Even though people did not expect it. The December twenty sixth two thousand four tsunami in the Indian Ocean claimed nearly all of its 200,000 victims on shores that had gone 200 years without a tsunami, and had not had an earthquake larger than a magnitude 7.9.
Population
The 2004 tsunami, coated Indonesia with a sheet of sand measured at 8 centimeters thick.
Infrastructure
The earthquake destroyed the entire Indonesian coastline.
Mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Last December marked the ten year anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. This drove researchers and surrounding governments to create tsunami warning systems. The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System was built. Two thousand of the victims were tourists. The majority of deaths were a

Hazard Vulnerability Analysis are tool which are available as a planning resource and recognizing hazards that may affect demand.
In early 1999 Osama Bin Laden recruited Afghanistans to using commercial aircraft as weapons. He developed a list of his targets here in the U.S.
In April 1999 the recruits began to obtain passports and visas for travel to the United States.
Many of the hijackers in 1999 and 2001 prepared for the 9/11 attack while living in Germany.
With cash and travelers checks acquired in the Middle East, the hijackers began arriving in the U.S. on tourist visas
The hijackers enrolled in flight schools and conducted cross-country surveillance flights.
In 2001 Several of the hijackers were apprehended by U.S. law enforcement for various traffic violations.
On September 11, 2001, the hijackers passed through security checkpoints at four U.S. airports, with knives, box cutters and concealed weapons on their body and in carry-on
At 6:00 a.m., Atta and Omari a flight from Portland to Boston. Then they checked in at American 11 which had its destination for Los Angeles. They would be passed through a series of checkpoints like the explosive-trace detector, an X-ray machine, etc. Also, some of these hijackers were selected by CAPPS (Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System) which just made these people be subject to special security measures. Over the course of about 2 hours and 14 minutes, they had been checked. Then the hijacking began to take place. Two of the hijackers stabbed flight attendants; they also tried to lure out the captain out of the cockpit, taking control of the plane. In order to prevent the passengers from intervening their plan, they would use pepper spray. The passengers were taken to the very back of the plane, meanwhile they were calling people to relay important information about the events taking place. Then they crashed the plane into the northern tower at the World Trade Center. As for United 93, the hijackers were Saeed al Ghamdi, Ahmed al Nami, Ahmad al Haznawi, and Ziad Jarrah. One of them was only selected by CAPPS (Hanawi). The flight was scheduled to leave from Newark, NJ, to San Francisco, CA. Along with the other hijackers, they also had to pass through security checkpoints. They had to pass through explosive-trace detectors, X-ray machines, and all the other machines they used. The hijackers used the same tactics as the other members but what they did differently is that, according to some phone calls, they didn’t use pepper spray or threaten to kill anyone, or killed anyone at all. Same story, passengers made phone calls to relay information, then crashed at 10:02:23 into some fields in
The morning of December 26, the peaceful morning was cut short of by a massive earthquake that struck off Indonesia causing a deadly tsunami The earthquake was described as having the power of 23,000 Hiroshima bombs, reaching a magnitude of 9.0. After the tsunami started it travels 13 countries and left beaches filled
On Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 four airplanes we hijacked in the United States. This day will be remembered for a long time, it is known as 9/11. The four planes that were hijacked, were hijacked by four small groups of terrorists. The terrorists were carrying what was described as sharp "knife like" objects that went undetected by security systems.
In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the immigration policy measures to respond to future threats of terrorism. Ever since 9/11 the immigration policy needed to be changed with the Enhance Border Security, the Homeland Security Act, and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002. These three new policies helped and made driving difficult. For example, many college students would like to study abroad but getting approval for a Visas takes time. Reports say that because the hijackers were all Muslims, a small proportion in the immediate aftermath of the attacks was focused on Muslims or those who were perceived to be Muslims, with broader use of nationality-based screening and enforcement programs.
The 2001 Terrorist attacks, orchestrated by Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (KSM), are and will forever be stamped into the min of the American people. Prior to the attack, from April through June 2001, al-Qaeda sent thirteen hijackers to the United States and supported their stay (Indictment, Section 19(a-f)). From May through September 10, 2001, the hijackers took flight classes, studied commercial fight patterns, meeting with al Qaeda official overseas in efforts to plan the terrorist attacks. The attacks were carried out on September 11th, 2001, when Mohamed Atta, Abdul Aziz al-Omari, Wail al-shehri, Waleed al-Shehri and Satam al-Suqami flew two separate planes into the two towers of the World Trade Center killing 2,976 people (Indictment Sections 20-22). After being captured, KSM along wit four others was indicted in the United States district Court of Southern New York. KSM was charged in violation of Title 18, Section 2332b(a) of the United States Code. Title 18, Section 2332b(a) prohibits “conduct transcending national boundaries and in a circumstance described in subsection (b). Section b states, “creates a substantial risk of serious bodily injury to any other person by destroying or damaging any structure, conveyance, or other real or personal property within the United States or by attempting or conspiring to destroy or damage any structure, conveyance, or other
A tsunami is one of the catastrophic event that is known to cause great impact in the region they have
Tsunamis occur when there is sudden movement in an extensive body of water such as earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, major volcanic eruptions or meteorite impacts. The most common source of a tsunami is earthquakes, which are another type of geomorphic hazard that is caused by the friction and stress that tectonic plates put on each other. Tsunamis primarily occur in coastal or island regions where there is a tectonic border or what is known as the ring of fire. As shown in the diagram below the ring of fire is located along the coastal and island regions of the world. As a result of the Pacific Plate diving beneath the Eurasian plate, on March 11, 2011, there were 2 geomorphic hazards, a magnitude-9 earthquake struck north Japan, which caused a deadly tsunami that reached heights of 39 meters. The destructive dilemma was dubbed ‘The Great Sendai Disaster’. The earthquake was caused by multiple centuries of stress on the tectonic plates surrounding the island. The earthquake caused a tsunami that reached the height of 39 meters (128 feet). Japanese scientists had previously discovered that there was another tsunami just like the one in 2011 that took place in 869 AD. But their warning was unhindered. The tsunami, which occurred in 869 AD, was caused by the same tectonic fault as the 2011 tsunami. The epicenter of the earthquake was off the northeast cost of Japan leading to a devastating tsunami that killed many and left many wishing they were. The massive earthquake caused an upward wave that headed towards the city of Sendai. Researches have recently uncovered a thin layer of clay that lubricated the fault zone causing the deadly tectonic slip, thus creating a tsunami that could wipe out an entire city as it did in 2011.The aftermath of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake was not pretty; it caused many deaths, injuries, traumas, financial difficulties, destruction of property, health bills and the destruction of the landscape as a whole. The natural disaster caused nearly 16,000 casualties and there are an estimated 2,500 people still reported missing. Although drowning caused most deaths others include, crushed by debris, suicide and diseases caused by nuclear radiation (cancer) spilled from nuclear
Fourteen years has passed since that fateful attack on the United States where multiple terrorist commandeered commercial aircrafts and crashed them into the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon. Mohammed Atta and his accomplices hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, crashing the aircraft into the North Tower whilst a few minutes later, their associate, Marwan al Shehhi and other accomplices crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower. Both of these individuals obtained and received their pilot’s licenses at Huffman Aviation in Florida by training on large jet flight simulators. A fellow terrorist, Ziad Jarrah, who crashed United Airlines Flight 93 before his intended target, believed to be The White House, also acquired his pilot training at Florida. However, Hani Hanjour, the terrorist who commandeered American Airlines Flight 77 and crashed into the Pentagon, obtained his licenses at Arizona
The Indian Ocean tsunami caused waves as high as 9 metres in some places and in other places witnesses described a rapid surging of the ocean. Flooding can extend inland by 300 metres or more. The extensive energy of a tsunami can lift huge objects, flip vehicles and demolish houses. The epicentre was close to some densely populated coastal communities such as Indonesia. They had little or no warning of the tsunami. The only sign came just before the tsunami struck when the waterline suddenly retreated exposing hundreds of metres of beach and seabed. There was no Indian Ocean tsunami warning system in place. This could have saved more people in surrounding
The largest recorded tsunami occurred on July 9, 1958. It happened in the evening after an earthquake happened on the Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle. It had a record height of 1,720 feet and hit the shores of Lituya Bay, Alaska. The impact of the tsunami resulted in the uprooting of many trees. This was
On the 26th of December ( Boxing Day) a monster earthquake and tsunami formed in the Indian Ocean killing about a million people and displacing well over three million. The earthquake measured 9.2 on the seismograph which is the third largest earthquake ever recorded. If you think this is enough shortly after a tsunami formed battering countries all around the Indian Ocean with monstrous swells and strong winds. The epicentre of this disaster was in the mainland of Indonesia which also happened to be the worst every affected country followed by Sri Lanka then India. This made the earth move over a centre metre and caused aftershocks in places as far away as Alaska. This also prompted the biggest ever humanitarian response of over 14 billion dollars and also thousands of workers to help in the huge clean up process which ended up to take about five years to complete.
Early in the morning of December 26, 2004, an earthquake rocked the floor of the Indian Ocean. The 9.1-9.3 magnitude earthquake subsequently caused a series of catastrophic tsunamis to hit the coasts of Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and South Africa. The destruction was devastating, causing just under $10 billion in damage and an estimated $7 billion more in humanitarian aid. Although so much aid was sent to the affected areas, ten years later some of the areas are still suffering from the devastation. Looking back, the main cause of the devastation was the lack of warning systems in place. Although some places like Indonesia may not have had time to evacuate, many other affected areas had plenty of time but were completely uninformed, being taken by surprise. Following the tsunami the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System was created and put into place. A lot can be learned from the lack of warning and preparedness from this disaster in order to better prepare for the future (History.com, Rodgers).
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake of 9.0 magnitude shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a terrible tsunami. Its repercussions were felt around the world, from Norway's fjords to Antarctica's ice sheet. Even up till today, about 230,000 people are still living in temporary housing. This example is only one of the many kinds of disasters that happen continually in the world.
Hazard mitigation planning is an approach aimed at ascertaining ways to reduce the effects, deaths and damage to property that might result in the occurrence of a natural of man-made hazard.
The Indian Ocean Tsunami, also known as the Sumatran-Andaman Earthquake, occurred on December 26, 2004 at 7:51 AM. The epicenter of this earthquake was located off of the West Coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused immense destruction and loss of life throughout the Indian Ocean basin within several hours of its occurrence. The Indian Ocean Tsunami was the highest magnitude event in the region in over forty years. About 230,000 people were reported dead with many more still missing, which is the fourth largest reported death toll for any natural disaster in history.
