Roger Ebert, a TV personality, intelectual, renowned film critic, writer, and “essential man,” had his life impacted greatly by terminal illness and devastating surgical procedures which rendered him mute, immobile and nearly vegetative. Remarkably, through perseverance and the help of his wife Chaz, Roger was able to continue to lead a semi-meaningful life while proceeding with his passion for film critique, and spending quality time with his family.
In Chris Jones’s biography “Roger Ebert: The Essential Man” (2010), Jones narrates that Ebert’s life has changed dramatically due to medical conditions. Jones gives details in chronological order from when Ebert discovered his cancer to when he was finally cured. Jones’s purpose for writing this article is to describe a famous critics life in order to show the effects of his cancer on his life. The intended audience would be anyone interested in the effects of cancer or Roger’s personal experience with cancer.

Most people do not consider the value of life until a tragedy occurs such as the terminal illness or death. Four sources “Hamlet’s Soliloquy”, “ 9/11 Victims Compensation, Fund Video,” o“Roger Ebert: The Essential Man,” and “Human Life Value Calculator” website. Hamlet/ Feinberg focuses on valuing life through emotional suffering. Ebert/ Calculator focuses on valuing life through experiences. I want others to remember me by my experienced in life and my engagement in the community.
The value of life has been told in many perspective, for example in Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, it’s been quoted “to be or not to be” which translate to the option of living or dieing. But in the article “The Essential Man” by Chris Jones has a hefty contrast compared from the perspective of Hamlet’s view of life. In the article Jones writes about the journey of Roger Ebert battling cancer, which sadly caused the removal of his lower jaw. However it did not stop Ebert from living his personal and professional life. Ebert’s point of view of life is agreeable because life has its obstacles, but it does not mean we need to give up on ourselves and our life.
Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are different themes displayed throughout this play like death, revenge, and suicidal. Through hundreds of years have passed since Shakespeare wrote hamlet the various themes of the play still relate to modern-day society. Mortality can have a big effect on family relationships and individuals in today society just like it did on hamlet. Individuals are passing on today by various means. There are present motion pictures and network programs that are based off Shakespeare play Hamlet like lion king, ten things I hate about you and deliver us from Eva. hamlet and lion king are very similar in a way. For instance, Hamlet is the story of Prince Hamlet and The Lion King is the story of Prince Simba. Both tales explore the loss of a father by their uncle of wanting to become king. However, the People still die to this day by different means. Death is one of the leading themes in Hamlet and many of the main characters, including the title character himself, die in the play. One primary part in the topic of death in this play is suicide, and individuals' perspectives regarding the matter. In the play, it was accepted by numerous that Polonius‟ just little girl Ophelia had taken her own life when she suffocated in a waterway, after her reality was torn separated because of her dad's murder. The undertakers in Act 5, Scene 1 cruelly assert that: "If this had not been a refined woman, she ought to have been covered out o' Christian internment."
It is often heard: Nobody is Perfect. This phrase is often used as a rationalization of foolish human mistakes that could have been prevented. However, this statement has a much more profound significance. It contains an important lesson that guides or rather should guide people through life. By admitting that nobody is perfect, the individual demonstrates a deeper understanding of the human nature and inner self. This knowledge is essential to the individual's creation of healthy relationships with one's surrounding. For as Robert A. Johnson asserts in his book, He, "perfection or a good score is not required; but consciousness is"(76). In William Shakespeare's
Hamlet CRT Throughout life, one is often met with moments where grief is an overpowering force that deeply impacts one's ability to operate. One thing many people have developed to continue and progress along the trail of life is referred to as emotional courage, the ability to experience something sad or fearful and continue to go about life despite one's feelings. Courage is a vital factor in how the world operates and how tasks are completed, regardless of the circumstances that affect the task at hand. When losing a loved one, the grief that enters someone's life is unmatched, but one must keep going about their life to complete the tasks at hand. One's ability to surmount after being separated from someone affects people in a variety of ways.

Because of Hamlet preoccupation with death,it seems the Shakespeare is arguing that Hamlet seeś death as a cure for life because when he thinks about killing himself but he hesitates about it,also love is one of the reasons Hamlet wants to kill himself because his father that he loved died and he found out that his uncle killed his father and his mother Gertrude married Claudius and this connects with our lives because if someone we loved died or if they betrayed you or did something you never imagine they would do you would get depressed and that will hurt you really deep inside. Here are some quotes that support my thesis,¨To sleep :perchance to dream:ay,there's the rub for in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shifted off
The true meaning of life is unknown. There are many different ideas on what the meaning of life is. Moreover, In the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare there are multiple ways the meaning of life is portrayed in three major characters; Hamlet, Claudius, and Polonius. Hamlet’s meaning of life is shown in a belief in justice, that morphs into a craving for revenge. Claudius’ meaning of life is strictly on power. Without power, one's life is meaningless. Finally, Polonius’ meaning of life is all about reputation. Without a reputation, no one will show respect, nor will anyone want to respect anyone. Unfortunately, all of these perspectives of the meaning of life will lead to the characters in Hamlet to breathe one last breath. Although, the meaning of life differs from Hamlet, Claudius, and Polonius. Polonius has the most practical understanding of the meaning of life in today’s world. Without having a good reputation one will amount to nothing. Polonius’ death was the only death that can not be entirely based on his meaning of life because it was not his reputation that got him killed, it was his love for the King that got him killed.
Reading all of the article’s that we had read in class I had realized that everyone has a different value on life. Hamlet couldn’t care less about what happened in his life he just wanted to be gone, the victims families of 9/11 had thought that their loved ones lives were worth more than what the government had calculated, Ebert only cared about making himself and others happy, and Spiegelman had included many presentations on the values of life in his graphic novel. All of the values in life vary- from person to person. Part of your life is struggling through the bad stuff to get to the good stuff. Something to value most in life is when people cherish life no matter what’s thrown their way. Throughout all of these articles that isn’t the
Recently in my English class, we have been reading and discussing the play by William Shakespeare, Hamlet. In this play the Prince of Denmark, Hamlet, has just lost his father to death and he is overcome with depression and emits a melancholic atmosphere. In several of his soliloquies throughout the play, he expresses his desire to commit suicide and shows the audience his bleak view on life. In reference to Hamlet’s opinion of life, a discussion was sparked among my peers concerning this with questions such as, what does it mean to be alive? How to we assign value to life?
Like any number of aspiring movie critics, on some level I idolize Roger Ebert. Even before I became seriously interested in film, I knew his name. He transcended movies, becoming an icon not as a filmmaker, but a film watcher. When I began reading his reviews, something I do with every movie I watch that he reviewed, I was amazed by the brilliance of his writing. In short, one of the movies I’ve been wanting to see for two years is “Life Itself,” a biography of Ebert from one of the filmmakers whose career Ebert boosted, Steve James. I’m sorry I waited this long to see this documentary.
The man that everyone was thinking about that he is noble and giving others not even second chances that good people deserve deserve a better life and that the bad shouldn't but the opposite happens. When the king asks what's wrong with his son he asks for people to find out what's wrong with his son he asks for people around him to figure out what's wrong with the great young Hamlet. But in other parts of the story he asked a women by the name ophelia and as hamlet was trying to express how he had felt about the people around him and the people think that he is going mad. After the beginning when i was roaming around and stalking him where he goes and just look and see what people he talks too and those that don't talking to him would be inconsideration
There are many different ways to put karma into words. People say “What goes around comes around” and “You get what you give.” There are many different beliefs, some believe that you get back sevenfold, others believe that you get the equal. Whatever the case, you still want to be as good as you can. In Hamlet karma is a common factor throughout the play. Some examples are when Polonius gets killed when he is spying on what is supposed to be a private meeting between Hamlet and his mother. Laertes gets killed by his own poisoned weapon. Hamlet is also a victim to karma as well as many other characters in this play.
