In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, one of the most significant themes is dishonesty and deception are used to get people what they want. This theme is structured throughout the play by three major forms: the fear of being deceived, the act of deception, and the ultimate result of the deceptive act. Throughout the whole play, almost every character utilizes dishonesty to get them what they want, no matter the outcome. In Act I Scene V, Hamlet states: “How strange or odd some'er I bear myself (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet To put an antic disposition on).” In this quote he is informing to his peers that he will pretend to be mad because he wants to be able to investigate the accusations made by his father's ghost against Claudius, without raising any suspicion that he knows the truth about his father's death. Claudius knows something is wrong with his stepson but does not know what it is. Hamlet’s pretension of being a madman is starting to show, and people close to him are starting to realize something is out of place. Claudius, at this early point in the play, is slightly nervous of his state of mind. Although Hamlet has not yet done or said anything that distinctly proves that he knows of Claudius' act, Claudius is still suspicious. Ironically, he is worried about being deceived by Hamlet, so he sends two of his friends to spy on him to learn what is bothering him. Not only is Claudius lying to the whole state of Denmark, he is also lying to his stepson for his own well being, security, and power. Hamlet’s “antic disposition” is starting to cause further problems. His “friends” are now against him, Claudius is starting to suspect something is wrong, and he's using his power to find out what is wrong with Hamlet, all because of Claudius’ dishonesty of how he came to
