A great leader’s determination to fulfil his mission comes from one’s passion to do so not his position. The book Haroun and the sea of stories by Salman Rushdie, shows qualities of what makes a good leader. Characters in this novel help readers to understand how good leaders show courage and must refuse to be ignorant and selfish.
Throughout the novel, courage is significantly seen as a strong quality in good leaders.. Similarly, the Guppies needed someone to go to the dark zone to save the Ocean of Stories. It was at this moment that Haroun announced ¨I’ll go”(Rushdie 136). This shows great leadership because when everyone else was too afraid to go into the dark zone Haroun found the courage to volunteer and go. Haroun did not like the idea of the ocean dying because he has only started believing in the ocean and everything else then he states to the General that “It turns out that I don't like the idea of that, sir, not one bit”(Rushdie 137). This illustrates courage because Haroun explains why he wants to save the Ocean of Stories before it dies due to the poison. Khattam-Shud loses a battle because of his ignorance to the advantages of freedom of speech. During the fight between guppies and chupwalas, Rashid analyses that “Their vows of silence and their habits of secrecy had made them suspicious and distrustful of one another and in battle became disunited”(Rushdie 185). Khattam-Shud says “The world is for controlling.. Your world, my world, all worlds. They are all to be ruled”(Rushdie 161). This demonstrates how a leader is ignorant and selfish. Khattam-Shud tries to empower himself by trying to control all worlds and lets his army lose because they weren’t able to talk so that they are able to trust each
