One’s path in life is guided by a series of choices. Making the right choice can be life-changing. Obstacles can be viewed as barriers but they often open doors to opportunity. Throughout my life I have had many surgeries, medical problems, and injuries that have helped mold me into the strong, compassionate person I am today. I have had the opportunity to meet many healthcare workers along the way that have shared their knowledge and goals. This has given me a passion to work in healthcare providing all people the same empathy and medical expertise that I have been shown. Though I am unsure what specific field I will pursue, any career in healthcare will allow me the chance to interact with people of all races and backgrounds. The College
Barriers to healthcare include factors that restrict or hinder people from receiving adequate and quality health care service. Health care disparities are those differences that negatively affects less advantaged group (Mehta, 2014). Health care barriers play a significant role in comprehending causes of disparities. This paper will discuss the obstacles and disparities that exist and affects healthcare.
A time in my life in which I have been successful is when I graduate from college. Even though this was my second degree I was going to receive, it was the next stepping stone to heighten my career in healthcare. It was an uneasy decision, but I was determined to achieve my Bachelor’s in Science in Healthcare Administration.
Thus, the most influential reason I am striving to attend University of Michigan is the Health Sciences Scholars Program. This program includes classes that are specific to the health sciences, in comparison to classes at other universities that won’t satisfy my specific interests. The program provides a plethora of community service opportunities that allow students to actually make a difference in the community while also practicing skills needed in the field of health care. As a HSSP student I would be participating in professional observations, where I would be able to work with health care professionals while also being exposed to different careers. Many students aspiring to work in the health care field don’t have the opportunity to work with patients or doctors until they go to medical school, but I could accomplish this through HSSP during my freshman year. I can’t be a superhero without some prior experience after all. In comparison to other residential programs, such as Lyman Briggs at Michigan State, the Health Sciences Scholars Program at University of Michigan would provide me with the most opportunities to grow and pursue my passion for medicine and healing
I am a Health Services Administration major. It has been a long time goal of mine to enter the healthcare field, but more so in the administrative field of healthcare. I have miniscule work experience in the healthcare field; I have worked previously as a customer service representative scheduling transportation reservations for patient medical appointments. As of now, I am working as an appointment scheduler for nurse practitioners to make in-home visits.
As the coming years approach, I want my future to hold both the passion to explore new opportunities and the strength to overcome new challenges. With the experiences of my high school career, I aspire to take all the things I learned to transition into a college environment where my ideas can be challenged and shared. Where I can learn from others; where I can seek the opportunity to make a direct impact towards saving lives. I believe I can do great things. Through tenacity I will not only be gratified in becoming a doctor, but also be able to share my compassion for others through
When a health care organization is implementing a strategy, being aware and planning for the primary barriers will help in having a successful outcome. Primary barrier can include personal factors like lack of agreement, lack of skills, lack of motivation, or even lack of awareness. These are all types of internal barriers. Some of the primary external barriers can include lack of resources, outside organizational constraints, and lack of collaboration. The lack of evidence is another example of a primary barrier in health care.
At both the macro and micro levels cost, access, and quality are three major barriers in health care delivery. When looking into cost, “numerous of factors have been attributed to the rising health care expenditures.” One reason behind medical cost inflation is the growth of technology; our nation is changing on a daily basis by innovative and technology outbreaks. “The use of advanced imaging scanning during visits to physical offices and outpatient departments more than tripled from 1996 to 2007” (NCHS2010a). New technology is expensive to develop, and individuals who have Medicare or any type of insurance, whether it is private or through work expect high-quality imaging services. Another barrier related to cost is the increase in elderly
After my observations, I have learned a lot about how the the medical aspect of the health care system worked. I always had the mindset that the doctors were the ones who ran everything in a hospital or a clinic. Upon observing, I realized that this was false and that it took teamwork, cooperation, and communication to help create an environment to best serve its patients. When I came into the University of Michigan as well as the Health Sciences Scholar Program, I had set my target to go into family medicine in order to pursue a career as a family physician. I also saw that there were many health disparities and inequities among patients in hospitals as well. I thought maybe I could help fix this if I became a physician. After my observations, I had an ambivalent feeling if I should still continue with what my heart was set on. I never really thought about exploring the vast array of other health-related professions. There were many fields of health professions I had really never thought about and this class as well as my observations had really helped open my eyes to the complexity of the health system to make it work.
Barriers to consider are the lack of correct data or the proper data collection done by IHS. The possibilities of lack of resources, lack of money, personnel to carry out the plan, and establishing the program on schedule will be major barriers to overcome. Other barriers that might also causes concerns are the lack of community support with modern western medicine. Furthermore, the lack of knowledge of culture and traditions of different Native American tribes should be considered. Other challenges to consider are not raising enough money to fully assist all Native American communities. Furthermore, the possibilities of not meeting all the demands of keeping the cost of supplies, equipment and materials, low and affordable can put the plan at risk.
I feel that many health care providers are faced with daily struggles that consists of doing things that may go against their personal beliefs. However, when taking care of a patient it is their beliefs or practices that come forth and they need to be accommodated in order to make them feel comfortable and respected. Many health care providers struggle with putting their beliefs to the side. For example, a health care provider may not personally agree with abortion but if they have a patient that asks for information regarding the subject the providers’ principles cannot interfere with the factual information that needs to be explained to the patient. In health care it is necessary that workers respect others choices and beliefs and that they
Throughout the course of history, the field of healthcare has always been in a state of flux; however, healthcare has also had one steady aspect and that is women have always been at a disadvantage when it comes to traversing the system. Women have and still do face many obstacles within the health care system. These obstacles include research androcentrism, medicalization, gender stereotyping, reproductive rights, differential treatment, and fertility issues, among others… In order to better help women navigate the healthcare system and to support women’s rights in the present and future, the obstacles women face must be explored and analyzed.
My goal is to have a career in health care management. While researching careers, I discovered health care management. I choose health care management as my career option for two reasons. I’m looking for a career where I can do what I passionate about and impact lives. These are important factor in my career choice. Health care management met my two requirements and at that point I knew this was the career for me. I firmly believe that any career I pursue should be one that I’m passionate about. One of my passions is helping others. Health care managers help patients just as much as doctors, nurses and other clinical professionals. For me it’s very imperative that I find a career were I would have impact the lives of others. This would ensure that I’m fulfilling one of my purposes in life. I 'm ready to experience the emotional and intellectual rewards my MBA will
As stated in the “Overview,” eligible Hispanics compose a considerable percentage of California’s uninsured population, even post-ACA rollout. The remainder of this section will discuss the specific barriers to health care shared by ineligible, undocumented Hispanic Californian immigrants and eligible, yet uninsured Hispanic Californians.
What differentiates me from other student is my will to make my dreams a reality. For many, obstacles often discourage and make it feel impossible to overcome - but I do not limit myself. Even when my greatest fears in life feel overwhelming, never have I allowed it to overcome me. Instead, I work every day to transform each obstacle into a beneficial experience. Approaching my senior year, I had to decide between continuing band or beginning an internship at a doctor’s office. I could not have a daytime band class, but I kept music close to my heart by participating in my fourth and final season of marching band. At the same time, the opportunity for me to work in a medical environment at my age is rare and I intended to take it. The Health
“I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. This was only the second time in my adult life I have ever called 911 for a medical emergency.” (Daniels, 2014)
