White-collar crimes are just as prevalent today as ordinary street crimes. Studies show that criminal acts committed by white-collar criminals continue to increase due to unforeseen opportunities presented in the corporate world, but these crimes are often overlooked or minimally publicized in reference to criminal acts on the street. Many street crimes are viewed as unnecessary, horrendous crimes because they are committed by lower class citizens, whereas white collar crimes are illegal acts committed by seemingly respectable people whose occupational roles are considered successful and often admired by many (Piquero, 2014). These views often allow white collar crimes to “slip through the cracks” and carry lesser charges or punishment.

In the world we live in today, racism and police brutality are raising concerns that society needs to be aware of. Beginning from the mid 1900s and on, racism was an ongoing problem that many individuals acted on from day to day. Whether it was mainly whites who hated blacks or vice versa, there never seemed as if a solution would ever come about. In our society there is many different types of crimes, I will be focusing specifically on street crime and white-collared crime. Each of these criminal communities has criminals that in the end are just trying to reach a goal. Whether it is the American dream of living in luxury or just trying to make ends meet. “White collared” crime is defined as a nonviolent criminal act that is motivated by financial gain. Then there is “street crime” which is defined as a criminal offense that is committed in a public place. Some examples of white-collar crimes are: embezzlement, corporate price-fixing, fraud, bribery, forgery, money laundering, cybercrime, copyright infringement, etc. While some examples of street crime are: robbing, murder, rape, sale of illegal drugs, assault, auto theft, etc.

My first reaction after watching the video Fault Lines- Baltimore- Anatomy of an American City was that city Baltimore is obviously a dangerous city and there is crime everyday. While anyone can commit a crime, in this particular video it was mainly blacks that were spoke about, I feel that they themselves sold drugs and killed people with guns because that’s the only way of life they knew and were not brave enough to change it for the better. The dealing of drugs was apparently big at one time and more arrest’s meant more money to the state, in order to stop violence and crime with guns, this meant trying to arrest each and every person they thought look suspicious. It seems to be that the black people feel it’s a “war on blacks” and think they are the only ones that we are after but it’s very untrue, it was said by the black man incarcerated that basically if you are of black color then you are going to jail. If people would be more open minded and stopped dragging out slavery from years ago, they would realize that we are not automatically arresting every black person that walks the street, it’s a pattern in Baltimore and it’s up to the ones that live there to change the pattern, prove us wrong and show us that it’s not a war on blacks but a war on drugs.

People sometimes commit them unaware of the consequences due to the lack of understanding what a hate crime really is. A hate crime is a motive to hurt or insult a certain group of people. It is more harsh and dangerous than most crimes because it not only affects the victim, but the whole group of that victim’s characteristic. While this is true, this kind of prevalence has not been at the forefront of the political, personal, social, etc. sphere in a long while. Headlines are becoming more trigger inducing and there has been an uproar of hate crimes across the nation. While both sides have contributed to the hatefulness, the way that the hate is manifested is more rampant among supporters of Trump. This is seen through the way that the hate crime rate has gone up since November 8th. In more ways than one Trump’s election into office has given these people that have hate in them a pass, of sorts, to act on that hate and victimize others.
