Hamlet and Macbeth Comparative Essay Shakespeare’s plays were greatly influenced by the beliefs and order during the Elizabethan era. In fact, most conflicts that occurred on his tragic plays such as Hamlet and Macbeth are based from the superstitious beliefs back then. In addition, both protagonists portrayed an ideal hero archetype. However, both Hamlet and Macbeth have major flaws which soon lead to their own downfall. For instance, both tragic plays portrayed similar aspects of the disturbance of the natural order, and the representation of the tragic heroes. To justify my argument, I will examine their similarities and differences using quotes that were derived from both plays. In fact, both Hamlet and Macbeth are plays that involves in the existence of supernatural beings in which later on causes major conflicts on the natural order throughout the play. According to Robin Phillips, during the Elizabethan era, God, angel, man, animals, and plants represents the natural order and balance in a society. It is believed that once disrupted, often times in Shakespearean plays, it is most likely to have serious consequences in the future to regain the original structure (Phillips 2014). For instance, in Hamlet the appearance of the ghost portrayed the demand of reconstruction of the natural order. “If thou hast nature in thee, bear it not. Let not the royal bed of Denmark be a couch for luxury and damned incest.” (Hamlet. I.v.81-83) the quote explains the corruption of the natural order in which Claudius interrupted to satisfy his own deeds. Moreover, in Shakespeare’s time, it is believed that the disruption of the natural structure could cause serious catastrophe in the society that could possibly tumble the balance in which God has designed. Furthermore, in Macbeth the appearance of the three witches caused major catastrophes throughout the play, in which they manipulated Macbeth to disrupt the natural order. According to this
