I have been so tempted to write this but each time I sit down to do it I chicken out. I truly don't mean to offend or upset anybody but hey...if the shoe fits, wear it. Growing up in a town with less than twenty thousand people has taught me more than any education I've ever received has. I'm sure people from other towns will read this and still be able to relate. What is it about Hartselle, though? Don't get me wrong, this isn't going to a random blog bashing all things Hartselle and the people in the town. I just don't understand how things play out so differently in our little town versus the towns that surround us. Why do we have people standing outside the Legion Post and Civic Center on wet/dry voting day with a "Keep Hartselle a Small
Migrating from one place to another is never easy, especially when the overall experience and change is so drastic. Looking out the window and having everything change can be scary. For example, when I was just a lad, about eleven years old, I moved from the great big city of Athens, Georgia, to the little, big village called Perrinton, Michigan. Although it was very scary at first and I did not like the big change; I did not like the location, or the smell, or the fact that everyone called soda “pop”, or the fact that I had to beg my parents to drive so long in order to get anywhere. I eventually came to love being in the quietness and contentment the countryside gave me. From the research I have come across, it is quite apparent to me, that Perrinton has had many fans since day one. Welcoming people from all over, year after year with its festivals, a school, and little businesses. Many businesses started up and plenty of businesses burned down. Like many other small villages, Perrinton developed during time, and with time many things happened. Perrinton has seen many changes over the years to make it the village it is today.
Growing up in the small town of Pocahontas, Iowa gives appreciation to the simplicity of tight-knit communities. With a population of 1,800 people, there is single café where local farmers enjoy a morning cup of coffee while discussing the news. Rural communities are a place where children have birthday parties at the local pizza place and teenagers’ first jobs are as detasslers. As a child, your mother knows if you got in trouble at school before you return home and everyone’s name is well known throughout the area.
Clarisse was forgotten, she wasn’t remembered. She was gone. Simply gone. Due to the rumor Mildred spread around town, many believed Clarisse had unfortunately died in a car accident. Others created their own fictional story of Clarisse’s mysterious disappearance. Those who ignored her had no idea that she was gone, or that she even existed in the first place. However, few knew the real story behind Clarisse and what really happened after her so called “car accident”.

In the short story, “Desiree’s Baby,” Kate Chopin exposes the harsh realities of racial divide, male dominance, and slavery in Antebellum Louisiana. Although written in 1894, Chopin revisits the deep-south during a period of white privilege and slavery. Told through third-person narration, the reader is introduced to characters whose individual morals and values become the key elements leading to the ironic downfall of this antebellum romance. As Chopin takes the reader through the unfortunate circumstances and unexpected twists of Desiree’s life, a Southern Gothic tale emerges. While Armonde is Chopin’s obvious villain, one should not assume that the other characters are not antagonists themselves, as
Citlali Giselle, of Blackfoot, was born on February 9th 2001; she passed away at 16 years old on June 12th 2017. Her childhood was dance from the minute she began to walk. She danced for most of her life. Lali was put into many baby and toddler beauty pageants around the area; she even competed in Utah, Washington, California and Georgia. I’ve lived in Dover, New Jersey for my entire life. Although I love it here, Dover seems to have a bad reputation with the well-to-do cookie cutter towns in Morris County. People looking in on us from the outside see a dirty, ghetto place where fights occur daily and drug deals happen in the classrooms. This awful stereotype breaks my heart because as someone who has grown up here, I know that the people in Dover are the most passionate, hard working, and proud people around and they have shaped me to be who I am today.
Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is set in Maycomb, a fictional town in Alabama, in the 1930’s. Through its strong themes of racism and discrimination, the novel could portray a depressing view on life, but it’s outcome is the opposite. The novel shows great optimism and hope for the future through many reason, but largely centering with the perspective of the novel through a young child, Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch. Through her juvenility, she shows pure honesty and shows optimism through Jem and herself, their father Atticus and the well-known conviction of Tom Robinson.
The town that I grew up in is Cedaredge Colorado. It is a quiet little town nothing ever happens there. It is a rural community. There are lot’s of farmers and many older retired people who live in Cedaredge Colorado. My neighborhood has many people who live in it. Some of our neighbors are nice and so are total pains in the rear. We put on rodeo bible camps right at my house so there is around 400 different people at my house during the course of the 8 days. My neighbors are very lenient on the deal because of the fact that I know that they get bothered by it with all the noise and the rodeo’s that go on every day. All together though our town is a fun town to grow up in. Our high school football team won state in 2012 and the band has won
I agree with Ms. Shanteau, abuse is abuse no matter what form it rears its ugly head. She expressed her inner feelings from the depth of her soul. The emotional tortures she endured by Flint and his wife most likely would still have been repugnant to her as if she was beaten with a whip or tied to a tree. I could never conceive the daily anguish she must have endured trying to outsmart a rapist and to be made to feel and believe she was less than human. No flint allowed her to slide or not beat her for his own self-interested. Perhaps, she would have made less money or be of no value if disfigured; he had no humanity. A Slave owner and the word humanity together are an oxymoron.
Growing up in rural North Carolina was both a blessing and a curse. My hometown, Fallston, North Carolina, is a tiny town way off the beaten path. Most people speak with a southern accent, are devout christians, vote Republican, think camouflage is a normal fashion pattern, and adore country music. But while I was a child, none of these things were a problem. I never realized how close-minded everyone was or how there were no opportunities for success; I was too concerned with the three most important events of the year: the Fallston FunFest, the Belwood Tractor Pull, and the Cleveland County Fair. However, as I grew older, zeal wore off and reality set in. I started to realize how conservative and restrictive it was. What little Fallston offered,
“I am Briseis De Blanc, beta to the Red Eyed Pack of Lousiana descended from one of the oldest packs known to wolf. At one time we had run with both Lupen and Loule and called them friends,” she stepped closer to Alwyn so that their torsos touched. “But that is not a story for now. I was told stories as a child of great fighting between all packs. Many were wiped out and others struggled to survive. My pack survived by calling to Loule and asking him for aide,” Briseis leaned in and sniffed the crook of Alwyn’s neck and released a deep growl. “We did so again when Hale butchered us and ours for living with humans in our pack. Lupen would not answer our calls, so my father called to Loule … and … he answered. That day guardians, warriors, trackers,
Exploring Poetic Devices in “Track 5: Summertime” by Jericho Brown “Track 5: Summertime” from Jericho Brown ’s Please, recipient of the American Book Award, was written for and performed by Janis Joplin, a blues singer known for extreme emotionalism, her untamable voice, and portrayals of hardships tied to her personal experiences (Brackett 1). The title, “Summertime,” references the popular jazz standard that originated from Porgy and Bess, a folk opera by George Gershwin, a significant American composer of the 20th century. Notably, in the Porgy and Bess, “Summertime” is used as a “reminiscence theme” that ironically juxtaposes the dramatism that surrounds it, as the gentle lyrics of the lullaby appear during times of hardship, interweaving
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, a dark tale of sin and redemption, centers around the small Puritan community of Boston during the 17th century. In the midst of this small community is Hester Prynne. She is a woman that has defied the Puritans, taken the consequences and in the end conformed with the Puritans. It did,
I found the emotions displayed in this week’s reading to be very diverse and contrasting. On one hand we had the Iliad, which displayed a lot of feeling of anger and contempt. Heavy use of exclamatory sentences in addition to descriptions of physical emotions depicted a sense of acrimony and annoyance throughout the scenes. In addition, I found the topic of love to be at the forefront of displaying these various emotions. In the Encomium of Helen love is seen as something with great power whether positive or negative. Lastly in the Iliad love is depicted through the strong love present family relations. I found it very interesting how the desires and elements of love in the pieces had an effect on depicting emotion throughout the different
