Harry Potter and Odysseus There are many acts of heroism as well as leadership. Harry Potter and Odysseus, two similar figures as heroes, yet so different. Harry is selfless and caring; on the other hand, Odysseus is arrogant and prideful. Many people would disagree with these choices; however they show so many similar features that they can almost be each other. They both relentlessly face quests; they both possess courage, intelligence, and ignorance. In Harry Potter (any book of the series is fine), Harry and his two friends, Ron and Hermione go on a search for Horcruxes, objects that can destroy Lord Voldemort, an evil sorcerer that killed Harry’s parents when he was a child. Throughout the series, he finds out more and more about himself
Is Odysseus, the main character of Homer’s The Odyssey, really an epic hero? An epic hero embodies several heroic traits such as; having superior or super-human strength; being intellectual and courageous; and being a strong and responsible leader. An epic hero struggles and is overwhelmed with difficulties. An epic hero is on a quest of self discovery, war or some sort of goal. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is on a quest to return home to Ithaca after ten years of war in Troy. Odysseus, during his quest, is forced to venture through a merciless Cyclops, angered Gods, deeply obstinate Goddesses, the underworld, and determined suitors that are after his wife Penelope. Odysseus surmounts
The Odyssey and O’Brother Where Art Thou? both tell the same story through different time frames and different areas of the world. Both main characters are portrayed as heroes, and they both have many of the traits form a “Heroes Journey” notes. Although both are heroes Ulysses is a better hero than Odysseus. Some example of why are he is a better leader, he goes back to get his campaigns, he doesn’t look back on his decisions or show if he is unsure about a decision.
For the last eight or nine years we have been hearing about a disorder that is new. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Odysseus developed (PTSD) after coming back home, he developed (PTSD) by remembering and witnessing he’s comrades die.
There are many legendary epic stories have been passed on from generation to generation in the Greek culture. Even though each story has different outcomes, every epic character has certain features in common. Odysseus in The Odyssesy and Oedipus in Oedipus the King are great examples of epic heroes with a variety of similarities. Odysseus and Oedipus are similar in which they both god-like men who are considered heroes because of their cautious ways and relentless tenacity. On the other hand, Odysseus and Oedipus also demonstrate their crude habits with their hubris behavior throughout their own prophecy. In addition to the similarities, the powerful gods play a significant role which drastically affects
In homer's Odyssey the main character Odysseus is a person who only tries to help himself. Although he earns the trust of his men while in Troy, he loses it on his perilous journey home. Many times in the epic he manipulates others, commits foolish acts and is full of hubris. He tries to take shortcuts and as a result of this is men are killed and his boats destroyed. He plays with the lives of his men and he is punished for it. Odysseus is not a hero because, he is foolish, lacks faithfulness and is consumed by his Hubris and selfishness.
As they were leaving the Island Of Cyclops.Oysseus had told his men to close the ports. His men asked “Why do we need to?, the weather looked fine”. Odysseus had replied by the looks of the sky it looks like a storm was soon to appear. They were sailing through the ocean, the water became hard to maneuver. The men yelled we need to stop and Odysseus agreed. As they were resting on the boat for the water to
One of the major themes of Homer’s Odyssey is the importance of cunning over strength. This also happens to be the case with Odysseus and his long ten year journey home from fighting in Troy. Odysseus uses his intelligence over strength to ‘fight’ through tough times and bring himself home to Ithaca. Odysseus uses his intelligence when he has his men tie him down while passing the Sirens, so he himself will be able to hear their beautiful song, but not be entranced by their singing. He also uses cunning to escape from the Cyclops’ cave without being harmed. He then uses his cunning by storing away all of the armory, shields, and knives from the suitors so he is able to kill them easily.
Another quality of Odysseus that made him a hero was his quick thinking in various situations and his ability to lie. Throughout his journey he encountered multiple beasts and creatures who all attempt to stop him from returning home. When he reaches the cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus uses his way with words to prevent the neighboring cyclops from thinking that he is a threat to Polyphemus. Odysseus tells Polyphemus his name is “Nobody”, so when the neighboring cyclops asks who Is harming him, Polyphemus responds with “Nobody.” Although his constant disguising was shamed in comparison to Achilles, this clever thinking made the ancient Greeks recognize him as a hero because they knew he was intelligent. Another example of his quick thinking was when he encountered the lair of the sirens. He knew how he would be
The definition of a hero is unique for every individual; however there are several regulations that majority of individuals can agree on. A hero must exhibit traits such as humility, kindness, and courage. Once the candidate expresses hubris, displays cruelty, or retreats from a formidable challenge, he cannot be considered a hero. Lastly, a hero candidate must overcome challenges that defy the odds. He must deliver a gift to society that benefits society as a whole; such gifts can be freedom, liberty, or hope. Odysseus in The Odyssey, by Homer, fulfilled these requirements and rightfully earned the title of a hero. Odysseus is well deserving of the title hero because he has put the needs of others before his own, shown signs of
Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus earns the title of a true hero by conveying many qualities such as: determination, courage and leadership.
A great leader requires many qualities such as selflessness and decision-making skills, however not all leaders meet the criteria. A great example of a leader is Nelson Mandela due to his ability to influence others as well as his will to make a difference. Odysseus is his foil character in this respect as he lacked sophrosyne on multiple occasions and made poor decisions due to his hubris. Although both leaders learned from their past experiences, Odysseus was unable to become the great leader Nelson Mandela was due to his lack of ability to listen as well as his inability to pause and make the right decision. Even though Nelson Mandela and Odysseus are very different, they still both learn from their experiences in order to better themselves.
In Epic Poem “The Odyssey” Odysseus is the protagonist. Odysseus’ over-the-top ego caused him to lose his men and his son’s childhood, but taught him a valuable lesson about humility. The Odyssey, written by Homer, tells the story of Odysseus and how he faced misfortune in his attempts to return home after the Trojan War. Odysseus is not famous for his great strength or bravery, but for his ability to deceive and trick. To his friends, he was a brilliant strategist. To his enemies, he was a deceiver and a manipulator of the worst kind.
The Greek heroes Achilles and Odysseus both embody strong characteristics classically found in Greek mythology, but this doesn’t mean they don’t possess flaws like mortal men. While Achilles and Odysseus are different in lineage, one being a demigod and the other a mortal, they still share similar attributes. Both of the heroes are prideful and selfish in nature and allow their arrogance to stunt their growth as individuals believing they are above showing humility for their actions. Another similarity they share that I find admirable is the endless amount of courage and sheer determination they possess as they fearlessly face danger head-on. In contrast, both heroes differ greatly in their strengths; in battle Achilles uses his physical strength to his advantage while Odysseus relies on his intelligence and wit, often outsmarting his opponents. Another significant difference between the two men is their differing view towards the Trojan War. Achilles is driven by his anger and hatred of Paris and impulsively reacts in a self-destructive manner, whereas Odysseus is the complete opposite of Achilles, as he takes control of the situation using logic and rational thinking to solve his problems.
Lizeth Marin Honors Introduction to Literature Period 3 18 April 2008 Odysseus: Hero or Villain? Heading home, to Ithaca, Odysseus is faced upon many obstacles that he and his men try to overcome, but in the end substantiate that Odysseus is a villain. “The old soldier in despair: He has spent ten years (seven of them as Calypso’s not entirely unwillingly captive) trying to get home” (652, summary). Evidence proves that Odysseus is a villain, because he tries to convince that he was kept unwillingly by Calypso. However, it is true that Odysseus was kept as Calypso’s captive for a time. Yet he can still be judged as a villain, because he does not just stay as a prisoner, no, he assists Calypso by being with her for the pleasures that
Odysseus is a courageous leader because he saves his crew in combat many times. One way Odysseus shows he is a courageous leader is by proving his worth in combat. Odysseus is obviously a good fighter because he survived the Trojan War, if he had not have been a
