Wolves howling, bears hunting, mosquitoes biting, heart… … beating. This what Brain from Hatchet by Gary Paulsen had to go through every day. After crashing a plane into to a lake,13 year old Brain had to survive for 54 days!!!After reading this book I saw lots a times he got caught up in the past. This help and/or hurt him in many ways. In Hatchet, Brian had to keep a positive mind this was hard without someone motivating lucky he had his memories to guide him.One of the memories was important quote from his teacher Mr.Peirch said”Perpich had put it—stay positive and stay on top of things” (In chapter 5 of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen).Brain had this memory alone to motivate him. This was important because it shows how good it’s to have these memories
The protagonist of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy from New York. The setting of this book is the northern Canadian wilderness. At the beginning of the book, Brian is going on a plane from New York to Canada to visit his father after he and Brian’s mother got divorced. The divorce and “The Secret” that Brian’s mother is having an affair plagues Brian for the majority of the book. As the pilot of the plane is flying them over the Canadian wilderness, the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes into a large lake. Brian survives, but the plane has sunk in the lake. Brian is injured and has no food. He eventually finds a bunch of strange berries and eats them, but they end up making him sick. He then finds a large amount of raspberries and spots a bear while he is there. He makes a shelter, but in the middle of the night, a porcupine wanders into his shelter and Brian throws his hatchet at it. It shoots quills into his leg and runs off.
“I'm hungry and i'd trade everything I have for a hamburger.”(47) Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is an exciting story about a character named Brian Robeson who is left in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a hatchet and must survive until help comes. Hatchet supports my belief that hard work helps overcome obstacles.
At the beginning of the story, Brian could be described as worried Gary Paulsen writes, ‘’Going to die Brian thought going to die’’ on page 26. This quote shows he was so worried that he thought he
Brain realizes that he can make fire using his hatchet. This aha moment was a critical part in Brain’s survival. Having a fire in the wilderness is a big part in survival. The night before he realized this, he heard something and couldn’t see it because it was so dark, and he ended up getting injured because of it. If Brian would have had the fire, he would have been able to see what it was, and would have not gotten injured.
Have you ever been in situation where your life was entirely based on your own actions, been stuck in life or death situation with little sanctuary? These questions revolve around the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Thirteen year old Brian is the sole survivor of a devastating plane crash in the middle of the canadian wilderness after the pilot had a heart attack. For a harsh 54 days, Brian pulls an amazing feat by living by himself with only his wits and very little knowledge on how to survive. Overall, one of the main reasons Brian lived through his trials and tribulations is by realizing the world around him and adjusting to suit the violent wilderness. Brian had several Aha moments throughout, all of them helping him realize that mistakes weren’t a affordable and helping him develop and adapt to the world around him.
First and foremost, the story “Hatchet” has a significant turning point. Brian was flying in a plane to meet his father in the oil fields of Northern Canada when the pilot had a heart attack. Because the pilot had a heart attack, Brian was forced to crash land the plane. Then Brian landed in the wilderness and has to survive with a 2 dimes, a quarter, 2 pennies, a nickel, a hatchet his mother gave him, and himself. Brian will have to make serious choices in order to survive this frantic turning point in “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. At first Brian thinks that he can't do anything and that he is weak, but later on in the story he figures out that he is his most important asset and that encourages him to survive this tragic event.
During a person’s teenage years, one is most vulnerable to trauma that occurs around them. In the book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Marjane lives through a revolution in her own country. The story speaks to her loss of innocence during the revolution and how she goes through her life. In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie is going through the Holocaust with his father and he witnesses many major and scarring events. In A Long Way Gone: Memoir of A Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah, the story is about Ishmael and his life as a boy soldier in Sierra Leone. These individuals all lose their innocence at a very young age but it shapes them to be better people later on in their lives.
Brian has so many things to be proud of and he always follows his family motto about “never giving up”. That is a motto everyone in life should have, you will face obstacles in life, but why let them defeat you, push and fight against them just like Brian
This is an essay demonstrates a strong agreement that the burnt stick is a novel about inequality. Since from the eighteenth to the twentieth there were a lot of clues in this novel shows inequality between white and aboriginal. The white carry out the stolen generation, took the light skinned aboriginal kids away from their original family to lear white people’s culture, also they think they don’t have emotion and the fathers didn’t allow the kids like John Jagamarra doing the aboriginal people’s thing. By analysing these three points, this essay will contend that the inequality shows in this novel.
In “The Diary of a Young Girl” the author states, “But as you can see, Kitty, I'm still alive, and that's the main thing” (Frank). Since Anne had a positive attitude about the situation she was in, it helped her realize that she should be thankful for the little things. It also helped her to forget about the hardships and celebrate the jubilant times. In “Dear Miss Breed” the author states as she was on her way to a Japanese internment camp, “One of the most beautiful scenery was when crossing a bridge which was right above the Colorado River” (Oppenheim). Louise Ogawa had a cheerful attitude and she gained positive experiences during her trip. As she was looking at the river, it helped her forget for a while about the things she is about to face. In the article “How Your Attitude Affects Your Reality” Honoree Corder states, “When something less-than-fantastic happens, you can respond or react. Choose to respond in whatever way is appropriate and then press the reset button on your attitude” (Corder). During a hard time, having a change in attitude is key, and very important. Having a negative attitude, however, will not help relieve the pain that is being felt. A hopeful and sanguine outlook on a situation will help to not focus on the unfortunate things in
Imagine sitting on an airplane, then all of a sudden you wake up and find yourself stranded on an uncharted island. Your palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms heavy. When all the adults have died and you are the only person alive with a group of boys on the break of adolescence… Without an adult how will one survive? In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies there are many characters that are perceived as savages. When an airplane crashes on an undiscovered island, the only survivors are young boys. Throughout the novel, the boys fight for their survival, but many fear that there is a beast who may be lurking on the island. As the boys were once moral, their innocence slowly disintegrates away and they turn into their true form, a bloodthirsty savage. Perhaps the beast is within themselves.
The key character traits that are exposed include perseverance, determination and also creativity. Brian show’s perseverance when things are not easy or don’t go his way. The text supports this is the many times it seemed nature itself was trying to make Brian’s life harder or to even kill him. An example of this is when a bear shows up in his camp in the dark of night and begins eating his food. The beer ends up throwing him twenty feet in the direction of the lake causing many injuries. Brian is very hurt and it isn’t easy for despite everything he keeps on going after the bear encounter. Brian shows determination many times throughout the story. When something seems impossible he keeps on going and pushes through. An example is when he begins trying to make a stronger bow. He repeatedly fails but does not give in. Creativity, if Brian did not possess this trait he couldn't have survived more than a week. He used creativity when doing so many things. These things included the area of the lake that he made a wall that traps in fish for him to spear and get an easy meal. He also uses creativity when designing his shelter door to keep animals out. After having various unwelcome guests, he decided to do something about it. All in all Brian uses the three traits Perseverance, determination and creativity many times to last in the
It is not mentally not looking at circumstances with eyes that see only what you want to see”. In other words using Positive Self-Talk shows us the truth on real situations. For example: you were trying out for the school volleyball team and you messed up on bumping the ball, when the negative thoughts occur that is when the positive self talk will take place “ok I’m now going to focus on what I need to complete in order to make it on the team.” There is a way in which you can develop a positive self talk habit, there are 3 steps and the first one is “Mantra”, choose a mantra and find a positive self talk for example; “I feel strong”. This positive self talk will encourage you to feel motivated. The second step is “Practice Multiple Scenarios”after using the positive self talk from step one, repeat the line so you can practice having it sink in your brain. It will help you during real situations in sports a example for this step is “Anything can happen, and I’m definitely not out of this, Don’t let up”. Finally, the last step called “Creating A Positive Mental Image Or Visualization” this technique can help you create a visual picture on what you are doing and saying This powerful combination will create a positive message.
As muscles tightened and head throbbed, all that was on my mind was the fear I would never be able to get up again. Very thankful for the time with friends, it never crossed my mind something like this could happen. My heart was racing like it wasn’t going to stop, and then it hit me like a brick wall. There I was lying on the hard earth staring at the blurred trees stuttering around me like a slow motion video. Driving up to trollhaugen on this frostbitten arctic February day felt like a century as all the kids had been looking forward to this day forever. Laughing and playing games was our way to pass time as well as occasionally glancing out into the bleak fields of grass. Pulling into Trollhaugen’s parking lot lit up our faces like children
I think that a positive attitude is most important because it can get you through anything if you believe that you can. After Mr. Gardner thought he was through all of the “tough” times and he had sold his last bone density scanner, the government had taken all but twenty-one dollars of his money. Although at times he was angry he thought of the future, what he can accomplish, and
