Although Shakespeare's’ plays have enjoyed a wide reputation for over four hundreds of years, modern directors who try to make new productions of the plays are often baffled by the very same concern: how to help contemporary audiences understand a play that is full of archaic words, complex plots and subtle implications? Lyndsey Turner, director of London's National Theatre, gives a perfect answer to this question through her extraordinary production of Hamlet.

Lyndsey Turner is apparently a master of details. The character’s state of mind and inner emotions are conveyed through make-ups, costumes and actors/actresses’ subtle motions. When Claudius merrily announces his marriage with Gertrude, Ophelia, Laertes and Polonius smiles and claps but Hamlet, sitting at the table in mourning, rolls his eyes up and claps his hands unwillingly. The audiences can perceive the building up of tension among Hamlet, Claudius and Gertrude and the bond between Hamlet and his father from this scene. Especially in Hamlet, each death serves to drive the plot, and each time the circumstances of the death and the characters’ states of mind are different. After Hamlet stabs Polonius accidentally, he covers his face in panic and regret. He then takes his terror and rage onto Gertrude and becomes abusive towards her. When he drags Polonius’ body out of Gertrude’s room in a hurry, he knows that a bloody revenge is inevitable. Hamlet is regretful for killing Polonius, but at the same time his hostility toward Claudius and Gertrude can no longer be hidden. The death of Ophelia is presented in a more obscure way. Ophelia slowly walks into light and disappears, and then the stage darkens. From the sense of impending doom the audience can figure out Ophelia’s fate even before Gertrude confirms her death.
