economic studies to provide a robust score but that is not always the case as results may differ substantially from one person to the next based on their respected background and understanding of the health economics study. Lastly, the tool has multiple questions embedded within the 16 questions and if all criteria are not met, the score is 0 for that item.
